Sucker fishing

who knows the best methods for catching suckers in the interior south in bc through the ice ?

why would you want to fish for suckers???

i hope to win some money by catching about a 20 incher

Probably bait if you're ice fishing. That'd be my guess! Course what kind of suckers are you fishing for? Carp or squawfish. That'll depend on what kind of bait to be used. And how do you win the money? Curious this.

yes, i do plan on using bait, thanks for that tip. just not sure what kind yet - guess worms is always a safe bet. not sure what kind of suckers they r - not carp or squawfish. and i am planning on winning money by catching a fish in a fishing derby.

memar is probably refering to the derby that will take place on Feb 04 on some lake south of Kamloops. This derby is run by a service club, Rotarians I think. Apparently they netted and tagged a bunch of course fish. top prize being a Dodge Dakota 4X4. You have to get the fish with that tag to win. Check with one of the fishing shops in Kamloops for details.

ok, i guess there r no sucker experts out there,i guess ill stick to the old reliable pink leech and hope for the best

When I was younger, I would always catch suckers near the lake bottom using roe or worms where it's allowed. However, this was not the fish I was targeting. I would always fish near an inlet stream mouth - this was during ice-off.

If you want a sucker bonanza, head out to the very back of Chilliwack Lake near the drop-off. Fish in about 30-50 feet of water with roe, shrimp, or worms. These suckers seriously hit the 10 lb mark. Average 4-7 lbs. Makes for some fun fishing.

ok, thanks guys, sounds like iv been fishing too shallow for them.but worms seem to be the bait.join us on shumway lake for the rotary derby feb. 4th.

It depends on how much oxygen is in the lake. This will tell you depth. If you're not any kind of biologist then I'd suggest taking a Fishing Buddy and put it down the hole to locate fish. (I'm talking about the depthsounder of course. Well maybe not, sometimes I'd love to do that)Anyways if you don't have that I'd drill several holes starting in about 6-8 ft of water, and I'd make holes out to about 30-35 ft of water. Then start shallow and work your way out. You'll find the fish eventually! Meal worms tend to be the bait of choice from what I've heard and experienced. They tend to stay on the hook better. Also if you're in clear water you can look down the hole and watch the fish take it easier than if you were using regular worms or maggots.

thanks buckman, ill have to get some mealworms and try them.the water in this lake is not clear so its all by feel.anyway thanks for the info, hope to see u there.

well dont know if i saw u there, but there was a good turn out. i did manage to catch a sucker using worm and corn, about 18in., but not big enuf to be in the money. the winner was close to 21in.had a good time and will try again next yr. now how do i cancel this post? anybody know?
