For starters, forget about the east side of the rock.IE,Salmon point,Campbell Crick area. Port Hardy is the best bet for nice water and big Big barn doors! There is a great RV site on the highway that backs right onto the Keyoe river(wrong spelling!)So its a good bet to plan your trip in August to coincide with the humpy run this year. You will be amazed of the amount of fish stacked in Hardy bay, remember your flyrod! The only bad part is no marina at the park, but on the bright side its full of domestic rabbits you can chase around in the evening after a few cocktails!YEEHAW. On the West side there is allsorts of Marina&ccaamp grounds,my favorite place being Port Renfrew Marina and camp ground. This southern hot spot gives you access to awsome chinook fishing within a 20 min run from the dock, allso you can run to the Swiftshure bank for limits of 20 to 50lb hallys and all sorts of other bottom dwellers! Not many barn doors come in but there is allways a few HAWGS every year! There is draw backs at the camp site of course,Lack or hydro being the first, your gonna have to run the gen set.And the fresh water is limited,so its a little tough to have that hot shower after a hard days fishing! And you are on the Real West coast,it can get harry out there! |

Well, I personally fish for just about every fish around here in the salt,
except halibut, but, I can give you one or two lures I have heard. Mudraker type heavy jig with coloured hootchy attached, (you know the kind?) releases scent from the scent chambre too. Theres many variations. Secondly I have heard of anchovy working too when jigged around/off? I dont know exactly the techniques. i.e catchign halibut on salmon tackle. |

Halibut are a migratory fish that move past both sides of Vancouver Island. If you really desire to catch one, your best bet would be the Queen Charlottes. Both salmon and halibut are in larger numbers there before they divert to the inside or outside of Vancouver island. Here, on the central east coast we fish for them using herring or anchovie, trolled almost on the bottom. Jigging works as well, but you can cover more ground trolling. Look for smooth sandy bottoms with a large drop-off near by, and if you hook one, be prepared for a long fight. They aren't called barn doors for nothing.

'Au Contraire' Alexis, the best place is the Big Bank off Ucluelet. Yes Halibut are migratory but there are always fish on the BB, 365 days a year. Now as to getting out there well you better have a GPS etc., it's big water and even a small blow can make it even bigger.

I'd agree, head North if you really want some unreal hali fishing. Personally
I've fished off the mouth of the Skeena, and a flat in between Prince
Rupert and the Charlottes. You do need a bigger boat for sure. 5 of us limited
out in less than 30 min. Makes for exciting fishing, no barn doors though.
The biggest was 65 lbs. the smallest 30 lbs.
