I fish for Carp and burnaby Lake on occassion, and something I know is Carp are very smart, and very sensitivie fish, at the first sign of danger, they will just spit it out. What I'll usually do is use a sliding sinker between two beeds, or just two swivels, and tie some sweet corn on (in a can) and cast it in the water and just sit patiently quietly and wait for the Carp to strike. I'll use a light steelhead rod (around 10 feet, 8-15 pound line rating) with 12 pound mainline and 10 pound leaders, because the Carp and burnaby lake aren't that big, but I'm sure where you fish, the carp can be much larger because of the much more available food suppy. I'd try switching from fly fishing to a spinning rod or drift rod and just fish for carp. The Carp have a keen sense of smell and I'm sure they can smell your korn or whatever sweet you put in the water. Try fly fishing with a short leader and floating line with some Korn and let it sit on top of the water (if the korn will do that but I dont think it floats). I also suggest emaling Ken Kristian as well. Again, fishing for carp requires patienece and they wont attack a hatch as quickly or with as much power as a trout will. They'll take their time, look at it, take at tastes, spit it out, take another taste, spit it out again...I've had Carp spit out my corn many times, as I'll see my rod jitter, I'll move to set the hook and I'll lose it, or sometimes the Carp are so sharp, that they suck the corn off my hook and I'll have to reel in and reapply more corn. My advice, is when targetting these fish, make sure you got a rod with some backbone, because these fish fight HARD for their size, pound for pound stronger than most Salmon. Very comparable to a fresh Chum salmon (hardest fighting Salmon). Anyways, hope this helps, Scott.
