Kalamalka Lake trout?

I was in B.C. last year and I was talking to a guy who said he catches big lake trout in Kalamalka lake. I was wondering if anyone has ever heard about this or fished for them there before? I have never caught a lake trout, but if there is a possibility there I would like to try to catch one. Here comes my problem: I wont have any downriggers on the boat so what can I do? Can I jig for these trout or what? When we fish for kokanee we often see fish near the bottom in over 100 feet of water. Would these be lake trout? How would you fish for these trout without a downrigger on the boat? Also tell me if you think it would be a waste of my time to try to catch one. I could always go try to catch some rainbows in the mountain lakes or something else. I will be there from the last week of July and the first two week of August. Please give me your advice because I have no clue when it comes to lake trout.

H Lake trout have a superb, white, flaky flesh that might remind you of cod (although they obviously don't TASTE the same!) and are well worth the effort to catch. In late May/early June you should be able to catch these guys in the "shallows" (less than 20 ft) in the evening when they move towards shore to spawn. You can catch them on just about anything (spoons, spinners, trolled flies, bait) just be wary of the regulations for the body of water you're fishing. During the summer, when they go deep, you can still fish for them with either lead-cored line and/or a "Deep Six" or "Pink Lady". These are specially designed diving-planes that take your lure down DEEEEEEEEP! I have had good luck with a Canadian Wiggler tied about 2 ft. behind a Dodger and tied the Dodger to a Deep Six (about 8 to 10 ft. ahead of the dodger). The Deep Six will bring the rig down to where you want it, and the dodger gives a nice action to the Wiggler. It sounds rather bulky and borders on overkill, but I have had some wonderful results with this setup. I used to own a downrigger, but when it broke I changed over to this rigging, rather than buying a new one. Good Luck!

I"m not sure about Lk. trout in there. I do know there are some huge bows though. A guy caught one a year or two back that was 24lb. I live in Vernon but I don't fish Kal lake so I can't say as to what type pf gear is best. Alot of ski boats and fun seekers in the summer. If you go for those big bows you may be passing up on other good fishing in the area. Sure would be nice to hook into one of those babies though.
