Sockeye in the Vedder

I know that Sockeye are closed in the Fraser due to a low return of the Stuart run, but if guys are catching Sockeye in the Vedder technically they aren't Stuart run fish. If this is the case are we allowed to keep Sockeye caught in the Vedder? Anyone with info? Please HELP!!!!!!

Stuart, as far as I've heard you may not retain Sockeye in the Vedder.I have not seen anything on this though, it is strictly from word of mouth that I got that.If anyone else knows more than that than hopefully they can post it.

The DFO are out in full force undercover (in street clothes) looking for people who drag Sockeye up on the beach and/or don't release them properly as they have a high mortality rate when Caught and released (from what I've heard, around 70 percent). As far as I know, you are not legally allowed to keep Sockeye on the vedder. They will offer good sport though, as they are so fresh, but make sure you reel them in asap if you get one, and let it go. Of the Sockeye my friends have recently caught in the Vedder, they are all fully bright and Chrome as if they were suddenly transported from the ocean to the Vedder. Hope this helps, Scott.

Actually, it isn't so much of a low return of Stuart sockeye,- it is that many of those fish won't make it up to the Stuart system due to the high water on the Fraser River. Energetically those fish are near their limit in a good year- ie their fat reserves won't be enought for the month long journey up the mighty Fraser.

are you allowed to fish catch and release for sockeye on the fraser right now?

If you catch one-you release it- but you aren't specifically allowed to target them (and really it isn't very ethical for you to target them directly) In other words, if you are you are using gear that is designed to catch sockeye- be prepared to get fined.

note to Cory-when do you sleep?(look at the time of your posting!)LOL!

I was getting up early to go fishing!- I should have slept in though.

Hi Ron, I was at the Vedder yesterday from 9am - 7pm with my daughter and we fished everything from the hatchery to Lickman road with no luck. The hatchery had about 50 red springs in the gates but we did not see anyone catch or hook any salmon.
