What fish species is this?

What fish species is this?

Hi all, can someone tell me what fish species this is? I am looking for both common and scientific name. Thank you! :-)

Either a Baby LingCod or one of the 33 different types of Sculpin found in BC.
Try here for more info http://www.fishbase.org
Also Rod you might find 'Coastal Fishes of the Pacific Northwest' by Andy Lamb & Phil Edgell of use.

hey carl, yeah i'vea already did a bit of scanning through fishbase, most likely a sculpin i guess. not a male greenling maybe?

thanx for the link by the way. :-)

It doesn't look like any sculpin I've ever seen. The colouring and fins make it look kind of different.

I have a laminated card that divers might use to ID local fish and it looks a lot like a Sculpin like creature called a Cabezon (Scorpaenichthys Marmoratus). Photo and more info available at fishbase.org http://www.fishbase.org/Photos/PicturesSummary.cfm?StartRow=1&ID=4140&what=species

It also looks like a lot of other Sculpins as well though.

That looks like one of the Steveston piers in your photo, is that where it came from Rodney? BTW if it is the above, apparently the fish is good eating but the eggs are poisonous.

Rod I think it's a Red Irish Lord. Dunno the Latin but a type of sculpin. Did it look a lot redder in the water?

hey crabs, yeah i think it is a cabezon, that's what my friend said too. neat stuff! thanx for all that info guys, it was very helpful. :-)

By the way, that fish was caught while i was just jigging with a large silver croc spoon and it completely swallowed it.

That ain't no Red Irish Lord-they really are Red and are much uglier/more poisonous.
The Brown Irish Lord is the one to watch for though, I got a scratch from one last year and could feel it right away.
I'm leaning towards the Cabezon explanation m'self I notice some slight blue colouration towards the head, Cabbies are often blue like a Ling but more so.
The Cabezon is one of the tastiest fish in out waters BTW-a Gourmands delight.
Biggest I ever saw was 16+ pounds-uglier than a hat full of crushed ********.

hey carl, so how would you cook a cabezon?
16+ pound, that's huge!

Hey your right Carl. Both good eating though. I got the crap scared out of me by a big one in an old fridge right under the wharf at Egmont. I opened the door and it head butted me in its hurry to escape! How big was it Rod? It is apparently the biggest member of the Sculpin family. I would think you could cook it just like you would ling cod.
BTW Carl the Fishbase link lists both Brown and Red Irish Lords as harmless. What makes you think they are poisonous?

Jab yourself with one of those spines on their back you'll see what I mean.
Of course it's worse with people who are subject to Anaphylactic shock.
Because they are such small buggers it's harder to get a grip when releasing one I don't want to kill the thing I just want it gone. Maybe I'm just unlucky/clumsy but I've been stuck a few times-not fun.
Regular Rockfish spine injuries bother me too, maybe more than other Folks.
As mentioned any recipie for white-fleshed fish is great for Cabbie.

Cook it ? Eat it ? An alien lifeform travels 12 light years from a distant solar system on a mission of peace and inter-species co-operation and it has the bad luck to end up in Richmond where Rod promptly bonks it and fires up the barbeque ?

No wonder that close encounters of the third kind are so rare :)

lol, good one bobber. the fish was actually released so be afraid! very afraid... ;-)

that's brutal carl with the spine. I know there is one particular species of rockfish that they may encounter while bottom fishing in East Asia that is extremely deadly. One prick and within an hour your life will be in danger. the skippers on the boat will always have the antivenom packed on the boat.

Hey Carl, You should try a brown bullhead some time. I stuck myself with one in Ontario years ago, and my hand swelled like a baloon. Hurt like hell. Would reccomend it to anyoune looking for a pain-induced spiritual experience.
Sharp Hooks

There is also a small fish about the same size as the Lords in Scotland and N.England called a weaver(sp?) fish which I was told can kill or seriously damage you. Locals cut the line to avoid touching it.
