World Record Pink Salmon

The new world record humpy was caught Saturday on the Skykomish River in NW Washington - 14.49 pounds! So big and ugly that it looks like it swallowed a frisbee whole. Picture at www.dicknite.com

we got 2 that weighed in at 12 pounds and one was 13 and a bit.... out at sooke this year in august.
What was the world record before this???

We also got a hatchery pink.... anyone know where it was headed??

I believe the world record prior to this was between 12 and 13 pounds, but that was from a couple days ago (by the guide who put the NEW world record holder into this fish). For a long time, there was no Washington State humpy record and then it was only at 6 pounds for a long time because nobody bothered to weigh their "pink slugs." So you were the unofficial world record holder for about a month. :)

It's not any kind of official 'World Record' until it's recognised as such by the IGFA
http://www.igfa.org.
There are a number of hoops to jump through and unless everything is done right, certified scale, witnesses, pictures, line tested, etc., etc. then there is no record except in someone's mind.

Was this pink released or bonked??

Rest assured, all the necessary hoops are being jumped through - like MJ in his prime. The fish was bonked.

How so? There are so many pinks in the Skykomish River this year that WDFW was allowing four per angler (not sure if they still are). Lots of people filling their smokers this year and still an excess making it to the spawning grounds.

I highly doubt that the world record fish got eaten. But I believe that IFGA (Squibhunter sounds like he could verify this) requires the fish to be taken and weighed. I think I read that it was going to be mounted.

Yeah right the fish has to be weighed on a certified scale-on land.
If it's still alive after all the photos and weighing are done well sure you could let it go, I know it's been done with some Sharks in places.
It sure is an ugly SOB- a face only a (desperate) Pink Salmon female could love (!)
The sad part is that there are some people out there who'll think that's what a Salmon looks like.

I think it would make a cool mount. Everyone has seen a mounted steelie or chinook. But I'd love to see people's faces when they see that deformed humpy snarling at them.

Very impressive photo.
Im new to fishing, have never caught one of those ugly things but aside from the fact that pinks arent the best eating fish to start with, would a fish that looks like that be edible at all?
What is the hump made out of?

Chris

Chris,

Once they hit the river and start to turn, they aren't good to eat (unless you enjoy eating mushy, skanky fish). Fun to catch though. Lots of people smoke them..not bad that way.

The hump is just made out of tissue...

Ive have always wondered when this metabolic process begins, and what triggers it. I would assume that it occurs in all spawning fish which makes me think that the mouth of the river would be the best place to catch edible fish.

Chris

metabolic process? you mean metamorphic process? :-) starts pretty early in pinks, depending which river. even at the mouth of fraser, you'll see humps in male pinks already.
