Women Anglers

For those women anglers who want to try some new outdoor pursuits (including fishing related ones such as float tubing), the information on this year's "Becoming an Outdoors-woman" weekends is now available. (A few of the women who post on this site have mentioned attending these workshops). The BOW workshops are a great way to introduce your women friends to some great activities (and guys, a weekend at a BOW workshop is a great gift for the women in your life!). There are two in BC this year, and the information can be obtained from the BCWF office - or it's probably on their website also (www.BCWF.bc.ca). The BOW newsletter also mentions they will be holding some some more-advanced clinics call "Beyond BOW" this year as well - information on these clinics will be available May 1.

Don't feel intimidated, I have found the ladies post and questions more informative and to the point than any of the males with alot less B.S. Keep up the good work ladies and see ya on the river, I'll answer any question and give you any help you need.

I'm curious. We now know of 3 women anglers here. Myself, Rebecca and Marianne. Are there any others that are here but have been staying in the background because they feel intimidated by all the testosterone that is on this board. Please let me know if you would like to talk fishing maybe we can do something so that people are less intimidated!

Marianne,
Yahooo!! Dearest Hubby says go for it and #1 son says yes! Son and I will be coming next summer. We will be leaving the other 2 at home for a few days to fend for themselves. I just have to be home on Aug 6 for my daughters birthday and our wedding anniversary.

Hi Carole. Yes, there are more women anglers out there. I've been checking this site for about eight months now, but felt too intimidated (both as a woman angler and as a novice) to post. Do you know of any sites specifically for women anglers? I've searched the web but been unable to come up with any. I've attended two BOWs, and found the workshops really great for providing information, hands-on training and camaraderie - not to mention encouragement! But I'm always looking for more women anglers to talk fishing with. Thanks for giving me the nudge to post.

Carole, I just found bobber's posting re the womensfishing site. That got me surfing around for other women's sites again. This time did discover a few sites for women anglers: reelwomenconnect.com and www.women-outdoors.com (Unfortunately I'm also a novice at computers, and I'm not sure exactly which page within the women-outdoors site I was on - but it had all sorts of links to other women fisher's sites). I also found the Women's Fishing Partnership (which is no longer being maintained) and Women anglers of Minnesota. I found a link for Women Flyfishers of Alberta (which didn't seem to work), but nothing for BC. I wonder if BCWF would be interested in helping get one started?

I for one would like to say that it embarrasses me to hear of anyone, woman or man, who feels too intimidated to post on this discussion board. All I can say is I am sorry to be associated with the offending gender. I do hope you ladies will continue to contribute, although I wouldn't blame you in the least if you boycotted this site. I too was offended by recent comments made here, and have found myself contributing less and less. (Not because I am intimidated, but because there are fewer and fewer anglers left on this board that deserve the courtesy of conversation, let alone advice or information.) My advice to you is ignore the neanderthals (you will soon recognize them by name) and simply scroll past their dull witted and boorish comments. There are still some good blokes left who will share their insight and experience with you, no matter what you might have to share.

I went to the first BOW in Winfield. Your name is familiar to me. Were you there? You probably know Sharon who is with the medical staff at the last few BOW programs. I went to the first one with her. I also went to the one in Aldergrave at Web's but left because of the poor conditions. You do have a thought though. I bet the BCWF could help us get a page going. I did contact Frank who looks after this site to ask him about having a satellite site for women here. We should wait and see if he replies first.

Marianne
I was talking to my sister tonight and telling her about coming next summer. Apparently she is going to her husbands family reunion in Terrace at the same time we were going to come. She wants to know if you know Jeff Dillies. Do you have room for her family of 4 and me and my son at your bed and breakfast? I sent her your website.
Carole

Sandman,
Thank you so much for your comments. I have heard from a lot of very nice men from this board over the past few weeks and I realize that it is only a few who ruin it for others. Any suggestions from you on how we can get more women posting and not being afraid to say anything or ask anything would be helpful. I am hoping that maybe we can get a side board going for women who would like to post. Men would be welcome also but I think women need to get used to posting and not being worried that men will jump down their throats if something comes out that doesn't sound right. It really doesn't bother me but I know it bothers a lot of women.
Carole

Carole, I went to BOW at Cowichan Lake on the island, and at Loon Lake in Maple Ridge. My friend went to Aldergrove and also left early because of the conditions. I'll follow up with BCWF to check out our options - I know some of the BOWs in the States have websites and discussion boards. I found them once but didn't bookmark them, and haven't been able to find them again. I'll keep trying. I'm also interested in what Frank might be able to set up for us.

Marianne - could you email me information on your B&B? I'd like to come up that way either next summer or the one after.

Sandman - thanks for your encouragement. It's too bad that a few guys can spoil a discussion board for the rest of us. There have been a number of guys who have been really helpful to new anglers, and I appreciate that.

By using the BCWF site, I was able to locate the BOW (Becoming an Outdoors Woman) site. It is located at www.uwsp.edu/bow. They do have a discussion board for women, though it is mostly about American locations and American workshops/events for women. However, it's worth checking out, and might have potential. From the home page listed above, click on "Step Outside", then stroll down to "BOW online discussion page" (called Bowstrings). I've also emailed BCWF to inquire about Canadian possibilities.

I'm a salt water salmon guide from the Campbell River area and have been an active poster on many boards, however, I do find that women discuss things in a different manner. The heavy criticism, flaming, and verbal abuse, that seems to be rampent on almost all of the boards that I have frequented, make it very difficult to keep an intelligent thread of conversation going, and I can understand why some women would feel intimidated. I personally have found myself the subject of verbal attacks and have had both my abilities and my professionalism questioned, based solely on my gender.

Another spot where we could talk freely amoungst ourselves would be wonderful!

I agree Alexis. I just don't get why a bunch of guys get so heated up over something that is supposed to be fun. I started fishing with my grandpa when I was little and have never given it up. I usually fish by myself because most men make it a competition on who gets the biggest or most instead of a co operative effort.

Hope to see more of you girls on here.

I think you hit the nail on the head there, Rebecca.Nice thought isn't it , that we have been as selectively bred by evolution as the hatchery fish we're now arguing about catching. In the wild those of us with a little more self control would perhaps have fallen by the way-side.I too would like to see more women posting.Maybe it'll inject a little more reason into some of the threads. We seem to be suffering from some sort of testosterone overload at times.
