I know I'm leaving myself wide open, but here goes anyways. I am looking for something that will take the smell of roe off my hands. I have tried lemons and ammonia and toothpaste and tomatoe juice along with a number of other concoctions with no luck. There always remains the faint odor of roe. Do any of you have any serious solutions to my problem?

Whenever I handle roe to put it on my hook or whatever, I just immediately wash them after each use.

Lemon or lime, combined with washing right after handling is the best I have come up with, but you mentioned that. I know, it still seems to linger. I wonder how the hell you get it off of a down vest, the damn stuff sticks like to a blanket.

Field wash: "Fast Orange" with lava rock (pumice), no water. Water wash later if you want. Home wash: Swarfega waterless first, then water after, but not during..too slimey. Both formulae available at auto parts outlets. Swarfega is used by paramedics in auto crashes in UK and Europe...it's antiseptic, and dissolves road rash on the way to the hospital.

Thanks so much for the information!

Fast orange is good stuff, theres a motomaster brand at Can Tire which is cheaper. I usually use toothpaste though...Arm and Hammer baking soda if it makes and difference.

Went barfishing several years ago on a Saturday morning before going to a wedding in the afternoon. My wife spent the whole ceremony wrinkling up her nose up trying to figure out where the smell was coming from (I 'fessed up later).

Another tip is an old towel tucked under the belt... immediately after baiting up, wipe off patties w/towel....if really hot and heavy, one can rinse off the towel in the drink, and use it damp.

I have taken a soapy wet washcloth in a ziplock bag to wash with after baiting the hook before. I still smelled like roe. Went to get the surgical gloves but kid had used them already so for today I made him bait the hooks. I guess that is the answer. Just pull rank and put him him in charge of the roe. Didn't catch anything, not even a bullhead. Saw one fish rise and that was it, didn't even see any seals around. Tried using roe, spinning glows and fooled around with the fly rod. The river seemed quiet and almost dead today. Sure less fish of all kinds around then there used to be.

Marianne, I tried crest and it worked to a point. Spratt uses arm and hammer. What kind do you use? I'm wondering if this makes a difference. It would be an easy solution to just throw a tube of toothpaste into the tackle box and go if it works.

My advice would be to make some decent roe. Make sure the roe air dries until it is tacky then cut it into borax via the shake n bake method. Go heavy on the borax. When you head out fishing pick out the roe you need from your larger container and transfer it to another day box with fresh borax. The more borax the better because after all it is natures own detergent. Other than that I would advise you to stop using roe. I can only think of a few instances where roe actually helps out. If you are bar fishing run no bait and you will catch just as many fish.

We were just talking about makeing our own roe a few days ago. Thanks again for all the ideas. We'll be trying them all and I hope at least one of them will work.

People secrete a hormone called L-Serine that the fish can detect. I usually deliberately wipe my hands down with prawn oil or fish attractant just to cover it up. It is true that there is a smell to the roe - but I find that washing up after fishing is better. I usually use a towel and just water during a fishing day. All these things may eliminate the roe smell but I'd bet my bottom dollar that the smell that they give off tells the prey a thing or two... Just a thought...
