Who else has knows of the legend of Mad Mack of Allouette Lake?

This was told to me way back in 1994, when I got my first car. I drove it out to Allouette lake and walked down to the two docks that used to be there. An old man was sitting in a boat tied up to the dock. I asked him if he had any luck. He said he caught a couple. So to make idle conversation I said "They say there's some pretty big fish in this here lake" Witch the old man replied "Yep"
I then said "They say the Lakers are 40KG's" Then the old man raised an eyebrow and said "Son, there's Laker's so big in here, they can swallow a man whole!" Witch I said "Uh-huh" not really believeing him. He then said "You ever hear of Mad Mack"? "Mad Mac"? I asked. He switched eyebrows and asked "What other names do poeple call Lakers"? "Uh...Mackinaw"? I was getting nervous about this guy. "THATS RIGHT" he almost yelled. "What, is he 15-20 feet long or somthing"?
I asked. "He just might be that big, aint that right"? his friend came back with their truck.
"You don't really wanna tangle with Big Mack" the new guy said. "Gole dang it,the fishes name is Mad Mack"! then the two old men argued while they loaded up their truck. and I took off.

In Nov 12,1997 I went fishing by gold creek at the far end. I stopped at the enbankment to veiw the sights. I saw "Something" moveing thru the water's surface leaveing a wake. At first I thought it was a duck. But it was moveing to fast to be a duck. Besides what would a duck be doing in the middle of the lake? Then I thought it might be a otter or something. but it was going straight up the lake, then it made a sharp left turn and started towards the shore. It was about a couple of hundred meters from shore when it submerged. I stared at that spot for twenty minutes and it never surfaced again. I don't thing otters can hold their breath that long.

On May 3rd,1998 me and my friends took their 18' boat to Allouette Lake to fish for lakers. we didn't get a nibble. however on the sonar there would be no fish. then three fish would appear, then nothing for about fifteen minutes, then three fish would appear. This happened all day.

Here's my theory: The Mackinaw travel in three's so when somebody fall in the water, one fish gets your legs, one gets your body and the other fish gets yer head.

So any idea's as how to catch mackinaw in Allouette?

a whole chum salmon for bait

Mr Maloney, or is it Baloney? Nice setup, but just posting from the Fraser Valley Library a few times doesn't create a new identity and make this post anymore believable.

We could start a thread on fiction writing for you?

I'm confused - are we talking about catching Salvelinus namaycush, or an old blanket ? I've found that the latter put up a chinook-like fight and have to be smoked to be edible. A pretty catch though - there aren't enough plaid fish, in my opinion.

That's about thr biggest pile of B.S. I've ever heard, but it was kind've amusing:}

I wonder if there were ever any Sturgeon that made it up the Alouette into Alouette Lake when Alouette River wasn't Dammed (and had like 7 times the amount of water coming down it like it used to instead of a lot of it being diverted into the Stave system like it is now for the Stave Falls/Ruskin Generatin stations).

I was believing it. Good story.

I am gonna go after it with a cut plug

Hey, I don't know if that old man way back when was a crazy old coot telling a young kid (me,Jack Maloney) a tall fish tale or there is some truth to the story.

Hey Franky, Prove to us that there isn't huge fish in Allouette Lake. Maybe you should call Fox
Mulder and Scully from "X-Files" to go fishing with you.

But thats the story the old man told me. I just got a new boat, so how do you fish for the normal
size fish?

Allouette Lake
Fishing Report: Although the number of fish are great (with over 61,000 stocked up to 1990), the large size and the great depth of the lake makes sure there is not a large number caught. Rainbow average about 1 lb. and Cutthroat and Kokanee that can average 1 to 1-1/2 lbs. Lake Char can reach 20 lbs. or better. The steep drop off of the lake makes finding a good fishing spot difficult and the shallow end that would be good for fishing is heavily used with the campsites and picnic areas. The many bays and streams and the shoreline would probably produce the best results but while out on the lake beware of Mad Mac. If there is any encounter with Mad Mac immediately return to the nearest shoreline and contact your local Fisheries or conservation officer. Remember while out on Allouette Lake, you are fishing at your own risk.

A Mackinaw is a coat... However, to catch what lies beneath. Use a dead goat hung for 13 days and smothered in molasas. Use a 11 / 0 gamugatsu hook and some aircraft cable. Call the fish 3 times by its true name: Farlok. And wait. If that doesn't work then stop smoking whatever you were smokin' when you came up with this bit o' Canadiana...

gotta get it with an 18 chironomid
