Releasing fish

<14722>
There is a topic titled "TV Shows on B.C. Fishing" in this General Discussion section that addresses the poor catch and release methods by some of the hosts of these programs.
I have watched an eastern Canada fishing show on the outdoor channel that absolutely appalled me. Below is what I wrote on that posting:

"The worst handling of released fish that
I have ever seen on TV is constantly performed by the host of the show Fishful Thinking. Charlie (forgot his last name). He holds the fish vertically with his hand right inside the gill plate touching the gills. Sort of the way we sometimes hold our dead keepers for the camera. That is going to probably kill all his released fish. He does this on every show...WHAT AN IDIOT. I am going to write the show and complain!"

Has anybody else noticed this? We should all call or write the show and complain.
On the other posting about B.C. shows there are complaints about Gary Cooper and his poor release techniques.These complaints should be taken further by sending Gary letters. Gary and his "torpedoing" of the fish can be bad if the fish is tired but not nearly as bad technique as this guy on Fishful Thinking.

Gary Cooper is a loser! Gary hooked into a huge haibut on one of his shows......the captain of the boat shot the fish at the side of boat. THEN tossed the casing over board into the water!

on the few minuits of the dimestore fishermen that i could bare to watch i saw the hosts just tossing the fish that they had held out of the water for a long time back in with out even reviving the fish at all their guide lifted a few of the bull trout they caught out of the water buy jamming his fingers in the gills both the guiding service and the show are going to get letters from me

There was another eastern show whose name I cannot recall where the "expert" angler Mr. Frank Papineau held a smallie bass out of the water by the lips for 65 seconds....30 of which was fumbling around trying to extract the plug with all the hooks, and the rest for us the viewing audience to see. On the same show, he gilled a pike and held it vertical for around 40 seconds...I obtained the e-mail address at the end of the show, and wrote a fan letter. Funny thing... that show seems to have gone away. Guess others must have written in, too. Breaks my heart.

The scary part about fish release times on any show is how much is edited out from the actual time the fish is kept out of the water. What looks like 20 or 30 seconds could be much longer. The Dime Store segment on McNaughton Lake mentioned above was the WORST release I've seen in years. Yanking the fish by the gills and holding it out of the water for a minute or more would make it's death a high certainty!

Most expert hosts treat the fish very poorly.

Are you allowed to keep those little trout on the Vedder that people catch all the time? I know they have to be hatchery but is there a certain length? I see peple keeping little 5 inch trout all the time and it really pi**es me off! Also can you keep Dolly Varden's?

<14746>
how many of those little 5 inch trout do u think are steelhead smolts?

<14751>
NO YOU MUST RELEASE ALL DOLLIES!!!!

<14753>
You must release all trout/char under 30cm from streams or sloughs and you must release all WILD trout/char from streams or sloughs in Region 2.
I have also seen people keep what they call pan-friers from the Vedder and I'm sure the majority are newly released smolts. Many people are still ignorant of the regs and it's up to us to set them straight. I always say something if people are obviously targetting these little trout. Upside is most people listen. Downside is you could end up with a baseball bat upside the head on the Vedder.

<14755>
Looks like I should stock up on the 7 irons this season.

<14758>
You MUST release ALL dollies in the lower mainland,Total catch and release

<14760>
Bad news for those who want to see the Vedder River hatchery trout grow to fair sizes. The regulations state:
Vedder/Chilliwack Rivers - hatchery rainbow trout of any length 50 cm or less: daily quota = 4, July 1 - April 30.

<14762>
Hmmm, Steve you appear to be correct. Think this is a mistake in the regs or that you can really take these tiddlers?

<14766>
When a river or lake is specified in the regulations, what is written takes precedence over regional regulations of the same catagory.
Unfortunately, people can take four tiddlers a day.

<14770>
Well I will continue to lie and tell people they can't take them. Hopefully they are too ignorant to read the regs.
