did anybody witness the two guide boats swamping every body at the mouth of dewdny slough sunday? they soaked everything I had ,camera, lunch, and gear.

If you fish right next to the boat launch, as lots of guys do, expect to get wet. The slough is huge...theres no reason to fish beside the launch and toss your lines 100 feet out into the slough

Yes, I was there. I was fishing futher up and heard the rumble of the jets. I could not believe it when I saw it...the wake these things made was something else...There were about a hundred really p*ss*d off anglers. The boats were both Wooldridges one green with a green top and the other dark blue with a black top. Would love to know who they belong to. Fishing next to the boat launch had nothing to do with it. They ran these boats up at low tide in about 4 feet of water to just below the "white pipe" below the bridge and anchored. Where i was, the waves were still 3 feet high. The mud and garbage these things stired up finished my day of flyfishing.

Probably some Guide that thinks he/she own the river. Same with every river. It's a shame but what can you do, it will get worse and worse every year. P.S. This is not reffering to every guide, there are still many ethical and nice guides around.

I don't care if a guy is fishing next to the ramp or not.The jerk running the jetboat has no right to swamp another vessel. The operator of a boat is responsible for the wash from their craft, and any damage caused by same.Running a boat like that is plain irresponsible. If I were swamped by this guy I would put in a complaint to the RCMP.I see way too many of these smart asses on the water.By the way,If you call Cascade supply in Chilliwack(suppliers of wooldridge boats)I'm sure that they can tell you who is running them in that area.

The big green woolridge with the green top is Wayne's (owner of Cascade Industrial Equip) Does 1/2 a dozen trips a year for Freds Fishing Adventures. The big Blue Woolridge also guides for Freds. Both these guys don't guide that much but i believe they were this weekend. I would call Fred and make your concerns known. I'm sure he will have a talk with them. I have disscussed this issue at length with them because we have had issues of the same at the mouth of the Harrison. Most of the regular guides who work the river on a daily basis are pretty good about controlling their wake, it's mostly the weekend warriors that don't. Either way there's no excuss for throwing large wakes in tight areas. There is a large number of big jet boats now on the Fraser, most which are NOT GUIDES. Some have respect for others some don't.

Thanks for the info Vic, I definitely will call Fred's and voice my opinions. That was not cool what those guys did.

Thanks for the info vic,I will also call fred.

My apologies...obviously these guys in the jet sleds were in the wrong.

most of the slough has a 8km (5mph) speed regulation and many in a variety of powered boats do not respect it. More and more I feel we need a powered vessel ban on such waters. Last couple of trips I've had no problem rowing my inflatable around the slough. Power isn't necessary

All boat operators are responsible for their wakes and any damage that results from same. It certainly wouldn't hurt to talk to the RCMP as well as Fred. A case in Campbell River involving a cruise liner and a small sailboat tied up to the dock was found in favour of the sailboat owner. The judge quoted the law regarding being responsible for wakes. You might have to threaten small claims court, I'm not sure, but if damage was done you can get reparations, and if word got out, it might just slow the idiots down.

Called Fred's, he is on holidays. Spoke to Ryan who didn't think it was a big issue " a few waves can't spoil your fishing" was his response. He seemed to think it was a big joke, as he chuckled when I ended the conversation. They might ask their guys to slow down a bit he said, but they had no other complaints and he wasn't concerned about their reputation.

I received an email from Tony, on behalf of Fred's Hello Frank, this is Tony from Freds fishing Adventures/Harrison Bay . Regarding the boat swamping in the Dewdney slough, There were no guides from either Freds Fishing Adventures or Harrison Bay Guided Services in the area . There was a boat owned by Cascade Supply & Marine in the area, but it was not operated by any of our guides. If you ever have any issues regarding the conduct of our guides please call us . Frank I can understand the frustration out on the river regarding boat operation among Guides and Fishermen in general. It is important to understand that not all Jet boat operators are a problem, considering the the number of boats on the water there are not too many problems out there. The problems generally occur in the smaller systems such as the Harrison, Stave, Dewdney, and Vedder river systems. In many cases the only reason we even enter these smaller systems is because of fisheries closures on the Fraser. Trust me, we would rather fish with out confrontation and crowds. If the D.F.O. would just get there heads out of the sand, and take away the Red Zone, a lot of our problems of crowding and waking would go away. Frank, we try to ensure our guides are courteous to other user groups on the river, and some times they will make mistakes but as a general rule I believe they are pretty good and in many cases help out when other boaters are having problems. Let us know if you have any concerns regarding our guides, but do not put the blame or bad word out on us with out knowing the facts. It is hard to keep what I believe is a good reputation on the river, when other people are pointing the finger at the wrong person. Best Regards Tony Nootebos Thanks for the quick response Tony, I edited your cell phone number. Admin |

The public at large has had some differences of opinion with "guide boats" here as well. Our guiding community is a pretty good bunch of guys. To help the public in their identification of "guide boats" all the guides got together, and purchased small triangular pennants to fly (too small to call a flag) It's green, and has a fish sillouette on it. Amazing what has happened: the number of "Those %^&*()- DAMN GUIDE BOATS" dropped from dozens and dozens to under 5 ! We get some serious yahoos out there both from town and from out of country/province. A line heard at the boat launch recently: "Do you know where the local tire store is? How would you like to learn?"
