Engaged or Disengaged

What is the benefit to an engaged or disengaged level wind system?? I have a reel that has a disengaged system, I haven't tried it yet but I am thinking it may be a problem, hope to hear your input thanks.

Dear Ryan,
You disengage (or push the button) to cast with that type of reel. It should then engage, once you turn the handle forward to wind in the line. Hope this helps,

Thanks, but I already know that. What I mean is when you cast the bar will not go back and forth in sync with the line coming out.

Sorry bud,
but the gear is probably torn up. Take it into a shop and have them check it. Estimates are usually free.

On the gear is a little thing called a "paul" (spelled phonetically, not sure what the actual spelling is) that sits in the gear and makes the line guide move back and forth as the line feeds. If you take it out and have a look at it, there should not be any grooves near the tip. If there are, it should be replaced, and should solve your problem. The Fraser river tends to have a lot of fine grit in it, and takes these out in about a year of fishing. Rinsing your reel in clean water after your trip helps, but they still wear out.
The pieces cost about $5 each, depending on where you get them, and most tackle stores keep a few in stock, especially for the Abu Ambassadeur series reels.
Hope this helps... good luck.

what kind of reel do you have? The line guide does not move back and forth on the Shimano reels when you freespool but it does on the Abu's. It may be okay if that is the way it is supposed to operate. Lee is right though when he says the worm gear and "paul" wear out quite often on Abu's. Invest in a Calcutta if you get tired of changing parts.

My original question was or was intended to be what is the benefit of a disengaged system if there is one over an engaged system? I know my reel has a disengaged system so it is meant not to do that, nothing on it is broken. It's an Abu Garcia Tournament Pro 5600 and it has this system. I didn't realiaze this until after I bought it by looking on the box, stupid of me.
