DFO Opinions

I know that this topic will have lots of differing opinions, so I thought I start it up and see what happens.
One of the things that gets brought up a lot on this site is DFO's lack of action on certain topics. I, like most of you, would like to see a little more of a presence on our rivers, to ensure both the continued improvement of our resource, as well as keeping those that are destroying our pass-time from ruining it for the rest (Example - Scale Bar).
DFO is in a situation right now where there enforcement personelle will only be working from Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm... what kind of coverage are they going to get with that?... and with the sparse resources that they have for the upper Fraser, good luck seeing them when you're out. In my opinion, DFO should limit themselves to being a resource/habitat enforcement agency, and leave the regular native/commercial/sport fishery enforcement to someone else... RCMP, Provincial Conservation, or a group like that. At least the former has some support from management when it comes to investigations, and maybe they wouldn't bow to the pressure from Native groups. It would be nice to see the fishery managed in such a way that all user groups have a proper share, with the key element in any decisions being the continued development of the resource.
I know that Fred Helmer has discussed DFO's enforcement in the recent past. I'd be interested in hearing the opinions of others!
Tight lines for Sockey for the next few days... Hopefully I'll see you out ther!

It is ironic that the less fish there is the less enforcment. i can remember my Dad telling me about the maney times he was almost caught by the feds as he did little food fishery for his folks.it would seem that there was a fed behind every tree. This being in the thirties when as they say you could walk across the fraser with out getting wet there were so many fish. Now that the fish stocks are dissappering, not just the salmon, not enough of us seem to care. And I am sureFred has good reason to be concerned with the closers by the DFO,but what about the fish. We as humans should have a long hard look at what we are really doing to the fish stocks all around the world. Blame the Feds and the local goverments if you want to but what it really comes down to is greed. One of the best things the Feds did was to close the scale bar. If you think it was closed because of some idiots I suggest you think again. Lee if we could get rid of the G word then we would have all that neat stuff you say.
