Ken, for float fishing, I think the best leader material is anything maxima. Depending on your main line, your leader should be about 2-5 pounds lighter test (or it can be even to your main line) I usually purchase the leader material, but now I find I have a lot of extra line off of extra spools of line I've unspooled during the season change. Go out and buy one big spool of 12 pound test for steelhead leaders nad a big spool of 20 pound test for springs, and you're set for a few years for line for leaders. As for cheap gear, i've found a couple places with some great deals for gear. I think most fishing tackle shops can be a rip off for some gear. Places like Army and Navy have good deals on their floats (like 99 cents each) Babcocks, sells 100 swivels for about 8 bucks, which is a good deal, they also sell about 100 gamakatsu hooks for around 50 bucks which is a good deal. I think the best thing to do when fishing and buying gear is to buy whole sale. Things such as corkies, well most corkies are around 29 cents each but some places will have a pack of 5 for like 1.40 (like army and navy) or you can buy 3 for 79 cents at bobs fishing and hunting on hastings. things like worms I dont know much about buying cuz I rarely buy them, but you have to hunt around to find places that sell certain gear for certain prices. The thing to think, is think wholesale, I like getting my gear outta the way for a few seasons, and you save money as well because although fishing is a great activity it can be expensive. If you think about it, I tie my own setups, so i'll go out and buy a leader board (2 bucks) 12 swivels is about 90 cents, 1.5 packs of gamakatsu hooks is abou 5-6 bucks, corkies, say you have 12, x 29 cents each well that equals out to about 3.50, line say you buy one leader line material portion, thats about 3.50, weight is about 3-4 bucks per thing of pencil lead plus tubing which is about anywhere from 50 cents to a buck a foot...trying your own twelve set ups gets to being a very expensive thing, thats why, think wholesale people.
