Gammies in Bulk?

<7075>
I hate buying those little 8 packs of Gammakatsu hooks for close to $4 - or the Yamamotos for that matter.

When buying top quality flytying hooks, I can get 25 (over 3 times as many) for about double that price and 100 for maybe $24 or so cutting the cost per hook in half! You can find Eagle Claw in 50 packs for arounf $7 or $8

Anyone know where to get those japanese octupus hooks in bulk?

<7077>
Gammakatsu hooks are nice, but totally overrated, especially in price. The day I spend $4 dollars on 8 hooks, well it will never happen. Eagle Claw hooks are great and have never given me any problems. If the hook gets dull, I just pull out my hook sharpener and get back to fishing, end of story.

I too have stopped gettign Gammies. and as well now buy Eagle Claw.

Just wonderign if hook colour really matters? Asked many people, and had different opinions. Wondering if anybody here has noticed a difference. Silver, black, even the gamakatsu white glow ones I have a few of.

Eagle claws are ok - but the lazer sharps still need to be sharpened. they have a lot of quality control problems - mis-shaped hooks and worst of all a very high inceidence of rough metal edges in the wire taper cut at the eye. Cuts your knot and good bye fishy.

Ralph, the only place I've seen them in bulk (100's) has been in the States. I believe that Ace Hardware in Lynden has them, and places like Outdoors Emporium and Sportco in Seattle. Maybe someone carries them in bulk closer to home, but I haven't come across them.

<7089>
Go withe pack of 50 eagles for 7$ they work great and are best in black. COlour does make a differance. I find gammies a waste of money. When the eagles get dull sharpen them up ort hrow a new one on. I wont pay that price for gammies. Besides if you are fishing the right size leader you can almost alwaus get a good hookset.

I use nothing but Eagle Claw. Take a Gamikatsu and an Eagle Claw side by side and look at the way the shank is bent. I find the Eagle Claw set better.

I checked the Berry's Bait web site and they do carry Gammies - @ about $37/$38 per 100. That's a saving of about 9 cents a hook or 20% considerably lower than the savings on going from a 25 pack to a 100 pack of Tiemco's (better than 25%). I think Normark is hosing consumers big time on the price of gammies though gammies are so much a better hook than EC's in every way - but I may ahve to make due with EC's for the most part - I've got a big stock of 'em so I guess I gotta use them.

VMC of France used to market great hooks - whatever happened to them?

<7102>
VMC's are a great hook. They carry them at Fred's in Chilliwack.

<7105>
They also carry them at Chilliwack Dart And Tackle the last time I checked.

<7110>
They have a type of hook at Berry's that is excellent. I apologize I can't remember the name offhad, but they are amazingly sharp and strong. They are quite cheap, around 5 bucks for 25, so they are substantially cheaper than the Gami's(Which I don't buy) and they are quite stout so they don't bend. Just look with the hooks at Berry's and they are the cheap ones, with a brand you won't recognize and they are around 5 bucks.

I do ocassionaly use Eagle Claws when fishing is really hot, and I don't care if I lose the odd fish. But for the most part I use Gammies.

Gammies stay sharper than Eagle Claws. But the real big difference is that Eagle Claws bend out way easier than Gammies do.

<7312>
Haven't any of you tried Vision hooks? They're cheaper than the Gamos and every bit as sharp. The ECs are awful unless you want to sharpen constantly.

<7331>
Steve Olson,
Talk to Vic Carrao about the Visions hooks, he got a whole pile of free ones to test out with his guiding operation, and he came to the conclusion that they're to say it nicely, sh*t. I too have used them and I've had them break when I'm crimping the barb. They are a mirror image to the GAmmies in profile and compsure but they are a bit more fragile/prone to break. I like the bronze eagle claws, the nickel ones bust, but the bronze ones can be sharpened til you draw blood and they can be resharpened a few times. You can't go wrong for the price and they get the job done.
