Sliding vs. non sliding weights
<9211>
I was reading some articles and I stumbled across a page with some weighting techniques. They showed sliding vs. non sliding weight set ups and I was wondering if anyone knows the advantages or disadvantages to the sliding weight set up. I've only used the non sliding set up by way of a piece of lead with a punched hole attached to a snap on my swivel.

From my bottom fishing days i remember that a sliding weight would allow the fish to run with the line before feeling resistance. You didn't mention if you were referring to bottom fishing, floatfishing or trolling in the chuck or using a downrigger

Sorry about the oversight. I would be on the river float fishing or bottom bouncing.

Thanks

And please forgive me for my lack of knowledge but what is the main advantage to having the fish run with the line a bit before feeling the resistance?

I belong to an organisation here in the UK known as the Flydressers Guild, at our last meeting we had a profesional flytyer demonstrating the method of tying some very realistic patterns of stonefly nymphs which frequent rocky sreams in his part of the world i.e. Yorkshire. He had first tried the pattern heavily wieghted but by experiment or accident, discovered that the most killing method was to use an unwieghted fly with a 3 mm Tungston bead threaded on the leader. This had the effect of presenting the nymph in a nose down position as the bead trundled along the bottom. Not the same as with bait fishing but sounds like it would work.
As for why you would want the fish to feel resistance, surely it gives the fish a chance to move off with the bait and not spit it out the moment it feels resistance

John when River Fishing here in BC I've found that a sliding weight works best in slower water, fixed weight in faster.
I still use the 'punched hole' but attach a snap swivel to the pencil lead and thread the line thru 'back end' the swivel-this is the smallest snap swivel you can buy.
In my mind just runing the line thru the 'punched hole' in the lead would lead to line twist as the weight bumps things (bottom) from time to time.
Remember that you don't want your weight to drag bottom constantly, bumping occasionally is fine.

ON WEIGHTS: there is a deep, dark secret out there.... and that is the source of a decent sized
cavity pyramid mold for bar fishing wts ....all the stores are (of course) claiming non-availability of the bigger molds, so they can continue to sell 8, 10, and 12 ounce weights at the market rate, poured by Gibbs, or whomever.

Internet searches are the same.... the cavities stop at about 6 ounces.

With all the bar fishers that visit this board, somebody must have the answer !!!!! Where to get a mold for the larger sized leads? I have access to about 500 pounds of pure lead, no wheel weights.

Thanks in advance. kd

I have a pyramid mold that can make up to 18 ounce size . My dad had it made at a metal shop for$20
also have wedge shaped molds.

I'm very glad for you, Mike, but that still does not do diddley for me, does it. The question was where can *** I *** get a mold... not all about yours from "a metal shop".....unless you were trying to say I ought to do the same.....Been there, done that.....they want 175.00 here for a single cavity mold. At a loss rate of 3 per day,
I'd need to fish a very long time just to pay for the mold... let alone save money, and die of lead fume ingestion........*grin*.............

find a small metal fab shop, they need to cut four triangles out of scrap thin sheet steel ,a few spot welds and done , maybye 15 minutes of work,I set mine in the top of a can,the mold does not look good but works. The key words here are SMALL SHOP. the guy I go to charges 30 bucks a hour.

Just my two bits... but maybe if you know some kid in high school he (or she!)could probably make one in metal shop for the price of materials after school in about ten minutes! Sounds pretty easy, and maybe something that they could make for a project and be graded on it!

Great idea, Lee...I'll run it by the metal working teacher for next year, as there is less than a month of classes left....giving me ample time to possibly dumpster-dive for scrap aluminum.

Good luck... let me know if it works!
