Leader material

I'm just wondering about peoples leader preferences. Does anyone use the maxima chameleon? How about Berkely Vanish?

<9667>
Leaders for what? Bar fishing, drift fishing fly fishing ?

<9669>
Sorry, just to clarify, i'm talking about drift fishing & back bouncing

<9671>
I prefer Maxima Ultra Green

<9673>
Same as Ryan

<9677>
Dont use anything but MAXIMA or you will will lose fish! and not to mention more gear.

<9678>
I've always used ultragreen myself. I have heard good things about flourocarbon leaders, like Vanish. Don't get out much, so i don't want to lose a bunch of fish experimenting with other than the tried and true.

<9681>
Don't use Vanish. It can't hold a knot worth a damn. I'm still skeptical about maxima but it seems the best out there.

<9682>
fleurocarbon is WEAK!

<9686>
Vanish is a product that seemed rushed onto the Marketplace, too many problems with it.
As to Flourocarbon being weak, tell that to the guys in San Diego who use it on the Long Range boats to land 300lb Yellow Fin, from an anchored boat!
Its true you need good knot tying skills to use it for Salmon fishing.

We did a knot test. Maxima, Stren, Berkley Big game. We took a fish scale and tied a knot and then pulled on the scale The worst was Big Game. And the best was Maxima. I use nothing but Maxima. That to me is the best RIVER line.

Flourocarbon all the way!!! Never used anything that even compares. Just remember it takes hundreds of year to decinigrate, so be wise about it's use and when you're done with it throw it in the garbage not in the water.

Give me an M!
Give me an A!
Give me an X!
Give me an I!
Give me an M!
Give me an A!
Whats that spell MAXIMA!!!

The only way to go.

Try the special Triple Fish... you will not be saddened...not the green regular, but the brown special. Whatever "perlon" is.... that's what the special triple fish is.

PS.... Triple Fish is also from Germany.

50 pound test Charter boat. Nothing but the best for me!!!!! :)

Ralph Cutter a US angling writer and tackle shop operator tested a variety of leader material a few years ago - all leader tested was soaked in water prior to testing. Maxima had one of the lowest relative knot strengths of all types tested. Modern co-polymer lines have greater strength by diameter though that isn't the only charatceristic that makes a good line. I've used a lot of different lines including maxima - most of the premium brands are very good in my experience. Certainly Maxima doesn't stand head and shoulders above them - in my humble opinion.

Barry's choice of 50 actually is a little light.... we use CharterBoat in 60 pound test as a shock leader on 40 pound main line at Idiot Rock.....an aptly named spot at Moricetown Reserve. This for the abrasion resistant qualities of CharterBoat when the springs are beached in very rocky terrain.

whats up with all the little kinks in maxima line.Next time you buy a new spool un ravel it and look at it very closely

Brad - pay attention to the way you're unravelling it. Pull straight out, not along the spool.

I no this guy that has been fishing since he was a little kid and he says out of all the lines he has every used Maxima is the best. And he's pretty old now!

I do pull it straight out.It still has lots of little kinks.Is this a defect maybe??Do any of you have this same problem?????????

Try pulling it through your hands with lots of friction to heat it up a bit. That should straighten it out. You can actually buy a gadget, don't know what's it called, but essentially it's two pieces of leather and you run the line through it. If that doesn't work I don't know what will. Throw it in the garbage then I guess.

Brad - what you have is probably just old then. If it's more than one spool that is kinking then maybe the store you are buying it from still has old stock. I don't know if the leader straightener will work for that but Sunrise makes one that retails for about $2.99 and it's a good thing to keep around. Take any bad spools back to the store - they will exchange it.
