Lines : comparative info

Leafing through some old magazines I came across an article by Bob Jones in Winter '91 issue of BC Outdoors. Jones compared over 20 different brands of lines. The reference was 10lb tst . It's interesting to see how Maxima Chamleon and "Ultragreen" fared in these. For line diamter (dry and wet)where thinest for a given rated test was best, Ultragreen was 20th, Chamleon was 21st. Best was Sunline Siglon followed by Abulon and Berkley Tri-lene XL green. Both Maxima lines were about 30% thicker than Berley Trilene XL green and close to 50% thicker than the thinest line tested, Sunline Siglon. Charter boat was last. For tensile strength (breaking stress) Chamleon was 2nd and ultraGreen was 5th. Trilene XT solar was 1st, Berkley Trimax 3rd and Bagleys Silver thread 4th. Ultragreen was 1st for abrasion resistance (115.8 wet) Chamleon was 4th (102.8 wet). Other top performers included Trilene XT solar (2nd at 107.4 wet), Charter Boat (4th at 105.2)

Jones rated Sunline Siglon as the best overall followed by Berkley Trimax and Trilene XL Solar. Chamleon rated 9th out of a field of 22 while Ultragreen rated 12th. This rating was based on the ratio of wet diameter to wet tensile strength.
I would note that the best line, Siglon also came in dead last for abrasion resistance suggesting Jone's rating method does not reliably rate overall line quality.

It would appear that the folks who favour Maxima products rely on it's abrasion resistance. However given it is such a thick line I wonder if the same could be acheived with other brands by moving up to the next breaking strength class.

One of probably a zillion test pages:

This particular one has a lot of the major brands...and features different weight classifications.
