Centerpins

I'm looking into buying a used 'pin in the next few weeks and I'm looking for advice on reels such as the Drifter, JW Young Seldex(or older models),Silexes,Grice and Young etc.I know a lot of guys that post here fish 'pins, so any advice/comments/recommendations is appreciated. My budget doesn't include a Milner or McDonald, or any of the other premium reels unforunately.

My advice if you are buying a used reel is to get a newer model unless you are a colector. Older reels have smaller drums and are better suited to the larger diameter lines of years back. Most modern reels are 4 or 4.5 inches in diameter and have a narrower spool. This works better for todays lines. I have no experience with ball bearing reels but have heard that they can freeze if they get a dunking in the colder months. Bushings are pretty low maintenance. The Seldex is a good entry level reel.

Seldex. And don't be afraid of the older ones as long as the pin is still straight. I've got two of the 3 3/4 inchers. I bought them for less than $100 each and they work great. I find the wide drum easier to fish with than the 4 1/4 narrow drums that Maurice mentioned. They are tough reels too. I dropped my first Avon and it broke right off the foot of the reel. As far as I'm concerned, J.W. Young are the best.
