Newbie Centerpin questions

Hey there

Recently bought a used JW Young 2040 Purist centerpin reel...good condition but I have never owned one before so what do I know hehe.

Some questions though please:

How do I clean/maintain the reel?

What are those springy things on the face of the spool that can be adjusted...how do I adjust them and for what purpose?

Importantly, what technique should I use in casting with a centerpin?

Is there anywhere I can buy/replace the handles on the JW Young?

What sort of line should I use? (there is some line on it now, it looks like there is the mainline monofilament and a different coloured backing...just a guess)?

Thanks a heap guys (and gals)!

Would you consider selling your reel? I have a Purist but would love another one for a friend. DO NOT adjust the springs. If you push out on the small one it will pop the spool of the drum, this is how you open the reel up. Use Q-Tips and clean out the inside of the reel. Go to Fanny's Fabrics and buy some sewing machine oil. One or two drops on the pin and the reel should spin for over 30 seconds easy. Don't put more than 2 drops of oil on the pin as it makes a mess and you don't need more. Leave the backing on the reel and fill it the rest of the way with Maxima line (I use 12 pound Chameleon). Don't use heavier than 12 lbs. As for casting, hard to describe without showing. Rig up your rod with a float and weight but no hook. Go into the back yard or a park and practice there. It'll save you learning at the river. A hint, swivel your waist around so you are facing away from the river, now let the reel start spinning and swing the rod to cast. Make sure you stop the reel before the line hits the water or you'll backlash it.
Good luck,
Steve

Steve,

I just noticed your post for another reel...we have a couple at Berrys and would love to see them go...good reel, just not selling many...

thanks for the info steven, but unfortunately I have already played with the springs...seems like there is only one you can adjust...it is a small wheel than can be turned clockwise/counter clock to tighten or loosen the spring...of course the more I tighten it the less the reel spins and the more I back it off the more the reel spins...like for over 2 minutes..it just goes and goes....have I destroyed the reel :0? what should the "default"spring settings be at?

sorry but I have wanted one of these reels for a looong time so I want to keep it :)...the ones at berrys bait are real nice and they sell them for $399...I bet they would let ot go for less if you offer cash...I'd offer $350 tax included..but I am a real barterer...stores hate me lol....thanks again for the info....

ps...one last thing....when the Purist spins is it supposed to be completely silent...or have a very light metal on metal sound?

thanks again

bongo, when a purist spins it has a humming sound to it

SBM,

Purists are for city boys who know absolutely nothing about what a reel should and shouldnt do. Like many pieces of fishing equipment it is made to catch fishermen and not fish.

Catostomus,

Did I say I use One? Better be careful of what you say about city boys...we grew up on the river too,we all were members of the UIC steelheading team for many years...Seems like the team has grown a bit since however...
Maybe I would try a purist after you pulled my Super out of my cold dead fingers!!! I just want to help the guy out...

I may live in the city, and be a boy...but in my heart I am all country...a friend to all cows...a protector of bluegrass...a saviour to pick up drivers in distress...a tonic to sunburned red necks...an opiate to neglected farm women...a leader of tractor pulls...a poet for the majesty of salmon.

Try to top that you monosylabic hickseed :)

SBM,

I am beginning to like you more and more every day. I am sure Berry's carries Tournament Drifters which are much more durable and can take a beating on the river.

Bongo,

I think you have rural BC mixed up with Arkansas.

Cat,
I don't fish the Purist much. You're right it is made to catch fishermen, it's too fragile. Does spin real nice though. I usually use a 3 3/4" old Seldex. Takes a beating and keeps on ticking.
