Abu-Garcia Prices
<11596>
Hope this isn't taken as Spam, I wanted to ask the sage and sober tackle hogs on this board what they thought of the prices for Abu-Garcia Reels at this place http://www.tacklecanada.com/itmidx1.htm.
I haven't bought an Abu for years, matter of fact I sold my last 2 last year.
But that 660OC3-LD Lever Drag looks great for downrigging.
Any/all informed comment/info/opinion much appreciated
TIA

Carl, those prices are very good, especially the ABU 7000,and 7500 both these reels are hard to find. The 7000 usually goes for $239 to $250 and the 7500 goes for $275 to 300 if you can find one, Thanks for the link, might buy one of those 7500 myself.

For some reason those reels look like they were custom made, whenever I go to Mikes reel repair he has the same selection of parts on the wall. Most of the cast cassing look to be the older models or replacement parts. They have the squareer looking casing instead of the newer round look. Maybe it's just older stock, either way they are pretty good prices.

The word "elite" can't be used in USA because another maker than abu has the name tied up. As soon as abu was sold to outdoor technologies, then it bcame subject to american law, and a suit was launced to kill elite. Abu Canada may be in touch with Dave, and may not. The mag reels are retro types, made to look old, but with ultra cast design.

Mag reels are all the rage in Florida, Texas, and overseas for surf fishing. Casts of over 800 feet are being done with long rods, and mag reels, in tourney mode. In fishing mode, well over 400 foot casts are commonplace. these tweaked reels have no levelwind. It's been deleted either at the factory, or by conversion bars by various shops, or by buying a factory frame converted to no level wind.

Mag round reels exist, as well, in catalogs like Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops. Round reel describes the palming conventional, current ambassadeur 5000/6500 we have here.

Dave's prices are really good. Too bad he does not have a conventional 7000 red available. But he may be getting them in.

Well Ken you 'tweaked' my interest when you mentioned those long-distance casts so I did some searching, man you aren't kidding!
They are talking about 650ft casts while Striper fishing off the US East Coast!
Of course they are Fisherman so your 400ft estimate carries more weight(!)

For sure, Carl...depends on the rods along with the reels.... the serious surfers are using British-built rods...and depending on how much weight they sling, a 600 footer is do-able. In tourney casting, they go by weights from 2-6 ounces..or thereabouts...up to around 175 grammes whatever that comes back to.. Every year, we get a few Brits up here who play the game back home, and enjoy fly fishing as well, for the steelhead here.

I just checked the price for the Lever Drag in Cabela's catalogue.
Dave has them beat all to rags.
He's just $20 more in C$!!!
So he's coming in at 30% cheaper if my calculations are correct.
A fine price indeed!

Anyone use the Penn 525 MAG Casting Reel? Read about while searching for the Ambassadeur Mag casting reels. Seems like the reels are in direct competition with each other. What do you guys think of the Penn...better than the Ambassadeur? Think they are similarly priced. The only thing I am not crazy about is that you have no line guides on these reels so it has to be done manual...isn't that a big pain? I know it is on centrepins.

I copied this article below from a US chat board:

"I purchased a Penn 525 Mag last week after hearing a great deal of praise concerning this reel from many who excel in the art of surf fishing. I went down to the park and (after a few warm-up casts and fine tuning the mag control and spool pressure knob) I launched a 120 yard cast with only a ten foot rod! Following some advise from the "reelman", I soaked the spool bearings in carb cleaner (Penn tends to overlubricate) and re-lubed them with the "rocket fuel" oil provided with the reel. The next day I was able to launch a 135 yard cast, and casts over 110 yards were almost effortless! This reel was designed for Penn by the greatest casting champion of all time, Neil Mackellow. This reel is the perfect surf casting machine in every detail; lightweight, six bearings, the largest spool lips I have ever seen, a magnetic spool control that realy works, a strong anti-reverse, a better clicker than on the int.955-975, the biggest drags of any reel in it's class, aluminum spool, oversized gearing, and double spring free spool. I can not believe that it costs only $140 !!! This is by far the best casting reel (out of the box) made, how it stands up to the rigors of time though, only time will tell. It outcasts and outperforms my Calcutta 400s and my International 965 by leaps and bounds (literally), but it does not look as nice. I think the WSB, calicos, and butts are in trouble now."
