Sockeye gear

Hi

Wondering if 15 lb test mainline with a 12 lb test leader for fishing sockeye in the Fraser at the scale bar and Herling Island would be sufficient? A buddy of mine has a low capacity spool on his reel, and I thought a few extra yards of 15 lb test mainline would be more important than 100 yds of 20 lb test. Your thoughts?

While we're on the subject, what is the most commonly used hook size for socks (I've heard 1/0) and what lb test is your preferred leader (ultrgreen or something less supple?). Forget about hooking a spring for this question please.

Thanks.

Try getting 30lb fireline as it has the diameter of 12lb mono. The fireline will allow you to feel the bottom alot better than mono which is especially important on the scale bar as it is frequently very windy. I would go with a 20lb leader at least. Not because the sockeye are particularly hard to reel in but more for being able to pull off of snags a lot easier. Otherwise
you will be constantly having to tie up leaders. 100 yards of fireline on your reel is quite enough for sockeye.

a 1/0 hook is fine for sockeye.

I would go with 30 Ibs fireline for the mainline 20 maxima for the leader and a 3/0 gammie for the hook..

Felix hit the nail on the head!
unless you have hundreds of dollars to spend on gear get fireline and some 20 pound maxima leader with some 3/0 gammies!!

Use 15lb Main Maxima and 12lb Maxima leader. Also use a #1 hook. I did this last year and worked like a charm! I find you lose stuff a lot less often if you use a steel leader hooked up to your main leading to your bottem bouncer.

Jamester, you could probably go down to 20 lb fireline but go with the green not black. The green lasts much longer before fraying. 15 lb leader is just right for this fishery and if you want to save on leaders and land more fish, attach a 3- way swivel to your mainline, then a 4 inch piece of 50 lb test mono or 100 lb tufeline, then a attach a regular swivel and leader. Attach your bouncing betty or lead ball to the 3- way and your set. What this does is protect your leader from nicks and frays that is caused by the bouncing betty or lead ball. You'll have way less break offs from springs as well. good luck

Thanks for the info guys.

Caught my first sockeye ever this week. 1/0 hook and 15 lb leader. Not many other fish landed that night, I'm sure your info helped.

Tight lines.
