Wondering if anyone can help me out here. My ABU 6501C stacks line on one side(opposite the handle). It seems to be an intermittent problem. If you look closely you can see the line guide sticking for a couple of turns or so. Is this likely just grit in the works or something more serious? Thanks in advance for any advice. I'd like to try and fix it myself before I hit Mike's Reel Repairs.

Sounds like a pawl deal.... flip the reel over, and observe the cross-points on the worm... clean with a q-tip and light oil if the worm is encrusted with crud....engage the handle, and see if the corners where the 2 points meet at that end of the worm have been gouged or in any way compromised by the pawl's travel. If the worm is ok, then it is a 5 dollar fix to change out the pawl. Undo the keeper at the bottom of the line guide, pluck out the pawl with fingernails if not too crudded in, pocketknife if trapped with crud, install new pawl, lightly hold the pawl with fingertip, and engage crank to line pawl up in groove. Pawl will sit nearly flush..the same as the old one was, not riding high. Do NOT attempt to place the keeper over a high pawl;.. you will destroy the worm. Re-install keeper, and go fishing. If the worm is also damaged, then it is a 20 dollar deal for a new worm and pawl. Hope this helps.

Wow...2 a year..... seems high.....suggest you look for the following wear causes: pull and check the line guide where it rides in the milled slot on the frame cross-member...the line guide needs to be round at the top, not square. If worn square, it tears up the worms real fast, due to the angle of attack of the guide in the slot setting up much friction. The other worm tearer-uppers: grit from borax a la roe, or river silt, ... having the relationship of the line guide and the line out of sync with each other causing extra friction when the guide is one one side of the spool, and the line on the other....and a badly worn worm shroud causing the guide to plow into the shroud surfaces. A line guide and a shroud are less than the cost of a worm and pawl. Mike's Reel out in Abby is a good place to get advice, and parts. The crew out there is always ready to keep you fishing.
