Can I hear the worlds views on types of and amounts of weight for float fishing in the vedder. I've fished with pencil lead both, slipped on to the main line above a swivel and attached off the swivel (breakaway) and I've started seeing guys using 1oz bouncing betty's off a 3 way swivel. What's your opinion.......

Don't make it hard on yourself. I prefer Pencil Lead/Surgical Tubing and if you don't have any tubing, just make the tag end coming off of one of the knots on your swivels a bit longer, take the hollow pencil lead and push the tag end through the hole in the pencil lead and then crimp down on the end the pencil lead.

I used to fish with a guy who was a float fishing wizard. He swore by split shot, smaller near the leader above the swivel, increasing in size up the mainline. Split shot crimped on gently (so as not to weaken the line), about 3" between each shot. Leader only 1-2 feet long. His contention was that this setup kept a gradual curve in the line to just before the hook, increasing sensitivity (little slack line, no hinge effect). He would add enough weight to keep the bait near the bottom, varying it depending on depth and current speed, and/or casting distance required (he used a Silex). It is very similar to the setup that English baitfishers use, but with much more weight due to heavier gear & water. One thing for sure, he was very successful at hooking steelhead in every river he fished: Thompson, Chilliwack , Squamish, Stamp, etc. I rarely saw him get skunked or outfished. If he wanted to quickly switch to bottom bouncing, he would slide all the split shot down to the swivel, clip the mainline above the topmost shot, remove the float, then re-tie the mainline to the swivel, and start fishing again. This whole process would take les than two minutes. Anoter method I saw guides use on the Stamp was to put the splitshot on the leader, and have pre-weighted leaders on a leader card for quick changes after snagging bottom. I figure if guides are using it, it must be effective. Personally, I prefer pencil lead tied to swivel with weaker than mainline mono for bottom bouncing, and splitshot on mainline for float fishing.
