Hi.Does anybody know if this Eon is any good and how wold it compare to
Calcutta TE 400.I hear Culcuttas have some drag problems. Thanks for the
info.

I own 2 Calcuttas, a 250 and a 400 never had any problems with the Drag at all. They have at times seized up on me for no reason at all but Shimano fixed them no charge. The lower priced Shimano-is it the Catala?- is said to be good value for the money. Abu-IMO-has gone downhill for many years now.

Depends which generation Eon you are looking at....they have been recalled twice at least... to fix the level wind deal, and other glitches. I would suggest you avoid the eon, and spend the dollars on the c5 mag reels ambassadeur's doing. The C5's come 5500, and 6500 sizes, and possibly 4500 size.

Where do you get these new C5's?? And about how much are they each for a 6500 and 5500???

Ryan, I suggest you call around for the new C5, I have seen the 5600 C5 at Berry's and Gill's. I think they're priced at around $180. I have not seen any 6500 C5 yet, but heard they are coming soon. It's too bad Abu-Garcia did not make the new C5 with the faster gear ratio of 6.3:1 like the C4. Ken can you explain how the magnetic braking system works on the new C5, is it similar to other abu mag reels? How does the C5 mag compare to more expensive reels such as the Shimano Calais mag, Chronarch mag or new Curado mag? Carlo

The mag control takes the physical place of the line out clicker on the LH side plate. Engaging what *used* to be the clicker in various positions from 1-10 moves the magnetic bank closer or further from the spool. It works. Very well. No more backlashes. (Or at lease minimized). Easier to cast than the anti-backlash option from a few years back. The bearing locations are: IAR (instant anti reverse) roller clutch brg RH side plate for handle, 2 on the spool, and 2 on the level wind. I cannot do a comparison on other makers, as I only have Ambassadeur, Penn, and, Mitchell 301's. There are 4 gear ratios available for the 45/55/6500 reels, and can be ordered easily. I cannot recall the exact ratios from memory, but they are close to 3.8 winch, 4.5, 5.4, and 6.3 If the salt is your game, then you can get a stainless steel gearset. I have a special limited edition of the c5 style...: it has square side plates, like the 55/6500 CS grey reels of a few years back. It is the first orange reel ambassadeur has ever done. It is the Florida Surf Fishing LE. I bought 4, 3 for gifts, and one for me. I especially like the lever drag 7000 series.... and will be buying one in the near future. Also you can check http://wwwabugarcia.com for more on the regular C5's. They also have a lineup of the international reels available. As you see by these links, other parts of the world have different Abu's. Wait till I locate the Japanese web pages for Ambassadeurs.... fancy-schmancy. ;-)

Here are the exact gear ratios for Ambassadeur reels in the smaller sizes: 3.8, 4.7, 5.3, and 6.3.
