Hi all, I've been trying to find "Canadian style" downrigger rods here in the states and I'm not having much luck. One of our local tackle dealers says he can order a 10.6' Lami glass rod designed for a single-action reel but at nearly $200 US that seems a bit steep for something to be cranked in a downrigger. Can anyone offer any links for what I'm looking for? Berry's still doesn't have their online selection of rods up. tks, Bruce

The terms you're using are somewhat confusing. Any Rod can be used on a Downrigger, I think what you're talking about is what we call a Mooching Rod. In any case that's a lotta dough for any-style rod. I know of no Canadian site selling Rods of the type you're after on-line apart from Berry's who as you say are having probs producing a viable on-line catalogue. Why not just give Berry's a call/ask for Len or Mike -both senior staff members/explain your needs and ask for some quotes. They carry a number of different lines and would be happy to help you. If you get the model #'s from them then you can check the specs at the various company sites.

Yup, the "mooching" rod is what I'm after. Surely somebody caters to you guys online aside from Berrys. If not, somebody sure should....

Bruce the money just isn't here. A number of big US retailers have tried the Canadian market for sporting goods and failed/gone home. Canadians are cheap people-especially Sportfishermen. A Guy will drive for half an hour to save $2 on a $30 item-I've seen people do it. The amount of money needed to setup an online store precludes small operators from entering the business and even Berry's-one of the two biggest Tackle Shops in BC-hasn't been able to develop/organise their site properly. Nikka Industries-the other big BC operation-has had an 'under construction' on their site for 2 years-they ain't goin' nowhere. There is a catalogue outfit out of Alberta http://www.thefishinhole.com/ that offers some tackle that might be used for Saltwater but the prices are usurious and the staid old http://www.lebaron.ca/english/index.htm is properly called 'lebummer' because of exceptionally poor service and biblical waiting times for goods. Phoning Berry's is till your best bet.

You may want to talk to peter at fred's custom tackle. Fred has a 1-800 number that may work south of 49, and a good selection of both blanks, and finished rods. They also have a web page.

I used the Fenwick HMX and it was great. You can actually pick them up at the South Terminal at the Airport, for the guys heading up to the northern lodges. Shove a Daiwa single-action on and your set. The rod cost about $180 CAN (+tax) It's rated for 15-30 lb test I think. We used 25# and it work superbly for tyee springs and coho. Just my 2 cents.
