Rod Building

Does anyone on this board build thier own rods? I would like to discuss the spacing formulas for 14 and 15' two handed rods. I primarily fish steelhead on BC's northern rivers and would readily discuss fly patterns and techniques for these beautiful wild steelhead.

Denise; I have a book called " make your own fishing rods " in the book they say for a 12' to 14' rod. Spacing of 10 to 12 inches and as you approach the tip 4 to 6 inch spacing. If your looking for a book and more information go to the library. If you ask they will order any book you need. As for fly patterns I find black with opal tinsel works great. But for steelhead which sit in very shallow water I find a floating line works. Fish the rapids and you will find they are hiding behind the rocks. Good luck!

Marianne,don't you know who Denise Maxwell is?Her and her husband Mike own and run an outfit called Gold n West flyfishers and are some of the premier flyfishers and guides in the province.They're specialty is speyfishing for steelhead.You can become more familiar with them through some of their books and videos,or have a stay at their lodge on the Bulkley.She,I am sure,could discuss any aspect of rod building or spey fishing or any flyfishing that you would care to.They also have their own website,something like speyfish.com.

Your welcome

Dan

P.S CP;what's up?

Hi Dan. I don't think you understand my message. I was answering her post on building a spey rod and how to space the eyes.

Thanks Marianne. You seem to be well informed. Do you build your own two handed rods? Dan seems to be quite the upstart with the two hander in the Squamish area. I am glad to see another woman take up the sport. Women tend to excel in flyfishing especially when exposed to quality equipment and great rivers. Maybe we can share some tips.

Thanks.

Hi Denise; Yes I love to see women fishing too. I fish just about everyday. I enjoy any type of fishing. I have a hard time finding a women partner, because we have to do house work and what ever. I'm usually at the river by myself. I speak German so in the summer time I have a ball with all the German tourists. Some guys have a hard time dealing with a woman on the river, as you must well know. I started fishing in the Squamish area and know the Chekamus well. Now I know the Kitimat river inside and out. In my next life I'm coming back as a man!
Bye keep in touch;
Marianne

I also fish the Cheakamus from time to time,and love makin' new fishin' pals,where do you prefer to fish on the Cheakamus,the canyon or between the bridges or below the bridges.

I have heard the Kitimat is quite a meat fishery. How is the fishing there now? I am winding up here on the Bulkley after another great year. I will try the Kitimat out this spring.

Dan: How has the squamish been holding up? Should be coming down soon.

Hi Denise. Yesterday the fishing was great. Lots of Dollis on the fly. Didn't hit any Coho. Today we went out and couldn't buy a fish. Do you move down south for the winter? I have never fished the Bulkley but have heard great things about it. Give me a call if you come to Kitimat and maybe I can show you the river. Yes it is a meat fishery but if you stay away from the crowd you can have a good time.
