Early Season Fly Colors

Heading up to the Kamloops area this weekend , just wondering what is the color(s) of choice for flys this early ? Thanks !!

Jeff

Depends on the lake. The bugs tend to take on the color of their environment.

Fly colour tends to be related to water and weed colour particular to the lake. Clear lakes with distinctly green weeds tend to have nymphs etc that closely match the weed colour. Darker lakes with dark weeds or with primarly mud bottoms will tends to browns or dark olives or olive browns.

You are best to take a range of colours black, brown green/olive, tan and then hen you get to a new lakes poke around in the shoreline weed and debris to determine the predominant colour of the insect and amphipod life.

Hope this helps.

Leighton's been on and off Corky. Yesterday i had a lot of action on a Charron Emerger (dry with the tail tied as the shuck beneath the surface. Size 10 light grey chronies were coming up and the lake was alive with the fish slurping them from the surface. Guys fishing the pupas were catching fish too. Today's reports were good too. Also try damsels (on the bottom), dragons and especially leeches.

Thanks for that Georgi. Had a good conversation with you on the phone today - thanks again for all the info. If the weather stays good I will stop in mid week to say hi and buy a few patterns - especially interested in that emerger pattern - I have tied something similar called a racoon (with the shuck hanging down). It is a pattern I found in the new book by Phil Rowley - Haven't caught anything on it yet though. Soon I hope :-)

Don't forget to bring a fly or 2 for the contest. And if you're still here Saturday, come and meet Phil in our shop. Bring your book and get it signed.
