I'm heading up to the central coast for some coho fishing. I'd hoped to do some bucktailing while I was there, but I'm somewhat reluctant to use mine as some of them are over thirty years old and I'll be fishing with some rookies who've not used single action reels before. Anyone out there tie their own and can give me some recommendations on hooks, materials etc. it would be much appreciated.

Dewey: Don't know if this will be in time to help you, as the post is undated and down the list a bit. I'm a newby to the forum, but live in the area you are heading to. If you are afraid the flies will not stand up to the abuse of use, re-cementing the heads should take care of the problem. If losing them is your concern, then I would recommend Mustad 34011 to tie on, size of your choosing, but at least a 2. Body/wing can be fur or feather, up to 5 inches long, chartreuse at least in part, and a mylar head/body envelope tied on extending over the hook eye, then folded/slid back over the hook. Cut the mylar a little long, so you have some to fray towards the tail. Coat the mylar with head cement or epoxy for durability. Blue over white is another good combination. Painting gold and black eyes on the head can be of help as well. Cheers Danboy
