Looking for fly patterns

i've been looking for a couple of dragonfly and damsel fly patterns with no luck and was wondering if anyone new of some good ones to win a competition. Either on the net or one you ty thanks Fish4life

Hi Travis! has a searchable database. Good luck

http://www.globalflyfisher.com/patterns/list.html

Travis,
There are two types of flies; ones that catch fish and ones that catch fishermen. Here are tying instructions for a damsel that catches fishermen. Because of the length of tying area on a Tiemco 205BL I use a size 14. For the tail I use 10-15 fibres from hungarian partridge. For the abdomen;
tan antron tarn with chocolate brown antron pulled over as a shellback ribbed with small copper wire. Tie in wingcase of dark brown swiss straw, brown grizzly hackle and tan ice chenille or plastic tinsel. Wrap tinsel to within a quarter inch of eye. Palmer grizzly hackle(three turns)pull wingcase over, wrap the wingcase to the eye. For the eyes you can use beadchain or for better effect use clear silver lined beads on mono with the ends burned. Takes a while to tie but looks extremely buggy. Good luck, Prof.

Prof it seems there are alot of flys for catching fishermen. I've found when it comes to catching fish less is often better.

Thanks Prof for the pattern i'll have to practice it for the weekend. Hey Ryan how old are you? Just wondering if you are in my age class. do you know anyone else entering in the comp?

Gentlemen: If you really want to impress Mr. P talk entomology with him and learn the Damsel and Dragonfly life cycle (order Odonata). Check out the local library for anything by Dave Whitlock, Carl Richards, or Gary Borger, these are Mr. P’s bibles.

I’m not sure whether you are tying aquatics or terrestrials but I would stick to the aquatics. Tell Mr. P you plan on using these patterns to target large coastal cutthroat and Bow River rainbows (something Mr. P is very familiar with). Tie as many gomphus or darner patterns as you can in various sizes shapes and colours. Make sure your patterns have legs (six/3 pairs), eyes, ribbed abdomen, compressed body section and a wing case. Make your patterns as neat and trim as possible, use as thin a tying thread as possible and stick to Tiemco hooks (I think Mr. P is sponsored by them). Talk lots about Sage and tell him you’re friends with Peter Morrison.

Pieces of advice;
§ never put your scissors down;
§ always have your scissors in the ready to cut position (tying hand);
§ keep things simple (as few a wraps as possible);
§ if you snap your thread while tying continue on as if you didn’t miss a beat (don’t get frustrated);
§ ask your teacher to show you an easier and better way; and
§ stay enthused about your sport.
Mr. P is extremely passionate about fishing and he’s always willing to share. Don’t be afraid to ask him a question or two, because as he and I know, some day your pupil will become your teacher.

sounds good Billy I will have to keep that in mind I just learned a few more killer patterns tonight

I'm from the UK. We use damselfly patterns a lot and there are numerous patterns. This is one that might not win any fly tying competitions, but it certainly catches a hell of a lot of fish!

Hook; 10 standard shank- I use Kamasan B175. Leaded.
Tag: No. 11 Globrite floss.
Tail: Olive marabou 2x hook length. 6 strands green Krystalflash over.
Rib: Med. gold oval.
Body: Olive marabou or ostrich herl. Keep it slim.
Hackle: Yellow or golden olive dyed partridge hackle.
Head: No. 11 Globrite.

This one worked well for me at Roche Lake last September, and catches plenty of fish here on both large and small waters.

Good luck

Hey Travis, I won the patch of chocolate brown saddle, but I was hoping that you would leave the set of scissors for me! I won in the damsle category, I was called right after you. It was a fun competiton!

Sounds like you guys had a good time, and congrats on winning some prizes. Keep me informed of when the next comp comes up. I'd be interested in hearing what the next pattern is. I'm going to give Mr P a call right now to see how things went.

cool I really needed the scissors that hackle was prety good quality my friend wanted the scissors to he was the one who took the book I was aslo thinking about taking the hacle if the scissors were gone. I'm thinking of trying to get a fly fishing club in my school it would be a lot of work though but fun. Hey did you know that they have a fishing tournement in june?

Billy the only patterns I thought you used was your Sculpin and the Serpent which was used in conjunction with species Micropterus dolomieui.

If you're looking for seriously good fly patterns,I will let you in on my secret for those big thompson rainbows,that everyone has such a tough time catching.Just take the fuzzy balls off of your Mackinaw jacket and roll them between your fingers,so they look like a fly.Then asfix them to your bear hook and start flyfishing.This can be very effective,but even better is to take the fuzzy balls off of the inside of your underwears and put those on the hook and net those big rainbows as they faint when they get close to your fuzzy flies.Just looking to help.
