Help! I'm spending three weeks in late July and August on Vancouver Island - we're staying in Victoria. Could anyone give me any good tips on where I could do some flyfishing fish for trout on rivers and lakes in the southern half of the island. Any useful suggestions would be very gratefully received. Many thanks

I used to fish alot in lakes of the Cowichan Valley, surrounding Duncan which is located 50 minutes north of Victoria. Check with the staff of Bucky's sporting goods in Duncan to see which areas are producing at that time, what to use and how to get to them. Generally at the height of the summer the higher elevation lakes are your best bet although some of the lower lakes can still produce. You can also hook into some nice Brown Trout still in the upper Cowichan River at that time of year.(a well established gift from the British many years ago) Many of the higher elevation lakes are in active logging areas and are only able to be accessed on the weekend after checking in with security at the main gates but they are usually worth it. Once again check with the local sporting goods store to get maps or directions. I don't live in the area anymore so I don't get to fish it often but it is still one of my favorite places to fish. Hope this helps. Enjoy your trip and post your results when you get back home. P.S.- There is a flyfishing club in the Cowichan Valley whose members could probably be of assistance to you if you can get ahold of any of their numbers somehow. I do not have them unfortunately.
