Fly tying : upside down flies

can anyone tell me why some of the flies that i tie tend to hang upside down (hook point up) when fished.

Hi AL,
Are you by chance using "bead-eyes" on these things? I tied a bunch last year using broken links of bead-chain (the stuff that keeps your sink plug nearby) and I noticed that the weight of this stuff tends to make the flies turn upside-down! This isn't really a problem if you know it's going to happen...just turn the hook upside down in the vise and carry on! It may turn a few heads, but the good part is that your flies then become (more or less) weedless! With the point upwards, you can fish them closer to the bottom without them catching every stray piece of lake weed...think about it!
Also, if you are using lead or copper wire (to make quick-sinking flies) and the wraps are not even, this sort of thing can happen as well.
Good luck!

Al, you may want to try tying a "riffle hitch" knot to your flies. This should cause your flies to ride higher so that the hook section is pointing downwards.

yeah i think it's the weighted flies that have that problem. i did think about that weedless advantage but an upside down dragonfly nymph? that may be a problem. and scott, u are wrong. a riffle hitch makes the fly ride sideways.
so...how to get weighted flies to ride the right way up.

When your tying in weighted eyes, it is best to tie in the eyes under the hook shank, rather than up top. If you do not want them to turn upside down. This can however, take away from your hook gap slightly, so you may want to use short shank hooks in a slightly larger size than normal to compinsate.

Either that or...
Instead of wrapping your weight around the hook, try placing it along the length as one piece (on the bottom side) but again, this affects your gap.

i agree with mac . i experienced the upside down thing after tying some hares ear nymphs on 2312 hooks . tying on a piece of lead wire to the underside of the hook extending not quite opposite the hook point righted the fly in the water nicely without losing too much gap .in my case this only seemed to happen with the 2312 humped shank hooks .nice hooks but i think i'll be restocking with 200r's.
