I was told by two different fly shops to use very bright flies for winter Steehead.
I thought the Black G.P. was a winter steelhead fly?? Is there something I should know?
Thanks,

The Black GP can be used in winter when the water is running fairly clear. I was using one today infact. However, since winter steelheading often involves fishing more turbid water, those guys were probably suggesting a brighter fly for low visibility conditions. In turbid water a bright fly with plenty of motion is often more effective. |

I believe that Art Lingren who modified the original british G.P prawn fly to it's blackderivation wrote an article for b.c. outdoors years ago(can't remember which issue) about adapting flies to light conditions/water conditions. The black G.P. falls into the somber fly category and as such can be used from summer to winter run.It is tied from a #2-5/0 and that pretty much covers the gamut of river conditions from low and clear to blown and tannic. |
