Went by the Harrison River today. Checked out the previous reports about all the dead sockeye salmon in the river. Was at Kilby and there is still alot of dead floating fish in the river. Can't believe that all those fish died of natural causes. Fishing was slow as I spoke to a couple fishermen coming back into the boat launch. |

Tough day at scale bar today. Hauled in a spring on my 3rd cast and got a sockeye 2 casts later so I thought it was going to be another cake walk. But then it took me another 2 hours to get my seconds sockeye. All the time it was blowing something fierce and raining (sideways). So pretty slow for Sockeye today that's for sure. |

Hey Guys....ladies. The action on this psection has been great, expecially concerning the sockeye returns.....there is enough for everyone so relax and even advise (new fishers) to the sport..!! This has been excellent fishing for many including sport fishers, that runs like this need to be conserved. I ask that fishers like yourself keep an look out for unjust actions and even provide us with footage..... You all should log in to our forum and read up on a families latest experience going out fishing on a fav bank.....general discussions. And....the fight to remove fish farms for the next three runs of Sockeye is in motion for all of you to have a voice on how the feds make their next move very soon.......visit Alex Mortons blog to take some action against the obvious ... I've heard nothing but 'fish oup everywhere up and down the province. This particular stock is a strong and hearty breed, we can enjoy annual returns, if we all pull together... I've been off the west coast, sand heads and up rivver, have seen the sets sit for more than 12 hours and still hear catches taking less than an hour. As sport fishers, lets promote insight, action and responsibili for our fishery, its our greatest assett...!! FishOn..tight lines.! |

The river is absolutely filled with sockeye right now. At scale bar today I had a fish almost every cast or at the very least multiple hits. Lost a spring but 10 seconds later I had a sockeye on before I could reel in. It's insane. Some real big sockeye right now too. Caught a few that were almost as big as some springs. A few red ones showing up so they are starting to get ripe. Most are still quite fresh. Feel sorry for some of the guys there struggling to even get 2 sockeye. If you don't have the proper equipment to cast out far you are wasting your time at scale! A Walmart rod and crappy reel is NOT going to cut it down there. |

Went out yesterday to the Scale Bar. Plenty of people still but not quite as crowded as when the sockeye season started. The fishing was slow but managed to get my two. No springs were caught when I was there. With the river level dropping and the scent of dead fish around the bar, it moving the fish further out. You'll need to get your gear out fairly far to hook into the fish. |

its nr. hope on hwy 7 park near the truck weigh scale ,watch out for no parking signs and follow other fishermen down to the river about 20 mins walk. dont go without chest waders med heavy duty rod and reel. 3-4 oz bettys.12ft leader+. its not a good place for novice fishermen. or you can head back to vancouver and try camp hope, no waders 1oz and you dont need to cast as far.more snags there.also seabird is farther down ,just look for park cars on hwy 7 between aggazzi bridge and hope. |

I was at scale gong show yesterday afternoon. Lots of people as usual even though it was a scorcher. The river is absolutely full of sockeye. Pretty much every cast I was getting a hit. You gotta cast way out as the previous poster said. That's pretty much par for the course at scale though. Never saw any springs. I have yet to see a spring taken at scale this year. Next time I go will be just for a spring. I usually get at least one every year. I always use 3oz but maybe I'll give 4oz a try. The further out the better for springs at scale. |

Spent that last week out at the scales and its not like it used to be. Alot of amateurs who let their lines drift out to long and snag all the others down the line: people who show up at 3 am (me) to get a spot only have it needled in as soon as i catch one or need to re-tie; alot of non- English speaking people who dont understand the etiquette; and those who cast arbitrarily- and leave their gear and line all over - the place is getting pretty littered. There should be a sign saying take out what you take in but one would think this is common sense. If u can get your line out far enough using a 4 oz betty u can get your two no problem. Just dont expect peaceful hamonious fishing. Three fights broke out where I expected a physical fight on shore. |

Harrison River

the dead sockeye in the Harrison have been attributed to chlorine from the Hotel, seal bombs and water that is far too warm in the past. Pick one that you can live with as fisheries will never come to a conclusion. (as in the past) |

In a strange way all those dead fish might be a good sign. It might be indicative of the size of the run this year. A larger run is going to produce a lot more dead ones but it doesn't necessarily change the percentage of fish that die compared with the size of the run. I dunno, food for thought. |

Fished the Pegleg this morning, it was busy but I wouldn't call it a zoo, fishing was fair, the three of us got our fish in about 2 hours, by noon the bar was almost deserted, everyone had their fish, but I couldn't believe all the dead fish we saw on the Harison river, between the Fraser river and the boat launch at Killby, we must have seen 2 dozen dead sokeye floating down the Harrison at about 1:30 this afternoon, I telephoned DFO when I got home about this, but couldn't talk to anyone, so just left a measage. |

Good to hear you had a good day Sounder, especially after you decided to move away from the usual haunts. I've done my fair share of fishing at at those places but that was back when I had more time and less responsibility so I could get out more often. These days I have a demanding job, a house that needs constant upkeep, and a wife so my time on the water is limited these days. So when I do get the opportunity to go I steer well clear of the zoos that form out there come salmon season. I am also lucky enough to have made some decent money from selling my last house and purchased a boat which makes life much better on the water. Keeping with the theme of FISHING REPORT though, I have been geeting out after work lately on the lower Fraser for sturgeon thanks to the long days. I've done pretty well as of late with around 20 fish caught in the 4 or 5 times I have been out with the largest a little over 5 feet long and over #100. Ooolies are still the ticket as I caught 3 yesterday in about an hour but I also scooped up a floater sockeye out of the water and have cut that up to use as stink bait. I'm gonna give that a shot as I hear it works very well. Does anyone know of any decent sturgeon hols between the Port Mann and Fort Langley? I know most people don't like to divulge this sort of information but if you don't mind it's much appreciated. |

We got our limit and left and drove up around the Hope area away from Scale bar and he morons that are their. Got a nice 30 pound Spring and drove home! These people that cast out their lines and snag yours everytime should not be fishing. Seriously people if you dont know how to fish then DONT!!!!!!! |

I don't know why any respectable angler even goes to scale bar or any other of the other "gong shows" for that matter. The fish are throughout the river and with a little effort there are lots of areas on the river that you can get away from the crowds and catch your limit. As it is though, if you are a meat fisherman and only looking to put fish in your freezer then unfortunately you'll have to put up with the crowds. When you head out the door with the goal of fishing at scale bar then you have to know going in that there are going to be issues with other anglers simply because of the sheer numbers of people that go out there. Personally I like to make a day of it when I get the chance to go out fishing. Get up early and come back late after a full day of exploring, hiking and fishing. With a little luck I come back with my 2 fish, the same as everybody else, but unlike the "gong showers", a lot less complaining about a day that is supposed to be enjoyable. |

Tony, Try driving back to Kelowna on the Coquhalla autobahn. There is never radar so people drive unbelievable speeds. I am going 120km/h and people are passing me like I am standing still. It's actually only a bit farther to Kelowna from Hope than going the other way to Vancouver. Double lane all the way and better road than Hwy 1. Very busy this time of year though. Scale bar gong show was the usual zoo today. Kids running around, dogs barking. You bring in a fish and you have 3 lines tangled with yours. You try land it and you are dodging clueless kids and old ladies who can barely speak english. Then once you bonk it you have 2 dfo guys asking for your license then another dfo guy asking for your statistics. Saw them write up a few people for no license. They also took away their fish. Then you have people who need to stop for a smoke and a beer 3 times walking up the hill and probably never walked that far in a year. A total gong show. Somewhat slower for sockeye today. They seemed a bit smaller on average as well but still lot's coming in and fair number are good size. No springs seen. I pity anyone planning to go down there this weekend. It's gonna be crazy. |

The Seine boats will be scooping from Sunday to Thursday so even if there are a lot of socks in the river now there won't be as long as those guys are out there so it's gonna be quite slow until next Saturday I would say. Does not matter if they are not at the mouth blocking it off, they will be scooping a lot of the ones headed that way. The Gillnetters are only out for 3 hours so that's not gonna be too bad. |

Hi Peter, Go for small pink hootchies (mp 15- kind of a bubblegum colour)and others , short leader 18- 24 inches , Hot spot flasher, some say dark green on the outer rim ,and foil . I use good ole red. I think the thing with flashers is to use lots, many add one to cannonball, or use those daisy chain things which look like a bunch of small flashers in sequence- hooked on the cannonball ( 49.00) Sockeye like to school, so multiple flashers is the key- fish all four rods on downriggers and start shallow early in the morning and work deeper as morning progresses. I would go to Nikka Industries in Richmond get a few of the mp hootchies, mp15, 16 etc.... ask the guys for exact ones . Slow troll. I should note that if it keeps open, it will be better in a week or two when Adams fish show up. The early Stewart run is finishing right now, so dont be discouraged if it isnt that hot. I saw one roll yesterday and it was a smaller one which is usually a Stewart fish. When fishing, use four different small hootchies all of which have subtle differences and switch to all four the same one once you get a fish on one of them.We also pull about a third of the strands off the hootchie. Mid August should be good fishing if you hang in there and if the run stays open. In regards to the other fellows question, I am not really sure about fishing tidal Fraser from the shore, I have never done it- sorry. |

Fished off the mouth Monday afternoon tide change and got a nice spring. Fished all day yesterday and nada! In regards to the netting in the river, I have boated the lower Fraser from Mcdonald beach to the mouth for 30 years and sometimes the nets are just a little too much. It makes it difficult to navigate a boat through them all. Common sense says having nets all the way to Hope and beyond is bound to have an impact. Nothing gets through.People are dreaming or are in complete denial if they think it isnt that bad. |

I wouldn't bet on a sockeye opening. It was only last year they said the stock was near extinction. Politically too difficult to open it I think. They lose a lot of credibility with the indians too as they were 'asking' the indians to not fish last year too. Of course the indians just ignore them as usual and you could still buy sockeye from them out of the back of a van. |

So what's the deal with the Fraser opening for sockeye? I heard that it may open this week? How long will it be open for if they do decide to open it.. |

Yes Herrling has been blocked off since last year. You can work your way around the blocks walking but that is it. I believe they did it to eliminate the damage that was being done by bikers and atvs. quote "Closure happened because of damage to Kruger's private tree plantations and to riparian areas that border the Fraser River." |

Hit Grassy Friday night with my girls, released 4-socks up close ( kept socks in the the water for the release, worked just fine. Fished Saturday (Grassy, Peg-Leg, Jesperson's) one sockeye & lot's of native netting. No-Springs, how was it up above? By the way what in the name of DFO happened to Peg Leg & Jespersons? Last year Spaghetti recieved a back channel & screwed up that fishing spot, This year Jespersons gets a huge portion of it removed via gravel removal, Peg Leg is screwed for walk-in & drive-in fisherman. Is this a man made, man designed way of cutting down the success of fisherman on what used to be popular bars? |

On my way back from vacation, I have noticed huge cement blocks across the road before the RR tracks preventing people to drive through the tunnel. Can anyone confirm? |

JULY 21-24, 2010 GROUND FISHING OFF BAJO REEF AND OFFSHORE IS STEADY, IF YOU CAN GET OUT THERE. CONSTANT WINDS AFTER 11AM AND 2MTR SWELLS WITH MODERATE CHOP. SALMON FISHING IS SLOW AT THE REEF. INSIDE THE SOUND, MORNING BITE IS YOUR BEST CHANCE, BUT SPOTTY AND SLOW. EVEN THE GUIDES COMPLAINING. UNTIL THE WEATHER CHANGES AND SOME RAIN CUES THE FISH TO COME IN I DON'T SEE MUCH CHANGE. DECENT FISHING WAS REPORTED OFF FERER ISLAND (CLOSER TO TASHIS) OFFSHORE, BUT AGAIN SLOPPY CONDITIONS AND A LONG RUN TO GET THERE. LODGE WE WERE AT THE BOARD SHOWED THE AVERAGE SPRING AT 13-15LBS AND ONLY 3 OVER 21 DURING OUR STAY. I WOULD ESTIMATE CATCH RATE AT ABOUT 15% OF THE BOATS OUT THERE BRINGING THEM HOME. |

lloydster, Your best bet is Hope or Chilliwack camping areas. I'm in Kelowna and often drive down for the day to Hope coming back with a cooler of fresh fish for the freezer. I usually don't bother till later on when the water goes down and the circus atmosphere dies off a bit. I would give it another couple weeks and depends a lot on if they open it at all for keepers. One thing. avoid scale bar in hope at the very beginning or very end of an opening. That place attracts a lot of unfriendly ornery types for some reason and there is very limited space on the bar when the rush is on. |

The sockeye are coming in with good numbers ,would expect to open after 6th aug. as the main runs are summer and late summer.as for springs there seems to be more over the 77cm slot then under,so i will wait untill the 30th then the slot is gone.you can expect lots of native food fishery now as they get first shot. |

Fished Friday all day & 1/2 day on Saturday. Touched 3 -springs at the hook, 1 came to the boat, was kissed & released to spawn; I hope. It was 1-3/4" over size. Seemed the river is about 4-0' higher than normal, so the fish that are in the river could easily be running wherever, I ran a couple back channels to see how deep the water is running. 10' feet in some spots. Dennis, if you read this I gave your kid's a ride back to Agassiz & forgot to swap phone numbers. Let me know if that offer is still open. |
Sea Bird/laidlaw

So I went ahead and decided to give it a try on Saturday and Sunday..anyway the fishing sucked! Not one landed at seabird and to top it off the dfo were waiting at the end of the trail right before the beach ...so if you forgot your license you'd have to hike back down the trail and through that river ..luckily I had brought mine because sometimes I leave it in the car..after about two hours of NOTHING I went up the road until I saw cars pulled over .. When I got there-there was a fish being played and about 4 caught after that...so all in all wasn't too bad.. I enjoy watching ppl catch them as well as catching them so I had fun... The only thing that bothers me is these stubborn fisherman that don't know the rules an get mad/in your face when you tell them the HAVE to throw the fish back..next time I'm not even going to say anything, I'm just going to report them..these fisherman are really stupid too because I see them all the time at different spots yet they continue to dump in there own yard so to speak.. |

Springer I passed Laidlaw on the way back and saw about 5 vehicles park there. I assume that the slough is cross-able but the water level is still quite high. |

Scale Bar
By: Steelman

Went out this morning to the scale bar to enjoy the first opening on the Fraser River for springs. It was a beautiful morning. Around forty fishermen plying to get their first spring. It was awfully slow though. Saw a totally of four springs landed and only one or two kept that were legal size. There were some sockeye caught and released as well. Witnessed one spring that was caught, dragged on the rock and grabbed through the gills before the fisherman was told that the fish was too big and not keepable. He was informed about the maximum size limit and he vainly tried to revive the fish but it was bleeding and a goner. He promptly drop the fish in the river. Spoiled the whole morning for everyone around that witnessed this event. To top this off, the fisherman who had caught and killed this fish when he was leaving the decided to stop and also pickup and keep this fish. Another fisherman next to me decided to call the DFO and report him. |

Fished Alberni Inlet last Saturday morning at first light. 40-60' on Pink mini squirts, slow troll with flashers stacked on the downriggers, limited in an hour. Get there early, the fishing is better. Fished Beechey Head/Aldridge Point Sunday morning. Two Springs (one white 17lbs, one red 18lbs) at 40 & 60' on Purp Haze anchovy, UV flashers, 6' leaders. Also caught incidentally 2 Sockeye off Beechey Head as well, which were released. |
