Zeballos End of Season Fishing Report
It’s always exciting when you can look back at a season and can say it was great success. The summer season around Zeballos and much of the west coast turned out to be some of the best salmon fishing we have experienced in a few years. Chinook returns along the west coast were expected to be similar to last year and in my opinion they were definitely exceeded. We had great salmon fishing right from the very start. With the first group in June and the last group in September taking home their limits of salmon and halibut - it makes you realize how special our fishery really is.
Coho returns were predicted to be the best in over a decade and from what we have seen so far this forecast looks correct. Consistent numbers of these feisty fighters were around all summer. With the new four fish per day limit it gave us that extra opportunity if the weather was bad or we had a quiet day on the springs. The size average throughout the season was not huge, but the last week we did start to see some fish up to 15lbs. As of now the Coho fishing around Victoria is fantastic and there some big fish being caught. We will have some great fall fishing around Victoria for these silver bullets and with the retention of wild fish after October first it gives us a two fish per day limit.
Halibut and bottom fishing as always was exceptional around Zeballos and Esperanza. Ling Cod, Yellow Eye (Snapper), Black Bass and Vermillion topped up the fish boxes this season at our new spot “The Bucket”. We fished this new area with great success for large halibut as well. We did at times find it hard to get our small halibut at this spot, but I didn’t hear any complaints when guests were consistently catching keeper fish in the 40-60lb range and on certain days releasing up to a few fish over the slot size.

It looks as though the new halibut regulations were a success. As of July 31 we were only half way through our quota. In the next couple of weeks we should have confirmation on exactly how long the season will go, but at this point it looks like we should be able to fish right up to the New Year. I’ll keep everyone posted! Victoria has always had a great fall halibut fishery, so if you missed out on some of the awesome summer action now’s the time to drop me a line and check out some of the fall tides.

Looking ahead to the 2014 summer season, I am predicting it to be a busy one. We had such a great summer this year that 50% of departing guests booked their next great adventure already. With a few new groups in the schedule as well, a lot of the prime time slots are filling up. We offer a first class oceanfront resort, great food, great company, and at a price that won’t break the bank. If I haven’t spoken with you in a while, drop me a line to make sure you don’t miss out on this world class fishery - how can you not!
