We were in northern BC to pursue the wily Chinook salmon, and this day we decided to fish a deep fissure called The Crack. When we arrived, dozens of eagles were taking turns diving on the largest herring ball I have ever seen. Within a minute or two we were in the middle of the and immediately my rod tip started bouncing. I immediately grabbed the rod and the Chinook on the other end took off like a cannon shot. It took the longest run of any fish I have ever hooked and for several minutes it was a stand off until I finally saw him in the crest of a swell. My heart stood still for a moment. The salmon looked huge, with that beautiful red tinge of the Chinook I had always longed to hook. The battle was epic, and when our guide finally heaved the fish onto the boat we just stood there gaping at the biggest Chinook I had ever seen. When we returned to the Salmon Seeker everybody was just as excited as we were. When the scale hit 46 pounds I couldn’t believe it.
