Catch the Dream
by Martin Paish

"I can't believe it, I'm finally here."

I can still remember the first time I first glimpsed the Salmon Seeker in legendary Kano Inlet. Our floatplane swooped down through the rugged mountains and into the sheltered waters where the ship is moored. Even though it was over 10 years ago, and I’ve been fortunate enough to visit the Salmon Seeker many times since, that first sense of anticipation and excitement will remain with me forever, and is repeated each time I return.

Many anglers have a “bucket list” of their most sought after species and destinations. As a lifelong angler I have mine. When I think of Bonefish I think of Long Island, Sailfish is Quepos, Steelhead is the Skeena, and for salmon and halibut it’s got to be Kano Inlet. If only once, every salmon and halibut enthusiast should reward themselves with a visit to this special piece of coastal wilderness.
What is it about the Salmon Seeker and its incredible Kano Inlet fishing grounds that make it so special? To me, it’s summed up in one phrase: “The most productive salmon and halibut fishing in the world – bar none.”

Being located right on the doorstep of what is without a doubt the greatest salmon migration route on the planet puts the Seeker's guests in a truly enviable position. No running 20 miles offshore. You’re right on “the highway.” Virtually every run of Chinook salmon destined for Central and Southern BC, Washington and Oregon passes by here on its way home. Double headers are pretty much an hourly event, double digit mornings are expected, and average size is over 20 lbs. There are a heck of a lot of fish here.

True wilderness is becoming a rare commodity and the Seeker is smack dab in the middle of one of the most remote coastlines anywhere. You just don’t see other boats out here. That, combined with the close proximity to the edge of the continental shelf, makes this THE place to be if you’re after a barn door halibut.

The lack of competition means that the big halibut have a chance to get bigger, and the rich productive deep waters of the edge of the shelf, enriched by abyssal upwelling mixing with coastal runoff, ensure the kind of food supply that generates truly gargantuan sizes. The lodge record is well over 300 lbs., and many fish over 200 lbs. are either landed or released each season. One hundred pounders are common. Grab the fighting belt and hang on. Any questions?
What really sets the Seeker apart from other operations is her experienced, professional guide team. They’re included in the price for every angler. No need to pay for an “upgrade.” Even as an experienced angler there’s a lot to like about the guided experience.

I’ve found that my ability to appreciate my surroundings and truly focus on watching that rod tip is greatly enhanced by having a guide. I don’t have to worry about the weather, the tide change, or whether or not we’re in the right place. Guides can manage the big water of the Pacific safely and skillfully. And their ability to predict exactly where and when the peak bite is going to come on borders on the uncanny. Let’s face it, it’s a busy world out there and when I take the time to go on vacation I want to truly relax and enjoy the experience. Guides help you do that.
If you’re a seasoned angler looking to experience the global peak of salmon and halibut fishing, or are simply wanting to try fishing in a truly wilderness environment, then the Salmon Seeker is an experience you should definitely try.

You’ve earned it, now go out and get it!
