Are todays Children getting enough of the Great Outdoors?
Kis FishingRecently, Canada-wide studies by children's advocates have shown that today's children are at risk because of the frantic pace of modern life in the latter part of this century. It also appears that British Columbia's problems are not unique; from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritime provinces, the issues are identical across the country.

In today's fast-paced, plastic world, the new ultra-modern conveniences of present-day have not given families more leisure time. In fact, the opposite is true. Now, adults are working harder than ever before and sadly, in many cases, both parents are forced to work just to make ends meet. As a result, many children are not getting the all-important attention they typically need and deserve. Today, with societies failing social nets and a multitude of negative influences and impacts such as: drugs, alcohol, crime, violence, teenage gangs, prostitution and peer pressure -- it's easy too see how our children are easily tempted into following the wrong and often deadly paths in life.

It is becoming painfully obvious that the family--the foundation of our society--is being destroyed. The grim statistics show family breakdowns are linked directly to an enormous increase in teen suicides, violent youth crimes, homicides and drug abuse. Studies have convincingly shown that the key factor in determining the evolution of content, healthy, balanced human beings is based on a loving and secure bond with the parents.

Now, more than ever before, it is becoming increasingly clear that parental guardianship and guidance stands alone as a particularly effective instrument in the deterrence of concluding problems. What can possibly be done to reverse the frightening trends of the ever increasing numbers of dysfunctional homes where there's emotional and physical abuse?

What can we do for the children with low self-esteem, that are, or may be vulnerable to peer pressure and the wrongfully romanticized life of crime and violence? The United States has played a leading role in providing a helping hand, equal opportunities and guidance to any child even remotely interested in outdoor activities.

"Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs," has been a highly successful, youth orientated program initiated and driven by caring sportsmen/women, just like you and I. This well organized front of professional and amateur outdoor people is teaching school-aged children the meaningful values of the great outdoors and its associated pursuits. Perhaps, what's needed for British Columbia's children is just such a fishing/outdoors related program?
