TKO’ing Big Springs
Over the years I have been in search of a lure that could consistently catch larger Chinook salmon. There have been a few over the years that have done me quite well. It sure seems now like I have finally found a lure that could prove to be the one that delivers.

Last August we had a very good day fishing Chinook in Port Alberni, we landed 4 of 6, the biggest being 24lbs. I stopped in at my favorite fishing store that week, Pacific Net and Twine (Parksville) and talked to my buddy Rob. We got into the discussion of large Chinook and Rob told me about the new TKO spoon he had brought in and how he landed one very large Chinook well over 30 lbs. and lost another the previous weekend in Port Alberni. He gave me a Pink and Silver TKO spoon and told me to give it a try on my next trip. We headed to Port the next weekend and started to troll early and began the day using our regular gear. Over the next three hours we landed 2 and lost one other. This biggest was 20 lbs. Most anglers were not having much luck so our day was pretty good. Mid-morning I decided to try the Pink and Silver TKO spoon. We just happened to be in the same area Rob had caught that large Chinook the previous week. I was trolling the spoon at 65 feet behind a red flasher in 140 feet of water at 2.4 knots with 42 inch leader. After making a turn into a small bay my son yelled out “fish on”. The TKO had been hammered and the reel was screaming out line. I quickly grabbed the rod and immediately realized this was a big fish as it peeled out 140 feet of line in seconds and went straight to the bottom. It then turned and bolted all the way to the surface. I did my best to catch up to this hog. Just as I caught up to it, the Chinook rolled at the surface (we could see this was a massive fish) and dove deep again. Just then I felt it break loose. It was gone. I reeled in my line to find the fish ripped the hook right off the lure. Although disappointed we missed what we felt was easily a 30-40lb monster I knew Rob was right when he said this lure catches big fish. It was our last weekend of fishing, so I was really looking forwards to 2013 and trying these TKO spoons again.

The 2013 season has just started and we have made two trips out to the east side of Vancouver Island. Both evenings were very productive. We have kept 5 nice springs so far, the biggest being 15lbs, and have carefully released well over 20 smaller undersized springs (Remember to pinch the barbs on your hooks!!!). Last week I stopped in to see Rob and he asked if I had tried the TKO yet. I had not and he recommended I give it a try.

On Saturday morning we hit the water for the 3rd time this year and made the trip over to Young Point on the south side of Lasqueti Island. We arrived around 6 am and started trolling at 85 feet and 135 feet. The one rod had a 5 inch Coyote spoon and the other had the TKO Black and Glow spoon that Rob had recommended. After landing and releasing 4 small undersize springs, two on each rod, we decided to bring the gear up the 65 and 75 feet. We were trolling at 2.4 -2.8 knots using green flashers and 5 foot leaders. I suddenly heard a big thud and turned to see the TKO spoon had just been smacked by a large Chinook. I grabbed the rod and realized quickly the fish was gone. But it was a good sign. A short time later we noticed bait showing up on the sounder and my son just mentioned he also plotted two big fish at 70 feet. Just then I heard another big thud and turned to see the TKO had another big fish on. This time the reel was screaming out line. I grabbed the rod and the fight was on. I knew this was a good fish. It gave a tremendous fight and 10 minutes later we had a big Chinook in the cooler. Although this was not over 30lbs it was very close and for this time of year, it was a big fish. We caught 1 legal size spring on a watermelon Coyote, 11 lbs. Both the TKO and Coyotes had their fair share of under sized Chinooks as well, which we carefully released. The TKO produced one more nice spring at 18lbs and we had another bigger Chinook hit but we lost that one after a short fight.
The TKO is proving so far in the limited time I have used it, that it may be that lure I have been looking for. It seems to catch the big fish. If you get a chance, try the TKO spoon. You won’t be disappointed.
