Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada August 27th FN0737-Salmon: Fraser River Sockeye Update - August 27 - Areas 11 to 29 - Update The Fraser River Panel met today to review stock assessment data on the Fraser River sockeye runs, plan fisheries, and discuss sockeye migration conditions in the Fraser River watershed. Test fishing data collected over the past several days indicates continued strong migration of Fraser sockeye through Johnstone Straits. DNA analyses indicate that the stock composition of Fraser sockeye in the Areas 12 and 20 marine approach routes to the Fraser River are currently less than 1% Early Summer-run, 5-6% Summer-run, and 93-94% Late-run sockeye. The diversion rate of Fraser sockeye through Johnstone Strait is currently estimated to be approximately 95%. The migration of sockeye past Mission and Hells Gate continues to be strong over the past several days. The estimated total catch of Fraser sockeye to-date is 5,700,000 fish. Total escapement past Mission is 6,400,000 for a total accounted to date of 12,100,000 fish. The marine migration of Early Summer-run sockeye is essentially complete; the current run size estimate of 3,200,000 Early Summer-run sockeye was increased to 3,700,000 fish. The 50% marine migration timing of Early Summer-run sockeye through Area 20 is estimated to be August 9. The estimated escapement of Early Summer-run sockeye past Mission through August 26 is 2,473,000 fish. The marine migration of Summer-run sockeye has been decreasing in recent days. At the meeting today, the Panel approved a run size increase from 4,500,000 Summer-run sockeye to 4,800,000. The 50% marine migration timing of Summer-run sockeye through Area 20 is August 15. The estimated escapement of Summer-run sockeye past Mission through August 26 is 2,471,000 fish. Late-run sockeye are the dominant stock group in marine approach areas and in addition there are large numbers of Late-run sockeye delaying in the lower Strait of Georgia prior to entering the Fraser River. This migration pattern is more consistent with historical migrations which we had not seen for a few years. At the meeting today the Panel approved an increase to Shuswap/Weaver Late-run sockeye from 16 million to 20 million with an August 24 timing date through Area 20. At the meeting today run size estimate of 1 million Harrison sockeye was increased to 1.2 million with a marine timing through Area 20 of August 11th. The estimated escapement of Late-run sockeye past Mission through August 26 is 1,839,000 fish. Birkenhead run size is unchanged at 241,000. On August 26 the discharge of the Fraser River at Hope was 2,070 cms, which is 32% below average for this date. The temperature of the Fraser River at Qualark Creek on August 26 was 17.8 0C, which is 1.0 0C above average for this date. At the meeting today, after reviewing environmental and stock assessment information, the Panel changed the management adjustment factor for Early Summer-run sockeye from 0.38 to 0.36 and for Summer-run sockeye a management adjustment factor from 0.15. Management adjustments are employed to help achieve spawning escapement targets for Fraser River sockeye. The following fisheries are planned/ongoing: The Area B Seine fishery remains open until further notice with new vessel quota levels in portions of Area 12 and 13 from 06:00 hours to 21:00 hours daily. Area 20 will close on Friday, August 27th, Friday at 21:00 hours as scheduled. Please refer to the specific Fishery notices for more details. The Area H Troll fishery remains open until further notice in portions of Management Areas 12, 13, 18 and 29 with new vessel quota levels. Please refer to the specific Fishery Notices for further details. The Area D Gill Net fishery is currently open until 08:00 hours Sunday, August 29 at which time they will close. The Area D Gill Net fishery will re-open on Monday August 30 at 18:00 hours to Thursday September 2 at 08:00 hours in portions of Areas 12 and 13. Area 11 will not re-open at this time. Please refer to the specific Fishery Notices for more details. The Area E Gill Net fishery will open for 24 hours on Monday August 30 from 10:00 hours to Tuesday August 31 at 10:00 hours in portions of Area 29. A second opening is scheduled for 12 hours on Wednesday Sept 1st from 07:00 hours to 19:00 hours. Please refer to the specific Fishery notices for more details. Recreational fishing is open for sockeye retention in south coast marine areas and in the Fraser River. Please refer to the specific Fishery Notices for further details. First Nation fisheries vary by areas with opportunities in marine and Fraser River area; consult with local DFO offices for openings. The next Fraser River Panel meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, August 31st. A further update will be provided on this date.
