Joined: Feb 2006 The bugger and spratley are definite top 4, I would add the rolled muddler and green shrimp followed closely by the chironomid (smaller varieties can be a challenge to tie). My top pick, however, would be the very versatile burgundy leech with which I have caught trout, bass, coho, and just about anything that swims. It is up there with the muddler and spratley as the must have fly in the box.

Joined: May 2008 Sandman refers to maroon leach. Hard to argue with that. I was the bull goose this year for 2-3 hours and was using a maroon leach the whole time. Also blood red nymph was hitting like crazy. All that changed one day later and I couldn't buy a fish on the tackle that worked so well the day before. Humility, it's a sobbering equalizer. Light green nymph with same colour marabou and small bit of brass wire rib is also popular. Not much to it but often the simplest patterns are the most productive.
