Search:		Fly fishing the Estuary (Amundson Thompson Chaser Fly Rod Review) With the warm weather upon us it’s the time of year I like to get out to one of my favorite lakes with my son and fly fish for some trout. The fishing is usually very good at this time of year. We headed out to the lake just after dinner last week and arrived at our spot just before 8pm. The lake was beautiful with a slight breeze. I very excited this day as I was fishing for the first time with the Amundson Thompson Chaser 8ft, #4 wt., four piece fly rod. It is an absolutely beautiful graphite rod with a metallic dark green pearl finish, high quality cork grip and a machine cut aluminum reel seat that has a double lock system. The first thing you notice is how feather light this rod is. After a few casts you instantly experience the quality of this fast action rod and how quickly it loads and its precise power transfer that generates high line speed. This came in very handy as the wind was gusty and the Thompson Chaser performed remarkably well, delivering incredible accuracy even in these conditions. We had waded into the river and walked out into the estuary toward the lake drop off, stopping on a spot where the bottom came up to about a foot leaving us about 15 – 20 feet from where the estuary drops off into the lake. It was this drop off where we targeted our casts and where the trout cruise around looking for food. My fly of choice was a small Elk Hair Caddis fly with a maroon body. My son was using a small Tom Thumb pattern. Both flies were very productive this day. With the breeze moving left to right I would cast the slightly into the wind and about 10-15 feet past the drop off. I would use the wind and ripple to help move the fly along the edge of the drop off and would slowly retrieve the fly and bring it slowly closer to drop off edge. After a few casts I saw a trout rise about 30 feet out. The Thompson Chaser 4wt performed perfectly as I easily got the fly out against the breeze and hit the spot dead on. A little pull on the fly line and I had my first trout on. The fish fought admirably but was no match. I quickly released the fish and continued fishing the drop off. The Amundson Thompson Chaser Fly Rod has all the sensitivity someone would look for in a 4 weight rod. Many of the trout this evening would lightly take the fly which made the rods sensitivity to feel even the slightest touch of the fly a huge advantage in setting the hook. For the next hour the action was steady and we soon had landed and released 16 trout between myself and my son. It was a fantastic evening. It was made even more enjoyable with the Amundson Thompson Chaser 4 wt rod. I would highly recommend it to anyone. Being an 8ft, #4wt, four piece rod, it is perfect for traveling to those remote lakes or streams. In calm or breezy conditions it performs extremely well.
