Well scott I cought one 7lbs steel and two coho last week on the Cap.I fish the middle
section in between the cable pool and the #1 bridge in the fast watter (riffles and
pockets)with a sinktip egg pattern and a 5 foot lead of 12lbs test.So dont think if you
cant see fish, means there is no fish. Conserve your waters and tight lines.

I seem to be the first human up at Hut Lake this year. Had to walk the whole way from
Levette, lots of snow. Still 75% ice-covered and no sign of any fish activity at all. This
is surprising, right? Or is Hut a dead lake?

Dave, I'm sure there are coho in the river, but I'm sure they're not as significant as the
main run. I think if you're going to fish for coho, you might as well wait until the
regular non mutant coho come in that are more then 7 pounds. that might explain me not
seeing anything, but still, if there are these coho in the cap, they are all 100 percent
still silver, no way any of them could be colored, at least not yet. I surveyed a lot of
the river, it was very clear. I could see no traces of silver, or change in reflection in
the river. Like I said, your chances of catching a coho in the cap now, are about the same
as your chances of catching a steelhead. Not very well. At this point in time, until I
hear reports of good size coho coming in and an amount of them that I can actually go to
the river and not get skunked day in and day out, a trip to the cap even though its about
45 minutes closer to my house isn't nearly as good as the drive to the vedder to go
steelheading. Maybe my values in fishing are different then you, but hey, its my opinion,
and you have yours. tight lines, and best of luck to anyoen who does decide to catch coho,
spool up your 4 pound line and 2 pound leader, all 800 yards on your 6500 abu garcias or
400 calcuttas. Scott.

Listen Scott, coho have been known to enter the Cap as early as March, and I can damn near
guarantee that they are in there right now. Just because you didn't see any does not mean
there aren't any, these fish are small, 2-3 lb fish. Contrary to you r belief, it is not
bogus.

Yeah guys, I heard the same thing, that there are coho in the cap. So me and my buddy went
up to the cap river this past sunday to check it out. We went to the cable pool and this
guy was there and he had no luck. We went to the hatchery, and there were no coho there at
all. So we drove down to under the no.1 highway bridge, a very popular pool for many
salmon, and where the clear part of the river was I coudln't see any fish at all. If there
are coho in the river, they are definitely silver, ain't no colored this early if they are
there. So we drove down to the next bridge which was some apartment complex bridge down by
main street in north van/west van and we looked into the river and it was clear and we
surveyed a lot of the river with our polarized glasses and couldnt' see any fish AT ALL. I
think if coho are there, we would have seen them. We stayed there for at least 15 minutes
looking for them. so anyways, we then drove down to ambleside near the mall to see them,
and we still couldn't see any nor could we see any anglers who had caught anything. Right
now, I think this coho thing is possibly bogus. If there are coho in the cap, there are
definitely a lot less coho in the cap then steelhead, and how many steelhead are in the
cap, close to most of our iq's, close to zero. I'll give it a week until I actually hear
real reports of coho being caught, and not some guy who can't tell the difference between
a dolly varden and a coho nail a fish and tell all this buddies that there are coho in the
cap. tight lines, Scott.

With high tide at 2:00 in the afternoon on Sunday, I thought I'd give the Stave a try for
cutts, but it was an afternoon of casting practice into the wind. Only one or two cutts
showed themselves- a couple of boils at the current seam along the boat launch bay and one
in the pool just off the end of the spawning channel. A lot of guys were there looking for
steelhead but apparently only a spawning pair in the back channel were all anyone saw. No
one else was doing any catching, so I scooted over to my friends house in Pitt Meadows and
we went up to the Alouette at 203rd. St. as there were reports of action there the past
week. I think it was my second or third cast right at the spot where we walked down off
the dike at the road and bang! Fish on. Nice cutt of about 15 inches. There were
intermittent boils of larger fish chasing the schools of fry that were patrolling the
shores (tons of fry!) and it was a matter of walking along, looking for the boils or signs
of fry surfacing as they were being chased and casting a small green-backed silver bodied
minnow pattern fly out there and give it a couple strips. It usually felt like you may
have hooked bottom, but then when "bottom" shook and ran, and the flash of a
good fish was seen, hey, great fun. Not the most scenic fishery with people walking dogs,
joggers and the like passing by and asking how the fishing was, but in two hours we had
enough action to satisfy us with the bonus being a nice rainbow of about 17 inches (maybe
a juvenile steelhead?) and a selection of cutts from 12 to 18 inches. Tough back-casting
along the bank though, and the wind was still a problem. Cheers.

I'm going to the vedder again hopefully this thursday with work buddies once again, gonna
take advantage of the last days of baitcasting before red spring rage on the vedder.
Anyways, fort apache is the spot on the upper section of the vedder about 1 km down from
the hatchery. Its the place where you'll usualy see a whole bunch of people parking there
trucks/cars on the side of the road and accross the street from it, and you have to walk
about 150-200 meteres through a small little creek and to the river. The actual spot fort
apache is this pool that the fish like to sit in before they go up a bit of white water.
Its a great spot for red springs in the summer, and is very well known for a variety of
bank maggots, etc, that sit there and just nail springs all day, and get there at like 5
in the morning and stay there til 3 in the afternoon. Something else I can do to help you
describe this spot, um, when you park your car, there is a garbage can that says
"bank maggots steelhead derby" on it before you go down the trail to the river.
Other then that, thats fort apache. Very popular spot in the upper river. I end up going
to this spot almost everytime I go steelheading. Tight lines people. I'm gonna be using my
usual corkies on thursday, with big leaders. Scott.

Phesant Tail Nymph... Nothing. I guess the fish were all hanging out near the bottom. I
only saw 1 fish rise all day. Huge thanks to Dave and the two other guys in the cartopper

Thanks for the report, Scott, but I didn't see it before I left to go fishing today.
Anyway, I fished the lower end (I think in the same hole that Scott calls the meat hole)
and hooked a wild buck (about 12 lbs.), but I lost it at my feet...crap!!! Other than
that, nothing! I got it on a 4" bubble gum-coloured worm. The water is still good,
about 2 feet visibility but quite high. For those there last Sunday, about 1 foot lower
than Sunday. Hey, Scott, where's this Apache Hole you keep talking about?

Hey ppl, and steely. Sorry, I haven't been on the net since my trip to the vedder, but
I'll give you my report. Went to the vedder on thursday. The river was not at its usual
lowest level, but still fairly low, and very very clear.you put your polarized glasses on,
and you can see everything. Anyways, i'll tell you about my day. Me and my work buddy went
to ft. apache. Fished there for a good 2 hours, moving up and down the river, trying
different colors, different leaders, covering the river fairly well..and we didn't catch
anything or get any bites at all. I talked to some guys there casting by the cliff and
they said they hadn't had any bites or caught anything. So me and my buddy say pack up all
our crap and head for the hatchery. At the hatchery, we looked into the water,(the actual
hatchery, this isn't some spot) and we saw AT LEAST, 50 or more steelheaed spawning in a
huge school. They were all colored, but in fairly strong condition. I have never seen that
many coho spawning in there, yet alone steelhead. It was amazing, so me and my buddy move
down about 100 meteres from the hatchery to the boundary (the confluence of the vedder and
sleese creek) and fish there. there were some guys there, they said they had like one bite
total or something, but they didn't really catch anything. So we said, hey, might as well
try it. So we're casting, and we move down a bit to where the deepper pool is at the spot
(where the beach gets rockier) and the shade is on the water, not the glaring sun, my
buddy casts in, boom, 8 pound steelhead on the line, he fights it for a while, and
eventually tires it out to the point that hes almost pulling it in, and it turns on its
side and that left the barbless hook in easy position to be pulled out, and my buddy just
yanked it outta its mouth. so he lost it, but it was a hatchery male about 8, maybe 9
pounds. Tough fighter too considering it was colored and on the way to spawn. Anyways so
we went to mcdicks for some mcflurrys, and went down tot he lower river to fish "the
meat hole" for a bit. Now normally this spot is just outstanding for steelhead
apparently. We went there and the river was low, which is perfect for the fish there, but
we talked to some guys there and they said they hadn't even seen any fish or had anything
on. So we fished there, nothing. To make a long story short, on thursday the vedder sucked
for steelhead. The run has died down quite a bit. I dont mean to fill you in on our whole
day steely, but I'll tell you a few tricks, and this might be the reason why my buddy had
more sucess then most. heres some tricks if you plan on having at least some success on
the vedder at this time of year. a) fish waters that are in shade, or if not in shade,
near pools. The fish can see the sun and dont like it. If its faster water, fish the white
stuff, as the white stuff prevents the fish from seeing the sun. I looked into the water
and couldn't see anything anywhere else, but the places away from the sun seem to work
best I think. b) Use longer longer leaders, from 16 inches (min) to 2 feet (max) Steelhead
are sitting on the bottom, and will look up and see your offerings. If it is too short a
leader, it wont look natural enough in the current and they will pick it up. c) use
smaller offerings. dont use big worms, the fish ain't stupid. Use corkies/small offerings
of yarn. thats all you need. This is all I have to say, but to make it short, the river
has died down substantially, and just hope that another small burst of steelhead surge up
the river before fly fishign only season begins. Tight lines, Scott.

be reveiled, nor can the methods I used be reveiled, but I didn't catch anything the 1 hour
I was there, but I do know that carp fishing is picking up. This type of fishing requires
a lot of patience and concentration, as you have to leave your rod and just watch it, as
these fish are very smart and can sense the smallest vibrations, even from yoru fishing
line moving a mm in the water. Anything will spook them. But during the right day and time
of year, you'll slay them. to the vedder tommorrow! Tight lines, Scott.

The ice came off Dragon Lake the evening of Sunday Apr.18th, on the north end of the lake,
people were fishing the perimeter areas that were open on Saturday in a variety of craft
including bellyboats. It appeared that the favoured method was dead-drifting chiromonmids,
catch details are unavailable at this time. High winds on Monday may turn the lake over
which could slow the fishing in very short order. If this is the case, it should not last
for more than 2-3 weeks. More info will be posted as it becomes available.

Went up to red slough at the north end of Pitt Lake on Sunday and although we didn't hit
it at an ideal time, there was some action. We pushed our way into the backwaters to the
deep back channels, past the moss and mud enshrouded sailboat run aground on the bank,
deep into the mossy bayou they call "the red slough". We arrived on a falling
tide (not ideal) but the depth sounder showed us to be in an 18 to 20 foot deep channel
and cruising fish could be detected about four feet down. The water was a bit murky, maybe
three feet visibility, so we tied on flashy attractor flies to start. Using a purple egg
sucking leech, with a few strands of mylar flash tied into it, got me a sharp tug on the
third cast, and a sliver bright coastal cutthroat rolled and splashed to the surface.
About 15 inches of wild cutt popped off the barbless hook just as I got it to the boat.
Fifteen minutes later another one, even bigger, but this time I got it to hand. The action
was steady for a couple of hours before noon, with good hits and a fish to hand every 15
minutes or so. We managed to land a beautiful 18 inch cutt for photos and also got a
post-spawn male that was as colourful as a spring morning, all orangey-gold, iridiscent
coppery-rose sides and bright red slashes under his jaw. We had to skeddadle to meet some
time constraints, but I understand that the best fishing is on a rising tide, and a
shallow draft boat is a must! Jet boat won't work due to the heavy weeds, and an electric
trolling motor won't pull you through the shallower sections to get in there, so it's out
of the boat and into the muck to physically walk it through. A bit of an effort, but the
rewards are worth it.

Cody,I agree. I went fishing about two weeks ago on the veddar, and I fished the same spot
pretty much the whole day (the upper veddar by the hatchery) and the spot I went to, older
guys before nailed 7 steelhead all day, and this wasn't slower pools, this water was
slightly faster. All my friends have caught their steelhead in faster waters, faster then
fort apache (the pool there). I pretie my sets, and I use about maxima 10 pound leader,
about a little over a foot long, with a small black swivel, a little bit of wool caught
inside my improved my clinch knought, and a corkie. About 2 weeks ago on the Veddar, the
fishign was primo, apparently its died down a bit, but I think in about a week, it'll go
nuts again and another session of steelhead mania will begin. I just need another fishing
trip to get rid of all my steelhead sets on my leader board (i have 5 left) so I can start
tying my spring sets with stronger leader line and different knoughts. Tight lines.

selective, and if you think a smaller steelhead of around 6-12 pounds will bite a worm,
you're lucky. Worms are productive, but in clear river, not as productive, I think
corkies, or just yarn flys or a combo of the two is the best. My friends have caught all
their steelhead on corkies/flys, and I caught my lone steelhead this year on a corkie.
Later in season, the fish become very selective. Theres only one thing I dont like about
the corkie, and thats that despite the fact it floats, naturally like an egg probaby would
in the current, is that its a hard service, once a steelhead gets it in its mouth, it will
spit it out very shortly. Thats why you have to have your rod in a position where you can
feel everything, the lead bounce, the bites, everything so you can snap back very quickly.

well the steelheading has been pretty good once again in the Vedder/chilliwack
seystem, hate to say but only been out three times this "steel" season and landed
one 10lb "egg wagon" and lost four others. Most pepole I talk to say they also
have had pretty moderate action aswell.Summer is right around the cornner as well as the
mighty "carp"season.fly + carp = rush,I always look forward to the end of spring
when these gohst's of most local lakes, ponds and slougs finsh there spawning as these
mystry fish are almost imposible to (hunt) fish for during winter and spring spawning
periods.I've caught many big fish but a 7lbs carp is more of a challage than a 20lbs
spring in my book, and a 25 to 30 carp is not unusuall. If you ever have a chance to fight
one of these over grown goldfish ill understand what I mean. good fishing and tight lines.

I was one of the skunked Dallas wrote about. Fished both Sunday and Monday without a hit.
I even switched to a #12 Carey, same as Dallas used and did not get even a whif. There was
a decent chironomid hatch going for a while, but I could not get a rise. Oh well, it was a
beautiful day Sunday, so I can't complain too much. P.S. Dallas, I can only assume you
were the gent in the Ducks Bag pontoon, as that was THE only fish caught. :-)

Hi everyone...Just got back from Sayres L. The fishing is generally slow right now. I
managed to get an 11 incher on a Carey Special. Not bad considering everyone else I spoke
with got skunked. Fishing should pick up in the next couple of weeks, the water is still
VERY cold. Good Luck and Tight Lines!!

cold. Best before 10:00am. Fish are moving. Several 2-3 lbers caught on water-boat men and
shrimp. Snowed here today but supposed to clear for Sunday and Monday.

Fished Elk Lake in Victoria this mourning. The lake is in the middle of turning over.
Looks like at least another week till it cleans up. Lots of chironomids in a green to
black. Had a couple of light hits but no hook ups. In FLYFISHING ONLY wates there cannot
be any floats or external sinkers on the line when fishing. Any type of rod can be used.
it looks like you might be out of luck Jim. Just give Prov. Fish and Wildlife a call at
582-5200 in Surrey.

Ian,the river is closed as of today for baitcasting until july 1st. (red spring/summer run
steelhead season). It kinda sucks but wutever, but right now, most of the fish are
swimming downstream from their spawn, as a lot of them are really red in their markings
probably indicating they've already spawned. They're also really week to fight, and need
the oceans food. My buddy nailed a 10 pounder and brought it in, in like 2 minutes.
Anyways, until red spring season (can't wait!) tight lines.
