About three weeks ago i went to the chehailis river with a couple of buddys , it was pouring like crazy , the river was running high and mad. We did realy great for the morning bite and banged on a few clean coho ,(wild).Well being soaked to the bone and the hands waterlogged i banged on a white spring, had to have been thirty pounds there abouts. The spring stood its ground for a good five minutes or so, then sha bang , the spring srung into the air , said hello and ka zaam down river she or he went. I tried to slow it down but burnt the thumb. So then i cranked the drag just to snap the line, but to no avail. Then the worst part happened , every anglers worst fear . With one big last lunge the spring took my rod and reel rite out of my freaken hands and down river she went! MAN! was i choked. The sring won!. Borax and wet hands don't mix. Any ways if anyone happened to find a rod and reel at low water on the chehailis over the last few weeks be sure to drop me a note. (sure!). Its an 11' KGX91 Diawa Kevlar Grafite rod with an Abu 6500c level wind reel. I realy can't afford to buy a new set , so It would be realy nice to get it back. Thats if the fish didn't chew it up and spit it out ha ha ha !. I had it for alot of years and fished alot of water with that rod. It will be sadly missed.1998 was a year to remember thats for sure. Tight Lines Ya'll.

Fished the Vedder today.(Dec.27) Water conditions not as good as last week. Due to the heavy rain & snow melt the water from clay banks downstream was just barely fishable. I did manage to luck out and got a nice 11 lbs. hatch.

On Xmas day I flicked a fly around in the side channels of the Stave. Got one nice cuttie on my first cast on an EggSucking Leech, but nothing shakin after that. The water had dropped about a foot from the days previous, and there were still coho present in the channel flopping about.

The Night on the River Shortened and changed by Catch and Release 'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the slough Not a steelie was stirring, not even a coho; The lines were all set by the river with care, In hopes that the King Salmon soon would be there; The fishermen were nestled all snug in chest waders, While visions of bright-silvers danced by their leaders; And mammas in her kitchens, ready for the fish, Had sharpened her knife, to make that special dish, When out on the river there arose such a clatter, The men sprang to the bank to see it jump from the water. Away to the rods they flew in a pack, Tore open the drag and took up the slack. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below, When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But the mightiest Chinook I've seen this year. With a tussle and a jump, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it hooked my "Deadly Dick", More rapid than eagles in the moonlight it shone, And as it whistled in, I shouted, "Fish On". Quickly reeling to match its awesome speed, Remembering only the small poundage of my lead, In a twinkling of a momment the opposite direction it flew, Released my drag and prayed a little too. And then, in a twinkling, I heard in a thundering clap The line had stretched and it broke in a snap As I lowered my head, and was turning around, The great silver fish came with a bound. It sprang in the water to my temptation, Suddenly I knew this was good, there'd be another generation. Amazingly the King exclaimed as it swam out of sight "HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-FIGHT!"

Fished the Chilliwack/Vedder on Sunday and it was damn cold, nearly froze my rear end off. Hooked one Steelhead 1/2 mile up from Crossing, but got away. Most other guys who braved the cold were reporting no fish. I guess the extreme cold weather slows fish activity.

Went out to the Vedder on Sunday, water level was much lower than anticipated and quite clear. Caught no fish, not even a bite! I am new to this salmon fishing game, can anyone tell me when I should expect the next big run of coho or steelhead or whatever tends to enter that river next. Much appreciated!

The Cowichan is swollen and running fast. Lots of chum on the lower river(Vimmy Pool to Virgin Run. Some coho mixed in with them. Not only is the river dirty but there is nobody fishing it in the numbers compared to last year. Coho are scarce. The drift set up with #4 metric's are the ticket and also, day glow Crocks. The best river on the Island right now is the Stamp. Lots of Coho.
Tightlines Tom...

My daughter, Sabrina (11) and I scouted the river this morning and found; a) MUCH less rain than we left at home in Langley b) The water levels are still high and, while clearing, the visibility is poor. We checked out our favorite spot near the Vedder campground but found the dry riverbed of 2 weeks ago flooded. Drove to a spot upstream of the Sardis bridge and cast into a channel to no avail. Saw some big ole springs and some dogs thrashing around but no fish hooked much less landed.

Braved gale force winds and torrential rains today and made my way out to the Vedder River. Sure enough, only a few people, but even less fish. It's still dirty, although the level is way down compared to last weekend. I caught one Chum on pink wool, no one else reported getting anything. I then took the long way home via the Stave River. I was told some Coho jacks were caught earlier today, I caught a couple more Chums. My wife calls me the "dog catcher" around the house now. I should probably ditch the pink wool, and buy some green, or something... Just for interest, the price of gas, on Hwy. 10 through Langley, was back down to 34.9/lt. today.

Field day at the Vedder last Saturday! Yes, the river was swollen and fast running but I played some still waters where the river forked. Caught and released chums, jacks, and springs, mostly fresh, on green wool! Don't let the conditions deter you, as the fish are still around. Fish on!

Few fish, lots of anglers and apparently lots of stale, wimpy fish. NOTE: A $10.70 Class Waters license is obligatory for resident anglers. Apparently a BC conservation officer was dinging lots of folks with $100 fines. [I am sure that most did not know or forgot.]
Irony: the feds only ding you $50 if you drag a fish up on the beach, step on it and then kick it back into the water. But I guess this fits the current scenario of a cash-strapped province, spending rare nickel to play politics or cater to very narrow special interest groups. cheers, Erik Poole epoole@sfu.ca

Spent the day at the Vedder today. As I only moved to BC this summer, I had only been to the Vedder once before, about two weeks ago. Today it was much higher, and muddier. I would call it flodded judging by all the trees floating past (and tons of other junk). But because everyone seems to feel that the water has been low, it might just be back to normal levels, I really wouldn't know. It was dirty, visibility only inches. I caught a Coho, about 5 or 6 lbs, and very dark (purple sides, hooked jaw, but definately a coho, as I looked it up in a book after I released it. I really am new to this area!). Not totally sure what a "clean" fish would look like, but figured this was past worth keeping. I was using pink wool behind a pink spin/glow. Saw some other fish caught but they were on the far side of the pool at the end of Lickman (sp?) Rd. The water was slower inside the bend. I hope this helps, these reports have been extremely valuable for a newcomer like me. And if anyone living in Richmond wants to ever share gas or driving to various rivers, e-mail me.

Went fishing......I mean driving today, only to find all rivers blown out big time ( except Stave which is dam controlled). Nicomen Slough, Chehalis/Harrison and Vedder all raging torrents of muddy water and debris. It may be Sunday at best before the rivers are worthwhile and more rain is coming. Some people were catching dark coho up top at the Chilliwack as well as lots of chum.

Just spent 10 days on the mighty Thompson. We did fairly well compared to most other anglers. The fish are there but not in the big numbers expected from the small commercial effort this fall. I believe that this should be of concern to fisheries. River is low and clear and well suited to the fly guys as most drifts are very slow. Bank conditions (ie: people) were some of the worst I've ever seen. More guys fishing than fish in the water. Won't say what we used (everyone has their secret lures), but it worked. Anyone venturing up there should be prepared to share the water with a few others. Respect the anglers who are in the water first and start your fishing
above them and follow behind them as they work down through the pool. On the 6th of November, a guy got hit by a train as he was walking down the tracks and was very seriously hurt (locals say he was the first person in recent memory to survive a train tangle).
Rumour has it he had been up till 4 in the morning the night before and had too many sodas still in his system when he set out for his morning fishing at about 8:00. Please respect the power of the trains and their speed. A train travelling at 70 k/mh has an incredible vacuum effect and can pull you in while you walk along side them.

Squamish River is great for chums right now. This week was the first time I fished there and it's a much better chum fishery than Stave. The chums are much fresher, some of them are actually silver! There are lots of coho jacks around (catch and release only) but didn't catch any because we were too busy fighting chums.

What a beautiful day fishing up on the Harrison on Saturday, Nov. 7th. Counted at least 50 to 60 eagles milling around, screeching and otherwise enjoying the fine feed and warm sunlight, mobs of unruly seagulls, flights of ducks whistling past while sharp splashy slaps of huge Chinooks sounded like someone throwing boulders in the water. Surrounded by rolling, porpoising fish of all kinds, we cast our flies in search of the wary Coho. The water is the lowest I've ever seen, with the water level about a foot below the end of concrete at the boat launch ramp at Kilby. The shallows at the top of the bay towards the Chehalis estuary area is a huge desolate desert of sun-baked gravel bars and sand traps. Mounds of ripening spawned out salmon littered the banks and bars, and some of the Chinook were just huge! Two corpses we saw must have been close to 60-65 pounds, the tails were measured at over a foot wide. Just friggin' awesome. Anyway, yeah, where was I, fishing, right...We were targetting the Coho and thus were casting small tinsel minnow patterns, and on my third cast and drift into a slow deep spot off the end of a riffle, my short strips were interrupted by a solid tug and I set the hook on a darkening Coho that proceeded to go aerial and take me down to the backing on my 9 wt. fly rod. Broke off on me as I tried to tail him. I was using a yellow-orange crystal bullet fly, and then switched to an epoxy minnow pattern whereupon a large fresh Chum grabbed it and did the purple bass-boat thing across the river, spray flying in his wake. The rest of the day was more of the same, about ten casts and drifts then a hook-up on mostly Chum, one good 25-30 lb Chinook and just the one Coho first thing in the morning. Only saw about a half dozen others who had boated upriver around us, so it was virtually deserted, lots of room to cast, play fish and run down the banks trying to get line back on some wild Chum. Cheers.

Fished the Capilano this morning (Saturday). Conditions were just perfect due to the rain we had a few days ago. The water level was just perfect. Lots of cohos around. Hooked and released five in the fast water. Fished with float and green, pink wool. Green wool seemed to work better. Lots of HUGE springs swimming around. People were bottom bouncing off the cliff at Cable Pool with green wool and it worked very well. Saw two big ass male springs fighting over a female, what else is new... Remember, it's catch and release only for cohos right now, and you can only keep springs under 62cm long. Fished the lower portion (tidal) of Fraser yestarday, no luck, didn't even see fish. Water was fairly dirty.

Friday. It was a beautiful day at the river, although the rain didn't do much except stir the bottom of the lower river slightly. Same story as the beginning of the week, mostly old stock. Saw a few springs taken, fairly clean. Hooked a sockeye?( spawner red as they come )and saw three more 4kms. down Tamahai bridge. I could not believe it. Fished the upper river and hooked a real dark wild coho, released it, and spotted a few more moving up Ranger run. Hooked more dogs and springs. Excellent day for catch and release.

The report is a little late but I fished the Chelhalis just below the hatchery on Saturday. I caught and released 3 silver bright coho in the 4-5 pound range. 2 of them were caught on a #6 hook and a tiny piece of dark red wool and the other was caught on the fly using a purple woolly bugger. my friend hooked a bright coho around 8-9 pounds on a large crocodile spoon but he didn't land it.

The saltwater portion of the Fraser River opened last Sunday and we were out at the River Road bar in Richmond fishing the North Arm. Not much action, saw some small jacks jumping occasionally. I've been told that the reason of Capilano & Burrard Inlet closures is that they are having a bad fall run of coho. You can still fish for springs in the Cap but just gotta release those cohos. Remember, catch & release of coho in the Fraser also. There are still some chums around the lower Fraser. I'll post a report once I catch some...

I fished the Stave yestarday afternoon, and it was not crowded at all. Lots of dead chums, but there were still some fairly fresh ones around. I kept one myself which was actually freshest fish I've seen this year. The green wool was working better than pink. I didn't see any cohos caught. The hatchery people were out collecting the coho earlier in the afternoon. One note, please don't drag the salmon up the bank when landing them. Why? Two reasons: Respect the fish, and if you are caught by the DFO, there is a fine for not properly releasing the fish. Another important notice, just found out on the DFO Fraser River Division website: From October 31st
until March 31st, sportfishing for coho is closed in the Burrard Inlet (including the mouth of Capilano) and the non-tidal portion of Capilano River. Does anyone know why they decided to close it down?

I've taken my family to the Stave a few times and depending on how crowded it is, it could be a good time. There is a nice spawning channel where you can see the salmon doing the dance close up, lots of eagles and a nice trail along the east side of the river between the back channel creek and the main river. If you are heading from the east to the west, you want to turn right at the road that goes north just past the gas stations on the Lougheed, main paved road, can't miss it, with signs leading you to "BC hydro rec. sites" along the lower Stave and Hayward Lake. There is a parking lot up the road about 4-5km that is on a bluff overlooking a big back-eddy and the spawning channel, with the main lower Stave dam just upstream. Picnic tables and an outhouse are there as well. Cheers

For my birthday, my girlfriend kidnapped me from San Francisco and told me I was going on a fishing trip (she's a keeper). I found out at the airport that we would be going to Vancouver and that she had already talked to some guides in the area. On short notice, Harry Penner agreed to take me fishing on the Harrison River, where he planned to target the first run of coho salmon. On Friday, October 16, 1998, I drove two hours east of Vancouver and met Harry just south of the Highway 7 bridge. We headed upriver to the confluence of the Chehalis and Harrison Rivers. This was my first time fishing in Canada, and I grew excited as I saw large fish jumping to both sides of the boat. Harry said they were chum salmon ("dogs" was the exact term) and we probably would catch a few as the river was full of them. I saw my first ever Bald Eagles, which was noteworthy because very few Americans have seen their national bird in the wild. Our first stop was just north of the Chehalis where we found some slower water that looked promising. Using sinking lines and a minnow pattern, we cast to about 15 meters perpendicular to the shore and retrieved the fly in short, quick bursts. I took a few minutes to get used to casting this far because in California I was accustomed to short roll casts on much smaller streams. Harry quickly hooked up with a chum salmon, which I had the pleasure of fighting and losing after a 10 minute fight. We next headed to some holes on the Chehalis, a 15 minute walk in shallow water from the main course of the Harrison. Harry tried his usual spots along the undercut banks but not one fish took our flies. He commented that the cohos did not appear to have arrived there yet, but were likely to in the following days. We boated upstream again and passed some fisherman trying to land a huge fish (which turned out to be a sturgeon as we discovered on our way back). Almost every hole we fished we hooked into a chum salmon. On fly rods, these fish put up a good, steady fight. We noticed a large Chinook salmon (approximately 50 pounds) on the river bottom, prematurely dead as Harry surmised from its fresh appearance. We caught a few more chum salmon through the morning, and Harry managed to coax a small, hatchery coho salmon (approximately 2 pounds) to shore before releasing it. Most of the chum salmon we caught looked spent, and many more were dead or dying in the shallows. Even so, I thought that the 4 hours of fishing was enjoyable, and I would definitely come back.
