Get the fly rod out, it's full steam ahead on our lakes! Spectacle lake has
recently thawed and is showing good surface activity. Thetis lake is producing
well, as is Langford and Kemp out near Sooke. Spider lake near Qualicum Bay has
shown some nice rainbows over the last month, and the bass should start soon
with the warmer weather. That is, unless it's going to snow again! My favorite
lake, a tiny little thing that I call "Golden Pond", has been steady
over the last two weeks with cutthroat up to 35 cm. It's a south Island lake,
and like so many others. Try a light olive WB or a stone fly nymph, or go for
the dry fly on those warm afternoons. The Cowichan has been low and slow, and
while those steelies still refuse my fly, the trout seem eager. Don't forget to
renew your licence!

Ahhhhh, just one of those days. The first one was a hatch buck, 12 pounds, i let
it go. That was at 10. Hit one at 2, about a 12 pound doe, lost it. My buddies
were on me like flies to stink. Then i hit a 8 pound wild doe. My buddy
proceeded to pluck a 12 pound snatch doe. next fish was a 3 pound dollie. 6
oclock landed a screamin 14 pound wild doeski. Hit my old faithful spot for last
light and hooked a beauty doe around 12, fought awesome, 5 minute battle, had
her head on the beach, buddy had his hands on it, and PINK, out goes the #1
gammi. The fish rolled around between my pal and the shore, but it was a long
day and he was awfully BURNT OUT so thats one lucky doe that will make some beak
happy tomorrow. work sucks.

Reefer nails a beautiful hatchery doe on peach/white wool. Weighed in at
15lbs,13oz at Fred's. 1 roll of pictures and a 1/2 pack of rollies later and Big
Reefer is cookin up a swell dinner. Tight Lines and Good Luck.

Date: 27-Mar-01
Comments:
Greetings all, hope everyone is having a excellent spring. Fishing in the
Sasamat lake has been consitently productive, the stocked trout catches are
still quite good. Generally the rainbows are between 25cm to 30cm long, and the
odd cutthroats can also be caught. Best time to fish is during dawn and dusk,
you can see many rises. For bait anglers, shrimp is the ideal bait to use. Fish
under the float, depth at around 1.5m. One useful tip is to be mobile, keep
moving your float, small movement of the shrimps on the surface can often cause
fish to bite. For float size, use a long light one instead of a round heavy
ones, the optimal weight size to balance with the float is only 1g or 2g. Fish
light, with 4 or 6lb test line, or even less.

We'll fellas the season is getting started. I hooked into a beauty winter

Had seen a seal pass through a couple times obviously taking its share of fish.
Had better luck about a month ago catching sea-run cutthroats, anywhere from 16
1/2" to 18 1/2", about 8 of them (7 were hatchery)within a two week
period. Does anyone know how long these sea-runs stick around?

We fished yester day off of the log booms just above the mission bridge. We
caught and released 15 small sturgeon raging in size from 2 feet to 5 feet. The
bite was on as soon as our lines hit the water,It was like this for 3 hours then
the bite just stopped and nothing,My buddy said that when this happens there is
usually a bigger fish that has moved in to the hole to feed and it chased all
ythe little ones away,Well he was right,His rod jerked violently and nearly went
for a swim.Dan set the hook and the fight was on.After an hjour tug of war and
numerous jumps we were both begining to realize that this fish might not come
in.After two hours a passing boat offered to help chase it down,We hopped in and
gave chase,Four and a half hours later we got the prehistoric monster to the
boat, This fish was atleast 10 feet long and weighed in at more than 700
pounds. Thanks pete, without youre help we would not have landed this fish from
shore. I think we owe you some cold beer.By the way the sturgeon were biting on
dew worms. good luck all

lower down until about 8 am. While I did'nt hook anthing on the Spey, my buddy
Big Spin n glo managed to hook two BIG Chehalis fish, one around 13 lb's which
he lost and antoher approx. 35 inch (we held him up to the rod and them measured
where he was on my Big Spin n Glo's Rod, est. 15-16 pounds) Buck which he
landed. That is a big Chehalis fish! Bigger than anything else we saw hooked
and/or landed the whole day. Roe/RoeBags seemed to be amongst one of the biggest
producers mind you the 15 pounder I just talked about came at the Easter Seal on
his first cast with a Big Chartreuse/orange Spin n glo bottom bounced. Water was
up a good foot, maybe more and flowing pretty good. Still fairly wadable, but be
careful. River is still clear as well, not blown at all. Could still be in good
shape tommorrow, if the precip keeps up up river. Good luck if you get out, Big

Headed over to Barkley Sound to get into some better nook action than what we've
had locally. Hooked into about 18 feeder springs. Six were keepers ranging from
8-18 ibs and some other large ones got the long line release. All fish were
caught deep at 195 feet in water around 240 feet deep using chovies and a dummy
flasher on 1 downrigger. (nothing like dropping a manual downrigger to 195 feet
and either having the release go because it was set too tight or some small fish
took a nip and popped it-better than a work out at the gym) Fish were found only
when we found the bait and we only found the bait in one place out of many.
Stomachs showed either pink krill or large herring as the feed. Many were
completely empty. Suspect the herring haven't totally moved in yet. Weather was
great for WCVI. Calm wind, warm, and mixed sun.

river.... lets see a little more respect from everyone). Anyone interested in
helping organize feel free to email me. Need a few people to rally the troops to
work the river in sections so we can al enjoy this peice of paradise a little
more. Saw a couple of posting on about the cap river. I grew up in North Van but
never fished the cap till last coho season... it only took my 45 minutes of
being there and chew out a half dozen people on their poor ethics before i was
so disgusted that i just had to leave. Would be great to see DFO make a more
visable appearance there. May take on it was that alot of the people there dont
even know that there are regs so maybe dfo could tkae it upon themselves to post
some enlarged reg pertaining to the cap on signs at some of the more easily

What a beautifull day on the river, 2 wild fish(13,16lbs) on pink worm, both
fish released while they were still in the water(8-12 inches), not like the
dumbass I saw across the river behind 'on the way' store who gill lifted his
wild fish onto the rocks to pull the hook out and then poorly handled it back
into the water. When will people learn?! I still see fresh garbage every time I
go to the river, don't you guys realize that vests can hold all your pop cans

yo salt water surgean, in the sooke area, the top 50 feet of water is best as
long as you get the right roll on your bait(anchovy).I use a hot spot
flasher,6ft.of leader. You should also soak your bait in 1lt.salt water,1/2
cup-1cup rock salt.your bait will stay much firmer this way.In the spring
mnths, they slaughter halibut in oak bay apparently.good luck.

Went out yesterday. Great day on the water but only 1 undersized nook. Lots of
interesting activity. On way out towards QA-Roger Curtis area went through a
football filed size area that had euphasid shrimp right atthe surface and lots
of small gulls feeding. ALso found a herring ball. Usual gull activity lead us
to it. We couldn't believe how tight they were packed in. It was about the size
of a table and one big mass of solid herring, about 2 feet under the surface.
There were scales everywhere so we had just missed a carnage. Only 1 diving bird
around so we assumed there must have been predator fish that packed them up like
that. The cohos are still too small I think so I can only assume a dog fish or
nook. We trolled around the area but hit nothing. Further out inthe straight we
saw lots of dsmall gulls dipping and diving-looked like more euphasids but this
time the gulls were spread out all over the place in the open straight. The
north westerly picked up later in the day and we came back in. Oddly enogh we
saw no bait on our sounder throughout the whole day, just signs of bait near the
surface all over the place.

bite was on.Landed and released a 11 lber around 10:00. At 11:15 I beached and
released a 15 lber . Both fish wild , but the wait was well worth it.left the
river at 12:45 with out fish but with a life time of memories. P.S. Everyone
else had given up on the spot but I stuck it out(lucked out?) and let the fish
come to me.

Fished the Vedder today. Covered from Boulder down, On the way, as well as the
Gun Barrel and the LOWER Vedder Canal where the tides can play a part
(apparently). Didn't see anything, nor did we hook anything either. Fairly windy
day, and the vis was a bit "better" below the clay banks from
yesterday. Was hoping for a spey repeat, but that didn't happen. I'll be back
this Thursday with my gear rod most likely. Scott

Got out with my spey rod for the very first time today. Hooked and almost landed
a 15 pound (cons. estimate) Wild Doe. What a way to enter Spey fishing!! Caught
her on a Starlite leech with my camo head. After fighting her for 3 minutes, she
managed to pop my albright knot from leader to fly line (I figure I didn't wrap
it enough times) after I decided I should horse her a little more to get her in.
Water was medium to low with good vis (about 2- 2 1/2 feet vis) below the clay
banks. Certainly made my day!! Heard of two other fish in the lower river
caught. Scott PS - Mcdicks in Chilliwack is way underutilized, make use of their
drive through on your way to the upper river, LOL!

Just an awsome two days sturgion fishing on this section of the Fraser. Many
fish 7-9 ft. and some we couldn't even get to see. We fought one for over two
hours and it would not surface! Gotta hate that eh? Saw one roll, must have been
over 11 ft. and thats no shit! I,d best be spoolin, my new TLD-20 with some 90#
Dacron and say the hell with the 40# mono. It just won't do.

water is real nice, green in coulor good visibility could see well in the water
with polerized lenses. I wish i felt good enough to stay it looked great. It
would be nice if people would stop throwing shopping carts in to the water I saw
4 and only had time to grab one and drag it out they re heavey suckers when you
got em in faster water.

Fished the Cowichan Wednesday and Thursday. The river was high and fast. Not
alot of good access for fly casting. Looks like a drift boat is the way to go.
No steelhead but 3 rainbow on a stonefly nymph.
