Sorry to here about the dry spell . It only makes catchin that first one even
sweeter . Atleast you don't have to make up stories about catching fish, like
some people on this board. Sixteen and a half lbers seems to be caught by some
people every weekend.

Consider myself and fishing buddy to be good anglers, pounded the river in jan
with at least 60 man hours fished.not catching fish hardly bothers me for
overall outdoor experience makes up for it . what bugs me is knotheads like
slayer and broad at on the way store that fabricate fish tales to get others
jacked for nothing.

Drift and jet boats are allowed, but you are going to piss off the shore
fisherman. Two years ago I ran a jet boat into the lower end and had about 5
fiherman throw rocks at my boat. Leave the vedder for shore fisherman. There is
really no advantage to fish from a boat as you can access all the spots from
walking. There is also way to many fisherman leaving little room to fish and
contol your boat.

So it's my time to share my happiness. Worked very hard today from first light
untill 1:30 when I finally tagged 12.75lb steele. Overall it is hard not many
other fish today, mine was third at Fred's at about 2:00. My advice for weekend
anglers: work hard, cover water and change bait. Remember Worst day on fishing
is better than the best at work.

Fished the easter seal sat morning hoping to put to use my new 10 weight. Water
had ~4 foot visability so i tied on a GP and about 20 min of carfully working
the run I got a hudge hit while stripping in line. After a short fight(as the
steel was very slugish) a beautiful wild Steelhead was in my hands. First one on
the fly and first steelhead I have caught. Hit into one other near the tailout
but it spit the hook after ~1 min fight. There in the rivers!! Tight lines

Thanks Big Nympher. My motto since I started this was don't eat anything unless
it is chrome. It also means I put back a lot of fish which I think is a good
thing. Some of them sure were a good fight. I had one turn and run hard 50m down
river then snap my leader just because he could. Very cool.

Hi Brett. You are catching spawning coho. They change colour when they spawn as
with all salmon. Do a search on google images and you will see typical examples
of spawning 'ho's as they are referred to. Do not eat them when they are red...
soft and yucky.

I am new to river fishing and had a question. I was on the Chehalis this
morning. Clear water with good depth. The fishing was pretty good. I landed and
released 6 and hooked at least that many more. The problem is, I don't know what
they were. I can't find anything that looks like them in the fishing regs book
or on line. 8 to 15 pounds, green back with lots of spots and the sides were
moderate to heavy red. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Date:06-Jan-2004
Comments:
Matt, Kanaka creek is a great stream for cutties on the fly. Just remember to
play the fish quickly and release it gently. Don't remove the fish from the
water and do not handle the fish (only touch the fly). This will help increase
the chance of survival of these threatened species. Alouette is another
excellent stream in Maple Ridge for sea run cutties. I have caught numerous
cutties in the 1-2 pound range. A dead drifted stonefly with a strike indicator
is an effective technique. Try the area from Hot Rocks down to the bridge at
232.

Fished all weekend, froze my nuts off. If you attempt to do any wading, your
waders will instantly freeze, and your boots become blocks of ice, within
seconds, crazy. Anyways, had a hook up on both days, and lost them both. Caught
a bunch of white fish to. I find that alot of the time when you catch a white
fish, you hook a steely soon after in the same area.

Re: John - Use your 8wt setup, with your two heaviest sink tips. 2ft leader max.
Concentrate on the lower/slower end of the Vedder where you can get your fly
into the "zone" for optimum time.If you can, wait for warmer days. Use
bright Show Girls, Bunny Leaches or Egg Patterns, darker flies if the water
clouds up. Smaller presentations if it is clear. Work the river hard and cover
lots of water. Good Luck
