A buddy of mine went to Laidlaw/Jones Bar yesterday morning first thing and said
there were a ton of sockeye. We headed out around 3pm only to find about 70 guys
with not much happening. A few guys had a fish on shore and while we were there
(about 2 hours) we saw 8 or 10 fish on - not a lot for the amount of guys. My
buddy was amazed at how it totally died off from the morning. We were the lucky
ones tonight getting all our fish but many guys went home empty handed. It's a
bit of a mystery.

Fished out of Tofino for the weekend. Had our trailer axle bearing break on the
way there between P ALberni and Ucluelet around 11:00 PM. Talk about a night
mare. Had to replace the whole axle, jack stands, hack sawing the old rusted
ubolts...Took us well into Saturday to get through it all. Eventually got to
Tofino. Portland Point slow. 1 nook ~12 ibs on chovy at 115 feet. lost another
good size one on green coyote at 55 feet. Lots of smaller 3-7 ib nook around.
Tough to get out there as the weather systems kept moving through. First strong
SE then strong NW and back and forth. Suspect the unsettled weather has spread
the fish/bait or they're just not feeding as much. Good fly fishing for coho
near Tonquin Isl on 1 inch silver and purple/pink flies. Firecracker herring
around and cohos were jumping sporadically. Caught 3 and hooked into another
dozen fly casting with heavy sink tips. Lots of coho around Catface but didn't
fish for them. Trailer breakdown took a huge chunk out of the weekend. For those
of you who own a boat: Really appreciate the times all the gear works without
breaking. You are on borrowed time for your next headache. Cheers

Fished Saturday and hooked three springs in first half hour on Chilliwack R.
portion. One Sockeye an hour later (large - about 10 lbs). Saw quite a few
springs jumping. Most of them are already coloured up. Not a bad day. I heard
Sockeye on the Fraser will not open until end of July and then only on weekends
(can anyone verify this). Talked to a DFO rep. Apparently, lots of problems at
the weigh scale due to poor behaviour of fishers. Fish cops have been told to
straighten things out. If it doesn't get any better the entire sockeye fishery
on the Fraser could be closed.

Just got back from another weekend of fishing in the inlet. I found that the
fishing was very good still ended up with my two day limit quiet easily, and I
am looking forward to snacking on these beutiful fish later in the winter
months. As far as fishing I found that a few more of the bigger fish were around
70 feet deep in the late morning which was a nice break from the smaller ones
which I was realeasing, anyways if anyone has any good spots to fly fish for
coho in nanaimo area, so I can practise live releasing them it would be greatly
appreciated, I would prefer fly fishing some river mouths around the beach,
anyways enjoy reading the reports, good luck to everyone,

Spent a few hours fishing along the Coquitlam River on Sunday, thought I might
catch some rainbows after the river was stocked two weeks ago. No luck, only
caught and released some little cutthroats and coarse fish. Nice day though, it

only a few spots were fishable. Anyway, good luck all. :-)

Fished Renfrew from July 7-15.Spring fishing was horrible for this time of year
and only did well on one day with 2 springs biggest 25 pounds. Did see many
other springs caught. But on the other hand the coho fishing was unbeleavable
hooking over 100 coho. The biggest was 10 pounds. Fisheries are idots to think
the coho are in trouble. I have never seen so many coho ever. It is stupid that
their is no retention for them. Hopefully things will change.

Went to the Vedder and found myself alone with a lot of fish jumping in a pool
up top. It was me, the fantastic scenery, and all those fish to myself. I
couldn't believe it... Hooked into one nice spring but didn't beach it, I lost
it as soon as I identified it. Caught me off guard since there were lots of big
sockeyes in the river and I release them in about a foot of water. And most of
the fish had lots of energy. I mean they're airborne 3,4, sometimes 5 times. My
arms are hurting right now.

WOW!!!!!!! I am back from Bamfield .The fish were not big but I think that it
could have been the best fishing I have ever had! WOW! The night of arrival at
our cabin we managed to push ourselves to get out fishing just for an hour or
two before dark, to get a "feel" for what was happening. I put the
first rod out. As I was getting the second rod out the first one started to
pound like crazy after only 2 minutes!!! In about a 15 minute fight I landed a
22Ib Spring! It was solid action for the next hour and a half as we landed fish
after fish. We quit after about 1 3/4 hours of total fishing time with 4 springs
ranging in size from 14 to 22 1bs , two 5 lb coho and 1 5lb sockeye. We released
a couple of 7-8 lb spring and lost a couple of fish as well!!!!!!! The rest of
the trip was similar, some days a bit slower but very good. Most fish were
teenagers up to low twenties..... I have never seen so much bait in the water
....just boiling with bait everywhere... .really good to see. Greg

Fished around the Nehaliston-Interlakes area over the weekend. Sedges hatching
evey day but the hatch was light and the fishing off. Very warm water
temperatures - 20 degrees in most waters right up to 5000 feet. Suspect the fish
were feeding at night or early morning but drinking and nursing our hangovers
occupied that time so we never got out during those times. Fished some rivers as
well and they were much more consistent.

Fished on Sat morning from 6:00AM till 2:00PM. Out of 6 of us I was the only one
with any luck. I had 3 springs on and landed a nice 12lb Red. I did hook 4
sockeye, which I very gently released. Out of 20+ people there I seen 5 springs
taken. One guy in a boat that came up river said that there was a net across
further down. They were hauling it in as he went by and it was full of springs.
The fish I hooked were way out as far as I could cast. For the amount of springs
coming up it has been pretty slow. Maybe it has something to do with the nets?
Cheers, Mars

fishng partners came home with fish, one (hehe) was a 12 lb white spring. Saw 2
of them come out for sure. There was 2 DFO officers down there making sure
everyone was fishing up to par, so if you are gonna keep fish, make sure they

sun hit the water it was like someone turned on a switch cought about 6/7 bows
between 12-17inches in the first hour. Dont forget the sun block gets very hot
up there the next few hours went deep with #12 black and gold stones must of got
another 6 to 7 fish that way aswell. Went back to camp (Ross lake) to get out of
the sun for a bit and had lunch. Took out the boat after lunch for a couple of
hours hit about 6 fish to 16 inches on a #12brown and gold beadhead stone. Get
out there guys fishing like this only lasts a few months of the year dont forget
to read your regs befor you go the river is catch and release and has a bait ban
as for the mouth/lake 3 fish a day must be at least 14inches. --tight lines--

Pacific Salmon Commission was released today and was sent out to you earlier. We
plan to maintain non-retention of sockeye in the Fraser River and Harrison River
recreational fisheries until the Summer Run sockeye component is available for
harvest which is expected to be approximately early August. It is anticipated
that the fishery will only be opened for a short period (approximately 2 weeks)
due to concerns for late run sockeye.

Punded the Fraser pretty hard this past weekend. Fished up and around
Wellington/Grassy. Springs were pretty hard to come by. My buddy got one jack,
and I lost one. Between the two of us we hooked into over 30 Sockeye. All
released unharmed. Only seen 8 springs caught in the 14 hours that we were out.

Fishing up here has been vey good, with lots of good sized chinook coming in
from the Lighthouse area. We are fishing further out from the reef than normal,
in 350-400ft of water and running the lines at 225-250ft. Good mix of white and
red springs with an average weight of 22lbs. They are hitting mostly on
blue/green combo hootchies, about half way through the ebb, with a few taken on
plugs,#500 and 600.

Spent last week at Link Lake, NE of Princeton. First half of week was too windy
for float tubing, but saw one guy take four really nice 15 - 20" rainbows
on flies from a boat (he wouldn't tell me what he was using). An osprey grabbed
a real beauty just a few feet from me later in the week, and I hooked a couple
of smaller ones which I released.

Oh ya, left out one thing. Good work to the guy who was fishing the lower part
of the Scale and gave the guy S_it for draggin the sockeye on shore. These
public embarrassments set the standard as to what should happen to people
mishandling the Sockeye.

Fished Mike Lake yesterday from 7:30 to just after 11:00. Float Tubing in the
sun caught one smal one about 9 inches that I let go and had 2 more that
released themselves form my olive green wooly bugger. My bro-in-law kept two
nice ones released two smaller ones and also had two do the self release methode.
The lake started to get a little busy later in the morning but only saw one
other guy catch some trout from his row boat with his two young sons. All in all
a good day fishing.

Another wonderfull Canada Day weekend spent in Ucluelet. Good fishing for all
species. Our group of 14 friends took home bottom fish, 42 chinooks and 27
halibut. The salmon were smaller than last year with our biggest weighing 25
lbs. Currently fishing there is good to hot. We had a close whale encounter and
a pod of Pacific Coast Dolphins ride our boat's front wake for abount 10 minutes
- a memorable experience!

Fished the Broken Islands for a few days, Lots of Cohos in the 4 - 6 pound
range. Used Needlefish imitation and my son used Buzz-Bombs and Zingers. Even
casting from shore was very successful. 50 % of the caught fish were hatchery
marked. Watch the weather if you go !!!

Oh yah, forgot that one of my BIG reports that was removed was about the Bowron
Lake chain. My buddy and I did the circuit a week ago. Caught plenty of big lake
trout in Isaac Lake on a red and white spoon trolled at the dropoff. Also hooked
into three of them on trolled flies of various descriptions, but lost them all.
We also caught a number of smallish rainbows and my buddy nailed a nice big one
at the end of the circuit in the Bowron River. Additionally we caught numerous
whitefish at Pat's Point, some Squah (gross looking, but they do fight well) and
a few small kokanee. Also caught something that may have been a small Dolly. Not
sure. Anyhow, I highly recommend the trip both for the scenery and for the
fishing. Going before school let out ensured that the place wasn't a complete
Gong Show. I suppose that September would also be a good time to go as it would
be less crowded and the weather might actually be better.

Comments:
I fished Gardom Lake two days ago and Pillar Lake yesterday. Gardom was
interestng as I had heard reports of bass being in the lake, but didn't
completly believe them. I believe them now as I caught six using (at different
times of course) a red, beadhead chironomid under a strike indicator and an
olive bead-head gold-ribbed hare's ear fished in the same manner. None were too
big, although one came in at 12 inches and put up a great fight. Yesterday at
Pillar I caught 7 rainbows, with the largest being 15 inches and several (three,
to be exact) that were sardines. I released them all. I caught them on a natural
coloured bead-head hare's ear (trying to imitate the dragonfly nymphs that were
certainly about) and on an elkhair caddis. There was this one fisherman there
who was having no luck, so when I talked to him I gave him one of the hare's ear
nymphs. He promptly hooked into a big 'bow. He kept it, and then kindly
presented it to me at the end of the day because I had helped him to catch it.
When I cleaned it, it was full of shrimp (large, olive). Its flesh was very pink
and it was tasty as well (ate it for breakfast this morning). I'm going to go
back to Pillar and try some shrimp patterns.
