Steelhead are coming in to the lower river now. I think it is the high water that is helping the early winters. Gooey bobs and spin+glows seem to work well for the big early winters. Don't forget your pink worms!

I've found that coho row (especially fresh stuff) works wonders on the Chehalis (for coho anyway). Lots of guys are using spinners and solo roe but we generally have more luck than they do using our roe. Congrats on the early steelhead - it should pick up very soon in both the Chehalis and the Velier.

Trout fishing is pretty hot. Just some real fresh roe, Barly any weight, and keep your line slack. You get hit after hit during upcoming tide.

Went to the Chehalis again and landed a clean 8lb hatchery coho, also got 1 4lb wild (very dark) and a 5lb hatchery that was also very dark. There are still some clean fish left but they are hard to get. I expect the season is just about over for coho. Very few dogs left witch is very nice to see. Fish the canyon from light till about 10:30, my friend got to cold.(hehe) Looking forward to doing some stealhead fishing this year. This will be my first serious year and am hoping to get one for the photo album. As for the water in the chehalis it is high but excellent visibility. The rain today will bring the river up even more and will prob bring some fresh coho up. Good luck and tight lines.......................

My first time fishing at Chehalis River today. I hooked 2 dark coho and a colored chum by the Hatchery. No fresh fish, but I'd expect some will be coming in during this week.

Hiked way into the Chehalis canyon on Sunday morning and fished from 9:30am until 11:30am using freshly cured coho roe and number 4 gami's. Between my brother-in-law and I, we landed 5 or 6 coho and lost a couple more. The chums are far less dominant than they were a week ago. Most of the coho were colored but did take one 7.5 pound beautiful silver hatchery doe. We were fishing in the slow deep water with our roe at least a foot off the bottom.

Hit the river after work today. Boy the chum count has really gone down since Friday. Lots of coloured coho, but I think I hooked into several nice ones in the faster water. Caught several cutties too, looks like Steelhead season is just around the corner. Can't wait for that.

Seems we all have a lot in common. I was broken into last year as well, right in the hatchery parking lot. Took Ricks advise and tryed Chehalis. Hooked 2 very large dark springs, several chum and released 3 coho. 2 dark ones and 1 nice wild doe. A few fresh chum moved in below the hatchery and are in the fast water. Mike is right about going small. Yarn the size of a single egg on a #4 hook does the trick.

The good news is the river is in perfect shape, the dogs are slowly dying off. The cohos are in,but 80% of them are coloured. There are chromers around, but they are very hard to hit on. Beached one and lost 2 very clean ones. The bad news is, my truck got broken into.

I have been fishing on Squamish River for four days this week. Someone may ask if I am crazy. To spend four consecutive days fishing for Chum could hardly convince people to think that I am normal. Whenever I tell my fishing buliies to go for Chum with me in Squamish, they reply with the same hesitatant expression, "Chum?! Why do you choose Squamish but not Chehalis or Velier for Coho?" But at the end of their fishing days they bring home with a silvery Chum and a big smile on their faces. Then they also ask me the same question, "When will you go to Squamish again?" To be honest with all people, the freshness of Chum deteriorate significantly in the past two weeks. Still, if you are patient enough to wait for your turn to come, eventually you will end up hooking an ocean-caught-like Chum at the end of the day. Some people may challenge my statement especially those are so obstinate that Chum are not their game fish in fresh water fishing. It is also very hard for some people to believe that once I took 15 minutes to beach a 10 lb. Chum with my centre pin rod and reel but this is a fact. I am also amazed with its fighting ability as well. I am here to make my appeal to some sportfishermen who are interested in pursuit of fresh Chum in Squamish. You should act quickly because actually you are racing with time now. Fishing should be good at least for a week or ten days. After that, you will see the same old dog salmon again you are familiar in Velier,Chehalis, Stave and Norris Creek. Their body colours look like a Japanese Koi. They swim in shallow water to stretch the last leg and wait for completion of their final missions---to ferterlize riverbed soil! For those who think Chum is not the type of their game fish, please put aside your strong ego for a while , make a trip to Squamish and fish around the area between the confluence of Mamquam and Squamish River. You will be surprised of the fishing outcome and your impression on Chum may be changed forever. Unfortunately I shall be out of town for a week. By the time I am able to fish on this river again, the prime time may be gone. I really miss you, Mighty Squamish River!!!!!!!!!

Ahhh, Geeeez, You had to go and mention Cogburn! Well, OK, it's on a map, but we should tell everyone that the road's bad (yeah, real bad) and, hmm, it's all blown out from the rain, too, and, um, it's a small crek and the coho spook real easy, so gear fishermen can forget it, yeah, and the coho run there is over, too. OK seriously- Cogburn is a beautiful small stream and can reward the ardent angler, if it's treated with the respect and care it deserves. It's a pretty little stream from the bridge down to the mouth at the Harrison, with some nice deep pools, but mostly pocket water. Tough wading in places, especially when the water is up a bit, so be careful.

The river is now dropping and clear. Still lots of dark chums and quite a few dark coho. A few bright coho in the river. For good clean coho try Cogburn Creek on the East side of Harrison Lake. You are allowed to keep two hatchery fish in this beautiful stream and the fishing pressure is light.

done great right from the start of the season. first week caught a wild coho between 14 and 15 pounds ( biggest one for me all season). The whole month of october and the first week of november caught over 40 coho (15 hatchery). ive been hearing its an off year? well i guess ive put alot of time in this spot ( 4 or 5 days a week) so i havent done too bad. The last couple of weeks though just the oli coho. What a difference all this high water makes? I guess they've all just been running up to norrish( suicide).i keep hearing the big run is still waiting to come up. Well if this is true I dont know if the fishing on the slough is gonna be gang busters unless you happen to be there at the right time.I know for a fact that norrish creek will be productive if this big run is gonna appear. my most productive lure on the dewdney slough (nicomen) has been a brass Tee Spoon with red tees. also 3/8 or 1/2 brass red/pink stripe crocks. also blue fox vibrax brass and orange. I've been alot more productive the last three weeks spin casting in the slower water instead of trolling. Above the bridge ive caught and seen a few, but nothing like it was the first month of the seaon. She's starting to dwindle down now so i think i"ll be fishing for cuts . good luck and i hope another run is on its way.

Started off at easter seal at 8:30 a.m.,only saw 1 dark coho landed until noon.Got to Suicide about 1:00 p.m. and the fisheries guys had just pulled in their net,saw about a dozen coho. From what I heard they only had the net in the water for about 15 minutes. The fish I saw were still in pretty nice shape, silver with a tinge of red on some, shiny silver all around on others.I fished until dark but would'nt you know it they all ignored everything I tossed their way.I have taken 3 nice 6 to 8 pounders out of this little river within the last 4 days though so I did'nt feel to bad.I find that a small piece of hot pink or peach wool trimmed to resemble a single egg works best for me.Good luck and tight lines to all.

Fished the Squamish yesterday (saturday) Hooked into a mess of chums, but the only problem was a lot of them were fairly coloured up. Only saw one chromer hooked all day, of which was lucky! Fish are really starting to colour up and lose the freshness and really hold in certain places. Lots of black bellies (not very good meat). I think this run is just about done folks, or I'd give er another few days and then I'd leave the fish alone. If the fish were a little chromer, I might have fished the Squamish today, but I said screw it. Went to the Velier today, fished the upper reaches. Lots of really worn down chums, and I found quite a few schools of coloured coho, some in fairly good condition (aka white bellies, the meat is still good, and some red tinge that is still shiny). Also hooked into some big coloured springs that put up a descent fight. I'd say another week and the Velier should be done. Fish the upper reaches if you want any success with consistency. There are some late coming springs, as I've had freinds hoook chrome bar springs in early december, and I ain't lying on that one. I think my next trip will probably be out to the Chehalis. The chehalis coho are really starting to plow in according to sources I've heard. The trick for them is to use roe for a good deal of the day in the morning and then move to wool patterns. If its just a little bit silty (like 2-4 feet of vis) the fishing should be awesome because they can't see you, but believe me, in the water they can definitely see your presentation, I've learned that from expierience with Coho. Where you can see maybe 2 feet, they can see about 5 feet. The Chehalis Coho are known to run fresh all the way to february believe it or not, although the runs really taper off in a very sulien curve downward. November to Mid December Coho fishing on the chehalis should really begin picking up. Its just the known time of year. I might try Suicide creek soon, just because I"m hearing so much about it, and the Stave's Coho returns this year have apparenlty been phenominal this year! Talk to you y'all later, Scott

Friday Nov. 12th and Norrish (Suicide) is extremely high boiling chocolate milk with maybe one foot visibility, it's in the trees on the east side below the bridge. Chehalis, same, boiling tan coloured wild water. Went to the Stave as the only "sure thing" clear water around and it was nice till they opened the spillways at the dam and the whole place is now flooded out. BC Hydro says the spillways will likely remain open all weekend. There were a lot of coho showing in amongst the billion or so chum, still some fresh chum and quite a few fresh, bright coho showing up. Even after it was flooded, at least a dozen people left with their one or two coho each. Coho were taking crocodiles, minnow pattern flies and spinners under floats, with most catches coming from the boat launch area in the bay. Nice to see all the coho. I just wish people would show more respect for the chum, we saw a number of people drag a dog up on the rocks and then boot it around trying to get the hook out, then they'd boot it back in the water. Cheers.

Mike, Spent 10 days on the Thompson and returned yesterday. It is the worst return in years. Creel survey was dismal. Very few fish anywhere. Water level is ideal and the crowds were only around on the weekends. Anyway I wouldn't recommend going there unless you know the river very well. Many anglers were fishing 6 or 7 days to get one fish. I managed 10 hooked in 10 days which was pretty lucky considering the very poor return. Total return has been downgraded from 2200 to less than 1400 according to MELP from Nov. 7 Anyways, tight lines, I hope you get a bunch.

I went fishing on Squamish River today. The rain was pouring all day long. Although the river was really murky and the visibility was extremely low, tones of chum were in the river and they were very fresh. My buliy kept a chrome chum weighed about 10 lb. and it was a beauty. You cannot find any silver-bright chum like this in local rivers around Fraser Valley and you have to respect their abilities to fight once they are hooked up. They roll and twist the bodies in resistance to any lure hooked up into their mouths. It gives you an elusion that you fight with a coho but it is a chum indeed. I enjoy fishing on this river and the fishing pressure is minimal. As a bonus you can watch bald eagles feeding on Squamish River and enjoy the scenic drive in Howe Sound as well.

Scott, there's almost nowhere to put a boat in at the Chehalis (unless you want to try blood rock, but I wouldn't till the river drops!). About the only way to fish is from the shore...roe, wool, spinners and spoons will all work, depending on water type. Fish the slower water or back eliies, the coho prefer these spots. Good luck and tight lines :)

Fished the Squamish today. Rained hard yesterday and rained hard today. Mamquam, and Cheakamus were completely blown out, and about 4 feet higher than usual, and the Squamish was about 5 or 6 feet higher than usual, and muliier than the Fraser. I gotta say, this intimidates a lot of anglers, but the Chum were so thick and so mighty that I, honest to god today, had two casts per bite, and thats not any exaggeration. Anyways, I only landed 5 of these bad boys, as some I'd hook and lose right away, others, the bites were so subtle that you'd hit one and it'd spit out before you could set it. Anyways, to make a long story short, these fish fight hard, and are of a good size and in general all are in good shape. I saw several chrome and close to chrome chum beached, of which most of mine were beached. Green wool and various shades of orange, or peach, or pink all worked. I dont think theres a wool pattern that any chum will turn down. First fish I hooked ran me directly down river. I figure it was in the 20's and chrome fresh. I didn't get a chance to see it, as it ran over 100 yards of line off my reel and I couldn't keep up with it, so I just broke off the leader. Anyways, if the fishing was this good on a dirty muliy day, what do you think It'll be like on a clear low day? AWESOME. The only problem with some of the fish, was because of the mud, when you'd hook them it would disorient them and they'd almost beach themselve sometimes and then take off. Recommendations are for fishign for chums: float fishing, small small float, low amounts of lead, just enough to weight it, but not compromise your sensitivity aka the fish shouldn't have to pull much to make you feel it. These fish bite very subltely, like trout, and when you set the hook, often times if its fresh, you're in for the fight of your life. Stick with about 2 - 3 foot leaders. 15 pound to 20 pound mainlne, 10-12 pound leaders for clear water, and 12-15 pound leaders for dirty water. size 2 hooks exclusively and if it dirties up, move to size one. Make sure those hooks are sharp too! On this river right now you can keep 2 chum per day. NO COHO RETENTION, if you cook a coho, which you may hook the oli one, TREAT IT WITH RESPECT. For fly fishing you want to have an 8 weight rod or more, with lots of backing, a floating fly line with I'd say about anywhere from about 4-6 feet of sink tip. This sink shouldn't be fast sinking, but slow to moderate, because the Squamish is a slower flowing river like the FRaser. Use 12-15 pound leaders, and big bright streamer patterns with orange and other colours such as green/chartreuse. With these fish, a 10 or 11 weight would be optimal. With an 8 weight, your chances are slim, but you can still have a blast. Good time for y'all to get out the spey rod, these fish will make a Thompson steelhead look like a smolt in terms of fight. Anyways, thats my report, Maybe the Squamish isn't for everyone, nice river. Maybe y'all hate chums because you get a bad impression of them from the dogs you see in the Velier or Chehalis, but if you want to see what kinda backbone your rod has, theres no better way to test it, then on a fresh chum. No spring or Steelhead can compare, and THATS A FACT!

Still lots of NIce coho to be had in this river, lots of them chromers, a few fish with the red shades on their sides, but nonetheless in good shape. My advice of the week: Dont fish the pools. Colour of the week: remains peachy King wool. Best all around colour you can show a fish! In small presentations though. Going to the Squamish this weekend, I'll keep you all posted most likely. Should hook into a mess of Fresh chums, and the oli coho, all of which I will release, but man do they EVER fight hard when they're fresh. Talk to you all later, Scott

This river system will be closed on Nov.15/99 because the Ministry of Enviroment belives the return of steelhead is at a critical level and cannot sustain one hooking mortality.Fishing improved considerably last year 1998.The down stream count of smolts taken at the hatchery fence has averaged between 7000 to 12000 every year starting in 1981.River seems to be putting out.Must be a problem some where else. Why the closure? Maybe THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOUR FAVOURITE RIVER.Phone or write the Ministry and find the real story behind this draconin action. The Steelhead Society would be a good place also.

I went fishing on Velier today and fished just above Allison Pool. Chum were everywhere again and lots of dark spring. Luckily I was able to land and kept a clean buck spring. Water flow conditon was not bad and visibility was relatively good. Although there were many people fishing on the river, still, it was not a problem to find a good spot for yourself. Hopefully it will have another fresh spring and coho run in the near future in order to boost the fishing on the river. Unfortunately the chance became slim becuase commercial fishing boats piled up on Fraser River around the area of Port Mann Bridge fishing for chum. Do not expect a strong fresh run for local rivers in the near future!!! Good luck and tight lines.

Hit the Chehalis today and did fairly well landing 5 hatchery coho - kept two silver ones about 5 pounds each. I got in an argument with a beek that literally walked right in front of me, waded into the river where I had just hooked (and released) a coho, and spooked a bunch of beautiful coho!! I explained to him that they are spooky fish - he didn't care. Anyway, I went 50 yards upstream and landed 4 more hatchery coho right in front of him (he didn't catch anything with his huge chunk of weight bottom bouncing with a long leader!) Anyway, lots of clean coho, lots of chum (some clean). We used coho row all day and that seemed to do the trick for us. Some caught on spinners but none caught on plain wool - water has dropped and is running clear. Good Luck.

I went fishing on Chehalis today. The water was considerably high but some of the spots still allowed you to wade across the river. Chum are everywhere and some of them are still keepers. Coho are spotty but you can find them if you are patient enough. They are likely to hang around some back eliies and still pools in the creek. Try to find some creeks you are familiar with and they are there. Be cautious about sulien water rising if heavy rain starts pouring. All folks have to be careful of your valuables and do not keep them in your vehicle as I heard that some car break-in happened recently.

The Chehalis is dropping faster than you can see it. It is almost the same as it was before the last big rain fall. Fish everwhere (if you like dogs). Landed 4 coho on spinners.

Hey there, the river seems to be a little clearer but the level is still very high. It will take another day for the water to come down. Fished the canal today for about 2hrs and nothing happening. Herd of 2 coho hooked but not landed. They were using spinners. Hope this helps........
