Water was really high today, still very clean. Fishing for coho seemed slow by the hatchery, about 20 fishermen and only saw 4 coho taken.

Was down at the Chehalis with four friends. We all had a great day. Many chum were caught and released, and we also hooked into some springs. One of our bunch snagged (and released) a nice coho, so they're in the river too. I have to say that I'm not sure why all the derisive comments about chum are bandied about. Perhaps the comments come from drift fishermen. Try them on a fly, and wow, get ready for a ride. Plenty of today's chums were very fresh, jumped repeatedly and took 75 yard or more runs. If pulling that in on a #7 rod isn't a challenge for you, then I don't know what is. Perhaps bluefin tuna? They don't run on the Chehalis, though :) We were using mostly some sort of yellow and red streamer pattern and another deal that my buddy calls the "copper avenger". Lots of flash did the trick in the high water. Just a straight drift with very little action. Fun...my arms are tired.

Fished the Capilano today with my buddy Brent. The fact that it has been raining today has contributed to the fact that the water is the highest I"ve ever seen. Remember the Freshet and how much they let the Dam go? Well it was that, and about another 2 feet on top of that. It was just psycho, I've never seen the Cap that high, EVER! Anyways, my buddy and I hunted around the river for holding water for quite a while. Concluded that with the high water, Dog leg pool was the best, but we still didn't hook any fish, although the fish were there as you could peer down and see the odd one surface etc, etc. Saw about 3 coho caught on the east bank just south of dog leg pool in that holding section of water just below the bank. Anyways, if Chad Weberg is there, give me a call, I own a car now, and I can take you fishing, just name a day or let me know your days off and send me an email. Anyways, hopefully this rain will all stop. As for that, the Cap wont produce much because of the high murky water with 4 feet of vis. Right now in the Cap, there are the odd chum, a lot of jack springs, quite a few small coho, and the odd really really big northern coho. This is what we saw in the holding channel at the hatchery. I figure when the bait ban comes off in two days, that roe might work the best in the holding sections of water. We used peach wool on size 4 hooks 8 pound leader. Talk to you all later, Scott

Spent a couple of hours on the Stave this afternoon. Caught 4 chums, 2 on fly and two on bait-cast rod, ( 1 very clean). Snagged a few more, they are everywhere. Talked to some DFO employees counting carcasses today. They said they had been netting the pool by the boat launch (in the Ruskin picnic area) on Monday and Tuesday; Brought in almost 200 coho, and about 25 springs. Apparently some big coho. They will be netting again on Friday. As to the previous posting about Chums fighting hard - one snapped my 8 wt. fly rod in half today, what a drag (or lack of...??) as I only just built it this spring. Oh well...

I went for a hike this weekend along fisher man's trail and was amazed to find some great spots and some great runs. Mind you I saw absolutely no one fishing, what is the reason for that? Is there not resident trouts in that stream or is there some restrictions on this water. It is so close to home that the water is just too tempting. I have fished lower for salmon with success, but this was perfect fly fishing water.

In regards to undercover DFO Officers. I too was fined at the Vedder by a undercover DFO officer. It was my fault I did not know the rules. It is my first year fishing, I know the quotas, asked the proper questions on how to release, learned what I could from Darryl at Hubbs, the net and this site. However, after landing and killing a 35 pound spring I was in a hurry to get my fishing spot back before I lost it to someone else. I placed the spring in the water, and resumed my spot. 20 minutes later I was called and fined for not recording the fish on my licence. I had no Idea it had to be done right away. I always recorded it after cleaning as not to lose my spot or mess up my licence with my dirty hands from the kill and hauling the fish back up river. The DFO officer was very nice and respectful and explained the rules to me. The officer told me that he/she gave me enough time. I was talking to the officer when I was landing the fish as the officer acted like a fisher who wanted to know what I was using etc. I would have thought a warning was in order too as I am firm in all aspects of keeping these resources for future generations... How ever no such luck. $115.00 fine. $3.28 cents a pound, still $1.72 a pound cheaper than Safeway.

Fished the Vedder on the weekend, I must say, there are a multitude of great fish to be had in this river right now. I gotta say out of the Coho, Springs, and Chum that I hooked all day, the Chums fought me the hardest by far. They weren't super fresh, but every now and then you'd hook a fairly fresh one. I recall one in particular that ran me straight down river almost as if it was going to the ocean. I've always maintained that Chum are the hardest fighting Salmon, and I proved it two days ago. As I once heard, they jump higher than Coho, and run harder than Steelhead and are more bullheaded than Springs. Fish the edge of fast water/slow water and you should be able to find some aggressive, but stronger chums. The most universal color you can use on the Vedder right now is this. For Springs and Chums, use size 2 hooks, with peach wool the size of of half a dime on 12 pound leader (ultragreen trimmed in a little egg ball. For Coho, use size 4 hooks, with 8 pound leader, and peach wool, trimmed in a ball half the size you are using for Springs/Chums. Believe me, you think it looks small, but small produces the Coho, especially in gin clear water. Stick with Peach and if the bite gets slow, move to light green, and try some pinks as well, and you will have fish biting all day, and you wont have to rip your line outta the water like all those jerk fishermen. Anyways, these fish are biting quite well. The Springs and Chums especially. Give peach a try and you'll be proud you did, Good luck, Scott.

In response to Scott's comment, I went fishing on Stave river last Friday and hooked up a lot of chum and it seemed that they did not quit biting. If you want to get some fresh chum, try your luck in faster current and you have a good chance to catch some nice fish. It is very good if you want to bring some novice sportfishermen to fishing such as your children or friends who never fish before. Fishing on this river, they are very sure to have a great fun to fight with those monster chum.

Steve,I dont think you're going to get much support here, for one reason a) you are above your daily quota for adult springs, so you couldn't legally keep it yourself, therefore you are fishing illegally. But say you are within your limit aka 4 hatchery coho per day, and you keep one, and then you offer it as a gift to someone, you can do that, provided it is within your quota for that day. So what this means is, you are offering it as a gift, and you can only keep 3. YOu have to write a letter stating name yoru #, license number, home address, phone no., etc, etc, and that this is a gift taken from the vedder on such and such a date, and any other specs you can mention, I'm not sure exactly how, but its in your fishing regs. I mean, I can level with you about this one, but what if everyone on the river has licenses, and theres this one guy who catches Big springs all day, are we all just gonna sit back, and let him catch all the adult springs, and we just write them down on our quotas of fish? Next time, walk over to the fellow, and give him a few tips, and tell him you'd love to give him a spring if you could, but its illegaly, so you're gonna tell him how you caught and what you caught it on. I realize this is in the report page, but I think this should be left up for all to see. I'm sure this kinda thing goes on a lot at rivers, I mean why wouldn't it? When you're with buddies, of course you wanna help them out. Its just its illegal to do so, especially with the Vedder Spring run, with which we really need to protect the adults, and wean out the jacks, to keep this multi million dollar sport fishery alive! Scott

Fished the Skagit downstream of 26 mile bridge yesterday. First time this year and my little car hated the drive in. Road is loaded with potholes all the way. The fishing was outstanding though. Fished from 11 till 5 and didn't see another person all day. At first there were a few green winged mayflies floating around-about a size 16/18. Green drakes perhaps. Had good luck with a simple wet/soft hackle pattern in size 18 that I had tied. Has a green hackle fiber tail, thin green body of rabbit dubbing and a soft hackle collar of a couple of turns of dark starling feather. The starling works very well for tiny flies because it has extremely short barbs. Fish it just below the surface. About 2:30 the blue winged olives started coming off in droves and the fishing got really good. Size 18-20 standard BWO patterns and olive comparaduns were vey effective. The fish weren't interested in bigger imitations when they were keyed in on these little sailboats. Has anyone fished the section by Sumallo grove recently. I'd like to get out once more before the river closes but I don't want to spend an hour driving my aging suspension over all those holes again. Pat

I fish the Vedder with my dad and I would like to know if anyone out there can give me some information on what type of fly I would use to catch dog salmon at the mouth of not only the Vedder but the Stave, etc. I want to go to the mouth because it would give me a bit more room away from the crowds upriver. If there are any spoons that I might spin cast with I would like to try that as well. I have a professional day Friday and the info would really be helpful. Thank you.

I needed a dose of reality and spent the day checking to see if any coho were coming into the creek. The water was very low and the pools that I fished last year have been re-arranged a bit. I fished downstream from the bridge and the lower end is chock full'o'chum. I saw a few cutts and some coho in the deeper pools as the big fresh male chum stirred things up a bit. The low water is keeping everything in the lower end right now, and with some rain and about another 6" to a foot of depth in the riffles downstream of the bridges, there should be some good coho action soon. Hooked and released a bunch of Chum and a few fresh males and females were in evidence, good thing I brought the 9 wt. Seemed to get most of the mouth takers on a purple egg-sucking leech and also on a bright pink and silver fly. Tough fishing in the small pools as they are stacked three deep with spawned out chum and fresh ones coming through, even the full sink line was snagging pectoral fins as the fish swam over the line. Cheers.

I don't normally post follow up about after people's comment, but my comment regarding lots of kids fishing in the Stave was never supposed to be negative. I hope I did not offend any of you beside Tim. Anyway, Lower Fraser River is still pretty good for some coarse fish species. The chub and squawfish have now move on since the water has gotten colder. The tom cods on the other hand are biting really well at the Fraser Mouth. This is the time of the year when they come back to spawn. Best way to catch these is bottom bouncing with worms, shrimps, etc. Remember, daily limit for tom cods is 8.

Fished the Stave river this morning and early afternoon (Sunday). It was very crowded. Most of the chums in the system were all pretty dark. Most of them are males, didn't see many females around. Bottom bouncing seemed to work better. Float fishing was not too productive. Green wool was probably the best colour. The odd cohos were caught, all fairly small ones. Too many kids fishing, saw two fishermen having a fight, it was a pretty exciting day.

I find small yarn almost any natural colour works best.

well like everyone else and there dog i was up at the vedder river today.like alot of days this week i was, man oh man is there ever alot of people fishing these days! what happened to those good old days when one had at least a two hairs distance from another fellow angler.Boy the river is crowded. Anyways the fishing is good.Fish are every where, up high down low. Most fish are in fairly good condition still to.Caught lots of fish, cohos and springs.Almost every color seems to work to as long as its presented to a fish the right way.Saw alot of pinks in the final days of spawn, people ,people, people, please leave the pinks alone. There are so many people deliberately trying to catch or snag these fish that arent legal to keep, and hell dont even realy put that great of a fight on either.Give them some respect and let them finish their life cycle without being bothered. Bug the dogs, at least they will put up a fight worth your time.Heck, you might even have one break your line and make you sweat a little!! Any how the fishing is good and should remain this way until at least mid november.Good luck and spread out a little.Or try some other rivers. The vedder is not the only river in town that produces good salmon fishing.

Well the river is in good fishing condition with it raising bit by bit with the weather we should be getting in the next few days should bring in all those springs evryone is waiting to catch .I made my fishing debue on thanks giving monday and the place was a zoo with cars evry were you looked I was going to start at the ranger run because the lower river was just a joke. You have to realize it does'nt matter where you fish, there are fish evrywhere on the river I stoped at a spot just above alison pool where the river starts to turn started fishing 5min in a huge spring 30 plus riped my line I was'nt ready for that at all anyways lost it right away with a few jump it's tough to fight a big spring and the current the size 2 hook did'nt help much eather .landed a few coho and pinks but there was alot of fresh chinooks in the river to be had I lost three all day.Anyways it was pretty good for my first day out this year had a great time and hope to get out again soon river is getting higher and it is real clear easy to spot those big springs I was using size 2 hook with peach wool most of the day that seemed to work as my buddy hooked his first fish(chum) ever on red wool as that was working aswell but they will take anything you put infront of there face right now as there are so many fish in the river and it will only get better and I have never seen so many coho.Anyways good fishing and tight lines and if you are fishing a spot and catching fish allday let the next guy take your spot the river is for evryone dont forget the fish are evry where from top to bottom dont forget to read the reg's conserve our waters and good luck but you should'nt need much luck right now.

Fished the last 3 weekends. Pinks almost require a lure with pink color in it. Spread out throughout the system now. The slow water seems best for coho. Gibbs Ultra Lure (thanks Vic) accounted for a lot of fish, especially in the good water that was a bit on the fast side since it's a a heaveir lure. Guide Vic Carrao is quite knowledgeable, and I'd recommend people contact him for a trip, or at least to chat. His email is: stsfishing@rapidnet.net By next week I bet most of the pinks will be in the upper river sections, if my past experience is any indicator.

Courtney lake is fishing well, up to 4lbs on marron leeches and gomphus dragons. No hatches that I could see. Lower Second lake in the Kane Valley is great for those who enjoy brookies on the fly. Fish to 20in on black marabou leeches. Water is freezing. Light chrony and boatman hatch.

I fished the Stave River both Saturday and today, it was pretty good. Chums have already moved in like Sandy said in the earlier report. However, they are not in great numbers yet. Fish were very scattered out so it was very hard to float fish. Green wool under the float was working pretty well, but I was doing better with croc spoons. Silver, green, pink crocs were all very effective. New fish were coming in as the day went by. There were also some very big cohos moving in too. Both days I saw cohos up to 6 - 8 pounds jumping in the fast water.

Fished out by Tamahi Sat afternoon. It was packed out there!! Must have been well over a hundred anglers in that stretch of river between the bridge and the second bend. Between my wife and I and we were into about 30 fish. Caught pink, coho, chum and Spring. Some of the Springs were huge!! Took home 3 hatchery coho. Overall it was a good afternoon. Good luck finding a spot there this weekend though, I've never seen it this busy there.

Fished the Stave Fri and Sat. The chum are in. Green seemed to be the color both days. The fly rod worked best Fri as the water was down. Sat hydro released water after 11:00am, switched to float as the fish had spread out. They were still catchable. Very few coho, the fisheries guy saw only 3 jacks on Sat. Remember to treat these fish with respect when you release them.

to the guy with the boat, if want want to experience catching a salmon, do yourself a favour and drive to harrison bay, stop by harrison bay store ,get some spoons, launch at kilby, go left under railbridge approx 1/2 mile, anchor in about 6 feet of water where the fraser and harrison meet, cast with little or no weight and slow retrieve. do all this, and you will catch fish... believe me!! (p.s. it hasnt peaked yet...)

This is the first year I have fished, We bought a small 15 ft runabout to fish the chuck but so far nothing but Rock Cod, With the advice of everyone here and personal friends we took a day off work and went to the Vedder (Wilson Bridge area) and except for the above mentioned area water was way to high, dirty and fast, we fished around the Wilson bridge from 6 am - 1 pm, none of the 3 of us had a bite even, saw only 2 pinks landed and thrown back, Guess timing is everything huh, Well here is hoping the next time out I catch or my wife catches our first ever salmon

Hi Dirk. The Veddar is producing quite a few coho and A LOT of white springs up to 40 pounds. Fish the lower end if you want hatchery coho. I was there yesterday and got a hatchery coho and lost two more. The Chehalis is low but very dirty. There must have been a mud slide...or somethings. There are a lot of pinks and chum. Some guys are hooking into coho at the "Long Run" and the "Hatchery Pool", but I haven't tried there myself. I have heard that the canyon is fishing VERY well. I hope this helps you out.

I fished Courtenay 3 times in the last week and the fishing was great. While the weather was still warm, I was getting fish to 2 1/2 lbs on chironomids in 5 feet of water. Then early this week when the weather changed we got fish to 3 lbs on shiner patterns. We used a size 6 hook with a gold mylar body, green marabou back and tail and red cheeks. Rowing along the dropoffs produced more fish than anchoring and casting. Hope this helps and good luck. We're heading to the Roche Lk area for the long weekend looking for brookies.

I went fishing to the pools above Keith Wilson Bridge and quite a few people landed fish. I got one doe coho which was very fresh and lost another three coho. One thing I have to remind all fishing folks to change your light line leader as frequent as you can or once it is worn. Otherwise you will end up like me losing some nice coho due to over-stressed leader line. I also want to share my experience to the readers in this column that longer leader, i.e. 3 to 4 ft , will result from catching more fish in slow flow water such as the river sections below Lickman Road to Vedder Canal.

Total closure for all salmon. No catch and release as you are not supposed to target any FOC salmon species (Pinks, Chum, Sockeye, Coho or Chinook). You can fish for Pinks in the Harrison.

Fished the Fraser above the Mission bridge Saturday. Fished all day slaying on the pinks with a FLY rod! Hooked about three in the tail, five in the hump and about a hundred in the mouth. Seen DFO officers flying up river to bust some natives. Me and my buddy were the only ones fishing this bar and didn't see anyone all day. Double headers all day long, what a blast!
